Press Release
“Lord of the Rings Not Welcome in Kahurangi National Park, or Kepler Mire”
The Forest and Bird Protection Society is concerned that Frodo and his hairy hobbit friends with their attendant large film crews may severely damage sensitive landscapes in the Kahurangi National Park and Kepler Mire, an ancient string bog in Fiordland.
Forest and Bird’s Southern Conservation Officer, Sue Maturin, said the Society opposed the Lord of the Rings being filmed in the internationally significant Kepler Mire and the glaciated karst country at Mt Owen in Kahurangi National Park.

Ain’t It Cool News has posted a review of the latest Christopher Lee film ‘Sleepy Hollow’. Lee has a small cameo, this is what the review says about Lee:
Chistopher Lee is wasted in this film
This was the first statement to pop into mine that had been in a review that appeared here on AICN that was revealed to be false to me. You see…. Christopher Lee has… a cameo. A brief… oh so brief… scene. He is the man that sends young Ichabod Crane to the town of Sleepy Hollow. There… in that brief minute or two minute long scene you see… for that moment or two… the power of Christopher Lee. When that finger of his points at poor Johnny Depp… you get the sense that… Well… that you would gulp as well.
Check out the rest of the review here.

I was reading my STAR WARS insider magazine, and there was an interview with Jake Lloyd (Anakin Skywalker) in it. When asked what he’s reading/interested in these days, he gave a simple five word response:
“Tolkien. Lord of the Rings.”
Somehow I find it comforting that our future Darth Vader is indulging in the finer areas of life…

I know this is supposed to be a ‘funny’ thing, but the word that comes to me is….rude.
Article from The Evening Post 13/11/1999 (Saturday)
In ‘The Last Word’ (a last page ‘humour’ column):
“Fans of the Lord Of The Rings are so obsessed that on the Internet they’ve resorted to claiming to have discovered a “false cover” to part of the movie script.
The cover shows the logo of the Scouting movement and the title Jamboree Part One of Three, 3rd Draft. The cover explains it’s “an affectionate coming-of-age drama set in the New Zealand Boy Scout Movement during the ‘years of turmoik’ 1958-63. Screeplay by Fredricka Wharburton, Percy J Judkins, Faye Crutchley and Kennedy Landenburger.”
The fan explains that false covers to scripts are common in Hollywood so that copies don’t go missing. The idea is to make it look as boring as possible. The fan’s guess is that Percy J Judkins is Peter Jackson and Fredricka Wharburton is his wife and screenwriting partner Francis Walsh. Good grief.”

Fantasy role Attracts star
Sunday Star Times
November 14th 1999
By Rachel Grunwell
Hollywood actress Cate Blanchett has confirmed she will be in New Zealand in June to star in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings.
In an exclusive interview with the Sunday Star Times, Blanchett said she would be in the country for six weeks to play the elf Galadriel, the wise queen of Lorien.
“I believe they will be doing something interesting with my ears,” said Blanchett, who read the JRR Tolkien books when she was at school.
Blanchett said Jackson approached her to play the role in the $360 million trilogy and she accepted it almost immediately. She was excited about working with Jackson and coming here for the first time.
She had heard about the beatiful landscape, but admitted she knew little else about the country.
The blonde siren, who was nominated for an Oscar and who won the Golden Globe and Bafta best actress awards for her title role in Elizabeth last year, said she almost almost came here last year for a holiday and to see friends.
Lead roles in Lord of the Rings include Sir Ian McKellan as the wizard Gandalf and Elijah Wood as the young hobbit, Frodo. Liv Tyler plays Arwen, a young elf princess who is prepared to give up her immortality for love of Aragorn, a human.
None of the stars have yet spoken about their roles because they have been hushed by contracts. Rings publicist Claire Raskind said filming in Wellington had finished for the year and the crew hasd shifted to Queenstown.
Meanwhile, musician Neil Finn is to write music for a new Hollywood movie starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor. This is according to Baz Luhrmann who has directed a list of big name films, including Strictly Ballroom, and the most recent movie adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Speaking before the opening of Fox Studios in Sydney last week, Luhrmann said he had been working with Finn on music for his latest film, Moulin Rouge.
“Neil and I were trying to work out some music on this film together. I think he’s one of the most extraordinary writers of folk music and lyrics” said Luhrmann. “On Moulin Rouge we were looking to work on something and if not that, we will probably do something in the future. He is someone I’ve been trying to find a way to work with. I love him”
Filming started on Tuesday. Finn’s assistant Amanda McGregor said Finn could not comment because he was too busy recording but had said he “would love to do a musical with Baz Luhrmann”.
