I’ve seen Bilbo — in three dimensions. I was visiting old friends in the Stone Street offices and heard Martin Freeman was just round the corner by the permanent greenscreen, done up as Bilbo, testing his costume in front of the 3D cameras. Indeed, there he was in the open air, mostly oblivious to the camera, though turning this way and that as required. Martin improvised a hobbity gait, padding back and forth, testing his big hairy Hobbit feet, pointy ears and little tum. More..

What a disappointment Tolkien fans would have experienced, had not the real Gandalf failed to appear in the Hobbit films. What fine film casting for the LOTR films! Could the character casting be that good for these films?! If you are not a member of the Tolkien Society, perhaps those of the culture who found the LOTR films to be extremely entertaining and convincingly real, should visit the Tolkien Society web site and consider becoming members of the Society. Thanks to the for bringing us this opportunity to keep up with the news from the land of the hobbits, and thanks be to the Valar for somehow arranging to keep Sir Ian McKellen where he is needed most — in Middle Earth, leading the quest to reclaim the dragon gold! March 25, 2941 – Gandalf (by “chance”) meets Thorin Oakenshield at the inn at Bree. Both have concerns regarding the Dragon. (“The Dragon Sauron might use with terrible effect,” pondered the wizard.) Thorin invites Gandalf to visit the halls of the dwarves, for he much sought the wizard’s advice: “For they say that you are wise and know more than any other of what goes on in the world: and I have much on my mind and would be glad of your counsel.”
” ‘I will come,’ said Gandalf: ‘for I guess that we share one trouble at least. The Dragon of Erebor is on my mind, and I do not think that he will be forgotten by the grandson of Thror.’ ”
Thus was brought into being the true beginning of the quest that is recorded in the story of The Hobbit. (LOTR vol. III, APPENDIX A – III, “Durin’s Folk”, p. 447f.)

McKellen is the one and only. Looking forward the the upcoming Hobit film.
