  1. This article makes me glad that Del Toro is no longer involved. Thorin as a heroic character?? Thorin was not heroic. He was greedy, stubborn, driven, unforgiving, and like most of the other dwarves considerably less brave than Bilbo. That was not only the nature of the vast majority of the dwarves, but also the curse of Thorin’s family line having possessed one of the 7, and any attempt to make him into the big Hero of the film will completely undermine the nature of his interaction with the men of Dale and Bilbo at the negotiations prior to the Battle of the Five Armies. I’m not sure about Smaug as being a skinny dragon but Tolkien did illustrate him that way in the early editions of the book.
