Greetings, Quickbeam here–

On tonight’s (Wednesday) broadcast of HOLLYWOOD SQUARES, the following Tolkien-inspired dialogue occurred during a $2,000 dollar game near the end of the show:

Tom Bergeron (host): In J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings,” what is the name of the little mushroom-loving creatures in the story?

Mark McGrath (from Sugar Ray): Uh, that would be Grateful Dead fans…

[audience laughter]

[close-up of Whoopi Goldberg laughing at Bruce Vilanch]

Tom: Ha-ha.

Mark: No, seriously, the answer is “Lilliputians.”

Contestant Mr. X: I disagree.

Tom: HOBBITS! It was Hobbits, X gets the square!

[audience applause]

I thought this whole exchange was amusing, and obviously Mark McGrath was reading a “bluff answer” the producers gave him. Actually, it sounded like one of Bruce Vilanch’s jokes (he writes for the show). Anyway, just thought I’d share with you….

Much too hasty,

Quickbeam

Badali who is one of our few advertisers, had some problems with his website. Some of you reported a problem with it. I am just letting you know that his site is back up, and should remain up. If you want your very own One Ring check out his site here.

If you sell a product that relates to Tolkien and would like to advertise with us, you can find information about advertising here. TheOneRing.net is currently limiting advertising on the site to companies/products we feel would interest people who come to this site for the same reason they come here. I.e. companies products and services which are based in Tolkien or more generally in fantasy.

Ringer Spy Duncan sends this in:

Sorry I missed that radio interviw with Lee. He was on telly in the UK last night though. He’s released a charity single (Its now or never!)

He only mentioned LOTR indirectly (he was asked about his co-villain in the Man with the Golden Gun’ and he described him as ‘hobbit-sized’.

Clearly has Tolkein on the mind.

It was on ‘The 11o’clock Show’ (an alleged ‘comedy’ programme)

Where’s Flip Spiceland when you need him? It seems that the weather in Middle-earth…er, New Zealand has turned a bit…nasty:

Indeed the wether in Queenstown is baaad. (Sorry, couldn’t resist after that sheep shot. It was a cheap shot, I know… πŸ™‚

Fresh from bad weather in Harcourt Park (necessitating rebuilding the park), the team in now based in beautiful tourist-mecca Queenstown, where Lake Wakatipu has risen to record levels (since 1878), forcing the evacuation of people from lakeside areas of the town and sandbagging of shops by volunteers in downtown Queenstown.

Wanaka has been cut off from Queenstown by rising floodwaters.

This just in: Telephone services may be cut in Alexandra due to flooding possibly forcing the shutting down of the telephone exchange. Cellphone services will also be affected if the exchange is shut down. (Casting calls were held in Alexandra for horses, etc.)

Geez, and I thought it was only in Canada where the weather made the news.

Thanks to Ian for the tip!

Wanna see Helms Deep? Amazing Ringer Spy Sam sends in his reports of his adventure at the quarry, which is highly tipped to be Helms Deep. Check it out!

!!!Warning Medium Spoilers!!!

Check it all out in The Spy Reports

Super Ringer Spy Sam has scores some amazing pictures from the quarry set!

Think of Lord of the Rings. Think of The Two Towers. Think somewhere in the middle. Think Helms Deep. What images does it conjure into your mind? To me, it conjures images of resiliance, honor, bravery, strength and plain old good.

And that is what was radiating from The Dry Creek Quarry, Upper Hutt, one night. Having my evenings activities unexpectedly postponed for the night, my friend and I decided to take a chance. We got out the map and searched for the Quarry. We drove up there and parked opposite, beside another car. Thinking it probably belonged to a security guard, we had to shiver as we crossed the road towards the Quarry and the lone light that emitted from a building at the front. Or maybe it was the cold Wellington night…

…whilst marvelling at the bulking shadows in the distance (Helm2.jpg – taken from Site 1).

We moved on up to Site 2 (Helm3.jpg) which seems to be a couple of towers on a wooden platform (one tower is out of sight, to the right of the photo. They’re about 8 feet high.

Site Three (Helm4.jpg) is next door, and up a gravel bank. It consists of two walls, with gaps in between. This is from the rear and (Helm9.jpg) is from the front. Talk about huge! As of yet it’s mostly scaffolding, except the front.

Site Four is further up the hill – (Helm7.jpg). So far, from the bottom,it consists of a curved wall and a doorway, with steps carved from the gravel leading up through it. It leads up to (Helm8.jpg).

There were two other windows to the right. It can be seen in (Helm6.jpg), (Helm5.jpg) shows the wall in front of the stairs leadingup, as well as a wall to the doorway’s left.

It sure was exciting to know that *this* was where John-Rhys Davies would stand, *this* is where the orcs would charge..

Also attached are some photos from a while back of Bree, in Seatoun, from various angles.
