Richard Armitage as Thorin

October 22, 2010 at 2:19 pm by Celeborn  -

There’s been a lot of discussion since yesterday’s casting announcements about Richard Armitage playing the role of Thorin Oakenshield. After all, he doesn’t ‘seem‘ to fit the role after a quick glance. Well, thanks to Photoshop, and Ringer Ringer WouterG, we can at least get a better picture of what he might appear like in The Hobbit films. Click the image for a larger version. Enjoy!

Look great! I think he fits perfectly! Just as I imagined when I read the Hobbit! Thorin suppose to have that “knowing” sort of look, unlike many of the dwarfs we’ve seen. Also, don’t forget about the FOREHEAD! They will add Gimli-like forehead make up to his face too!

Here’s how he might look with the forehead makeup aswell –

Seems all the ladies are ga ga over the actor. No slam against him but do they realize he is playing a Dwarve? They are of course my fave characters (looking rather like one myself) but the actor does look a bit young. For someone to play Thorin I would picture someone like Brian Blessed.

  4. Clana says:

Yes, girls do go gaga over Richard Armitage, but he is also a very talented actor and I believe he will handle this role marvelously. I don’t mind him being hidden under a lot of make up/prosthetics, that’s a perfect opportunity for an actor to show what he can do without the ”burden” of his looks. Bottom line is, even though Armitage is a handsome man, he is also a very charismatic, charming and talented actor, which will shine through in this dwarfish role.

  5. Toetldi says:

As a woman, I feel like I need to point out that believe it or not, some of us aren’t all “ga ga” over how hot a guy is, as you say. Yes, the man is attractive. That has little to do with whether or not he can play the role that is considerably out of his age range. I also pictured someone much, much older, like Brian Cox.

Richard Armitage seems rather wasted here. He’s young, fit and has that good hearted hero’s look to him, so frankly, he’d be a much better fit as Bard, IMO.

Does this mean Richard may be coming to NZ? WOW! Are they still gonna film ova here in NZ tho? Does anyone know?

  7. Wizadora1 says:

Sorry….but this is the worst bit of casting ever!!! I cant for one minute image RA in this role. Hope he decides NOT to do it and concentrates on perhaps taking the lead in “The Rover”?

  8. KiplingKat says:

Au contraire. Thorin is a very interesting character, a bit morally ambiguous with the greatest emotional journey besides Bilbo’s. Armitage is not being wasted in this role in the slightest.

  9. Yek_66 says:

How could they do this to you!! and WHYYY!
you should play a hero, but still love him, he is sooooo good girls!!!

  11. Belinda Bu says:

Worst casting? That’s just silly. And besides, he IS gonna be doing it because no one in their right minds would give up a prestigious role in the Hobbit. RA will do perfectly fine. I don’t see why he can’t play a dwarf, prettiness is not everything.

  12. Michelle Riley says:

I think he looks really good. Its so clever the way they’ve made him look so small. He’ll do us proud with this character. Great work richard. Love michelle. Yorkshire xxx

  13. thorinsqueen says:

He’s perfect for this role, truly. I think many viewers, male or female, will ultimately be pleased with his performance.

  15. SUEY says:

Yes RA is gorgeous and his voice will shine in whatever role he plays .. personally cant wait to see him on the big screen .. well done Richard, but dont forget us women that love to see you regularly on the t.v.
    Good luck xx

  16. vischimp says:

He is too young. No amount of make up will hide that. Tolkien is spinning in his grave..

  17. Kishtamipo says:

If I’m not mistaken Peter said that Richard’s casting is in line with casting Vigo and Orlando Bloom, and if I recall correctly they were allowed to maintain their looks. He’s making a movie with the intention of attracting audiences besides avid readers “The Hobbit”‘s , so providing the audience with some “eye candy” will stand to reason. This leads me to conclude that his look in the film will be on the attractive side.

I don’t know of any 200 year old actors available.

  20. Annie Barnes says:

I strongly disagree RA has performed,to perfection every role that he has ever played. I wish him the very best of luck with this ventre.

  21. Hoschcom says:

Ha, ha, ha.  Well said.  For those who complained about an actor being too young to play a character in The Hobbit (or The Lord of the Ring), can you find any thousand-year old actors/actresses to play Gandalf, Elrond, Galadriel, …?

  22. Nah, I think enough Armitage will shine through that women will start seeing short, hairy men in a new light.

  23. Kraeten says:

Ugh, too bad he didn’t actually look like this. WTF was Pete Jackson thinking?

  24. Lisa says:

You should have been hired to do the costuming for Thorin.  This would have been so much better than the Klingon Wannabe look.
