Barliman's Chat Word of Gandalf’s fall deeply troubles the Lord and Lady of the Golden Wood.

‘Alas!’ said Aragorn. ‘Gandalf the Grey fell into shadow. He remained in Moria and did not escape.’

At these words all the Elves in the hall cried aloud in grief and amazement. ‘These are evil tidings,’ said Celeborn, ‘the most evil that have been spoken here in long years full of grievous deeds.’

This weekend, in Hall of Fire we’ll resume our read-through of Fellowship of the Ring. Join us on Saturday December 8 at 5pm EST as we discuss:

FoTR Book II Chapter VII: The Mirror of Galadriel

Galadriel observes that the Quest teeters, but may yet succeed if the remaining eight stay faithful. Her gaze affects each member deeply; she seems to offer a choice. Frodo and Boromir appear most affected, but refuse to explain more.

The respite in Lothlorien offers shelter, healing and counsel. The Fellowship lingers yet time hardly seems to pass.

A restless Frodo, Sam in tow, encounters Galadriel. She leads them to her Mirror, which can reveal past, present and future. Sam looks and, to his distress, sees Frodo lying pale and lifeless, then the destruction of The Shire. Galadriel warns that, paradoxically, attempting to prevent future events might actually bring them about.

Frodo’s vision reveals a Gandalf-like figure, then Bilbo and many unexplained images. Suddenly the mirror goes dark, and Frodo perceives the Eye of Sauron. He breaks from the vision just in time. Impressed by Galadriel’s power, Frodo offers her the Ring. Sorely tempted, she resists and accepts that her fate will be to diminish and leave Middle-earth.

We don’t always talk Tolkien there, but if you have a burning question, you’ll usually find one or two of “the regulars” up for a chat!
