We were all pleasantly surprised to see Fellowship of the Ring at the top of the domestic box office last week. With the release of Black Hawk Down this coming weekend, the first real threat of ousting FOTR from the No. 1 spot is upon us. Who among you will take the ring? Thain of Westfarthing writes: This morning, NPR had a piece concerning independent film consisting mainly of interviews at the Sundance Film Festival. Among those interviewed was Mark Ordesky, who said that, despite its large budget, “Lord of the Rings” was an independent film. The piece focused on changes in the nature of independent film, mostly about the increasing commercialization of what used to be a chase for $50,000 movies made by directors who had maxed out their parents’ credit cards.
