Just last week on New Zealand’s South Island a Manapouri local may have stumbled upon a location that Peter Jackson used in filming The Fellowship of the Rings to film a famous scene in the Midgewater Marshes.
Several kilometres up the road to Takaro Lodge, Aaron Nicholson (who last year unsuccessfully attempted to have a Fiordland mountain renamed in honour of J.R.R. Tolkien) stumbled across the site while guiding the visiting Secretary of State for Wisconsin around the area.
Mr Nicholson said on inspection it looked as though no one had been there for a few years.
In the Fellowship of the Rings it is what I call Hobbit Second Breakfast at the Midgewater Marshes. Peter Jackson had to film in a snow storm when he did Lord of the Rings, but we had a perfect day.
As detailed in Ian Brodie’s Lord of the Rings Location Guidebook, the Takaro Road area was also used to film scenes for Fangorn Forest. The area was also used as a location in a Robert Mitchum 1989 TV Mini Series Brotherhood of the Rose.
