Wellywood sign to go ahead (Noooooo!!!)

May 20, 2011 at 8:55 pm by xoanon  -

A Wellywood sign to celebrate the capital’s film industry will be built along the hillside next to the Miramar Cutting. The Hollywood-style sign will be 3.5 metres high and 28m wide. It is understood to cost several hundred thousand dollars and is intended to be ready for the Rugby World Cup in September. Veteran Wellington film director Geoff Murphy could barely stop laughing when told yesterday that the idea would proceed. More..

It’s so embarrassing and tacky.  We love PJ, Weta and the film industry but this silly silly sign should be cast into the fires of Mount Doom immediately!

“Hey guys! We’re not Hollywood, a soulless entertainment machine that lost all of its real respectability years ago… we just wish we were them!”

What a fantastic waste of money ….

  4. Melilot says:

Dismally childish, more than a little tacky, and quite desperate-sounding. The sort of thing attention junkies do. Sad.

I’m not exactly a fan of the ‘sign’ either.  Middle Earth would of being nicer.

What an idiotic thing to waste a bunch of money on. I wasn’t under the impression Wellington desperately needed to boost film tourism, since PJ almost singlehandedly did that for them by 200% over the last decade. I agree with Geoff Murphy. They were doing fine without something so branded and tacky.

Nevermind NZ has many other things to celebrate besides it’s film industry.

  7. Galadhrimgal says:

How incredibly tacky! And so unnecessary! Why on earth would Wellington even want to be compared to Hollywood? Yuk!! Bad bad decision, Wellington!

  8. Anonymous says:

Why WellYWOOD, and why in Hollywood style? Shouldn’t they rather figure out something of that says Welligton instead of Beverly Hills?

  9. Lorraine Sands says:

How could the Wellington Airport be so lame? Surely we have more originality than this? This is just a lame-duck joke. Whether we live in Wellington or not it makes us all look ridiculous. Lorraine
