Hobbit Rally: Auckland

October 24, 2010 at 8:44 pm by xoanon  -

Cad Monkey writes: Just a quick review of the rally that’s just finished in Auckland. A slightly disappointing turnout of around 250 people, plenty of news media, radio & tv. Mark Harrison the Auckland actor who has organised the nationwide rallies spoke very well and at length about the impact that LOTR had on tourism and the economy in NZ and that if Warner Bros want to make the best movies they can (and make plenty of money too ) then NZ is the only place to shoot them: NZ is middle earth. Each point he made was greeted by loud cheers and applause. A statement by Peter Jackson was read out at the end thanking everyone for their support.

The New Zealand Herald is reporting that “Wellington, about 2000 to 3000 people gathered in Civic Square.”

Some more info for your international readers. The Auckland rally was just one rallies of several held around the country, with numbers attending reaching the thousands. There are a number of reasons why the Auckland rally was not quite so well attended as we hoped: it was a public holiday and many people were out of town, it was the first of our summer weather and so many were at the beach, many hobbit fans were attending the Armageddon Expo, and finally their were problems with the date and invites. The rally had originally been scheduled for mid-week, and then at short notice was brought forward. But as the “Keep the hobbit shoot in NZ” facebook page had exceeded 10,000 friends, there was a hiccup at we didn’t receive invites with the new date. I only found out myself by accident! I think it was spectacular that our gatherings were held up and down the country. How could WB resist us, as the whole country want to host them, inlcuing our Prime Minister!! Thx for your wonderful pics and write-up.
