John Garth’s book, Tolkien and the Great War: The Threshold of Middle-earth, has now been published by HarperCollins. It recounts Tolkien’s experiences in the First World War, describes the building of his mythology; and tells the full story of his inspirational group of friends, the TCBS. Drawing extensively on his unpublished personal papers from this period, it is the first substantially new biography of Tolkien since 1977. AN Wilson, in the London Evening Standard, says: “This is very much the best book about Tolkien that has yet been written….” Wilson’s review can be read here and the book is for sale here.
