Frodo at Mount Doom This Saturday at 6pm ET, Hall of Fire climbs Mount Doom with Frodo and Sam and we finally reach the culmination of their long, draining quest.

‘I have come,’ he said. ‘But I do not choose now to do what I came to do. I will not do this deed. The Ring is mine!’ And suddenly, as he set it on his finger, he vanished from Sam’s sight.

The Return of the King: Book VI, Chapter III: Mount Doom

Sam and Frodo slowly traverse the shattered terrain of the Plateau of Gorgoroth. Luckily, Sauron has emptied his land and his attention is fixed on the Captains of the West.

The Hobbits cast aside all but the most necessary gear as Frodo begins to find the Ring intolerable. Sam forsakes food and water to sustain Frodo’s fast-waning strength and realises that, even should the pair succeed, there is no hope of return.

They are waylaid by a desperate Gollum — in a strange way, the former Ringbearer has become Sauron’s last line of defence. Sam strikes Gollum to the ground, but finally understands Frodo’s somewhat of point of view and spares Gollum from pity. Frodo, meanwhile, enters Sammath Naur. There, at the edge of success, he renounces his goal, claiming the Ring for himself.

Even as Sauron finally realises his folly and his danger, Gollum attacks Frodo from the shadows and bites off Frodo’s finger. His gloating triumph proves his undoing. Dancing at the edge, he topples headlong into the fires. The Ring is finally destroyed.

Join us at 6pm ET Saturday in The Hall of Fire as we head into the very cracks of doom.
