Andy Serkis has admitted that he is frustrated performance-capture is not taken as seriously as conventional acting. The actor is currently reprising his role as Gollum in The Hobbit, the prequel to the fantasy franchise Lord of the Rings. He told The Daily Telegraph: “I am a bit evangelical, I know, but performance-capture is still misunderstood. “Ten years down the line, people say, ‘Oh, so you did the voice of Gollum?’ Or people go, ‘You did the movements for Kong?’ It’s frustrating, because I play Gollum and I play Kong. It is acting.” More..

I completely respect you Andy! And i absolutely agree that perfomance-capture is exactly like acting except for the fact that on screen the actor’s face and body is rarely seen. Which is sad because performance-capture can require even more work at times and most people will never know that there’s an amazingly talented person underneath.

    You have mine.

You will never be able to get another actor playing a character like Gollum as well as Andy did. Rehearsal scenes on the Lord Of The Rings Extended Edition CD shows Andy at work, saying his lines, doing action movements for ‘Gollum’ sometimes under extreme weather conditions and without sitting on his backside.

Oh Andy. You know LotR fans appreciate your job the way it should be appreciated.

Word. It’s so sad to hear that people only know Andy as the voice of Gollum. Andy’s performance in the entire series was groundbreaking. He was Gollum. His acting was easily one of the highlights of TTT. I felt like he should have had some recognition at some prestigious award show for acting, speacial effects…something.

I think he IS Gollum and no one could have ever done the job he did.  When you got even that first glimpse of him in The Fellowship of the Ring there was a loud audience gasp in my theatre – all of us there on the first night’s showing.  Andy is magnificent as Gollum.

See, that’s funny to me, because my kids saw me reading about Planet Of The Apes and asked if that was “the same person that played Gollum” – I don’t think we have ever referred to him as “the guy who voiced Gollum” or “the mo-cap guy” around here. He’s just too good an actor in my mind 🙂

Andy Serkis is a fine actor!  I think he deserves a lot of recognition for putting his body through such trials just for the characters he has played.  Gollum, and King Kong just two name a couple.  I’m sure he’s tickled pink when he gets to play a human at all.  I think people don’t take him serious because the end result of his work is converted into a CG character but if you’ve ever see any behind the scenes footage of LOTR Andy’s in a cumbersome suit, hunched and in character, that’s a true pro.  Someone who lends himself to the character even knowing that he won’t be seen. That’s humility. I fear to imagine what the films would have been without him.  Your the best Andy!  Can’t wait to see you in the Hobbit!
