The subject says it all folks. An interesting article from the LA Times comes our way this evening concerning James Cameron’s lofty quest to be mentioned alongside Tolkien, Star Wars and Star Trek.

“You’ve got to compete head on with these other epic works of fantasy and fiction, the Tolkiens and the ‘Star Wars’ and the ‘Star Treks,'” Cameron said. “People want a persistent alternate reality to invest themselves in and they want the detail that makes it rich and worth their time. They want to live somewhere else. Like Pandora.”

Why are we talking about James Cameron? I understand there’s a dearth of Tolkien-related stories at the moment, but why waste bandwidth on this?

  3. Hi MJB,

We believe this article is a starting point for a discussion on whether James Cameron’s work can be compared to Tolkien. I think you will find both the discussion on our forums and on the facebook thread to be quite productive. We’re sorry that you don’t find the story worth posting. Here’s a link to the discussion on facebook if you are interested:

If Cameron wants to compete with LOTR then he needs to make movies that wrestle with good and evil as principles, not just in manifestation of his far-leftist ideology.

    My first thought exactly.

James Cameron’s problem is that he’s too full of himself. While I visited Pandora once, I have no desire to return to it. I think the world’s he created will not have the lasting power of “the Tolkiens and the ‘Star Wars’ and the ‘Star Treks'”.

He can only HOPE to measure up to Tolkien.
