Mendil writes: I heard in the news recently that Vivendi may break up Houghton Mifflin and sell it in small pieces, if it cannot find a buyer willing to pay as much as they’d like to get. It seems their trying to finance another buyout. They only just recently got an offer they found attractive, but they were about to give up. [More]

Greetings — Anwyn here.
Green Books brings you a spooky bag of treats (or tricks!) for the end of October!
Quickbeam goes Out on a Limb and practically down on his knees begging Peter Jackson not to make him wait any longer for The Two Towers!
Anwyns Counterpoint reviews a new book, Tolkiens Sanctifying Myth, and interviews its author, Dr. Brad Birzer. The book is a terrific exploration of how Tolkiens Catholicism affected the writing of The Lord of the Rings, and Dr. Birzer has some pithy comments on Tolkiens world view.
Turgon shows us two new gems on his Bookshelf, including Bilbos Last Song and the 2003 Ted Nasmith Tolkien Calendar.
Turgon also brings us a Special Guest item featuring a Q&A with noted Tolkien scholar Verlyn Flieger, author of Splintered Light: Logos and Language in Tolkiens World.
Moon Letters offers many new and splendid items of fan poetry and creative writing.
Questions & Answers will return with all-new items in November. Meanwhile, enjoy our extensive archives and check into our Most Frequently Asked Questions!
As always, it is an honor for the Green Books staff to present our work to you. Enjoy, and Happy Halloween!
Looking at the pictures that appeared recently showing the menus on the extended DVD, Ringer Spy Andrew did some work on the runes and calligraphy that appear there…[More]
Ringer Spy Andrew did some work on translating the writing you see on the Special Edition DVD menu:
“Did you notice the runes and tengwar on the DVD menu screenshots in the article on ign.com that has just been posted? Well, I decided to start working out what they said. Ignoring a few errors and inconsistencies, this is what I’ve got so far:
“The third image, with the tilted Play Movie menu, has runes above which say: There and back again, a hobbit’s tale. The tengwar writing below says Nine companions to match the nine ringwraiths. So be it – Elrond regards them – You shall be the fellowship of the ring!
“The sixteenth image, with the horizontal Play Movie menu, the runes at the top are still the same, but the writing at the bottom is now different, and reads Eleventy-one years is far too short a time to live among such excellent and admirable hobbits. I don’t know half (yes, it stops there).
“In the fourteenth picture is the most interesting bit of all: A loose sheet covered in tengwar is sitting on the left-hand page of the book, and it turns out that this is Galadriel’s Namarie poem, written in Quenya, and modelled closely on Tolkien’s own calligraphy of it in The Road Goes Ever On !”
If you missed Elijah Wood’s appearance on the Comedy Channel, Lucy at Always&ForeverEW has this great transcript.
