From Variety:
Warner Bros. to Release First New ‘Lord of the Rings’ Movie ‘The Hunt for Gollum’ in 2026, Peter Jackson to Produce and Andy Serkis to Direct
By Jennifer Maas

Quote
Warner Bros. will release the first of its new batch of “The Lord of the Rings” films in 2026, which will focus on Andy Serkis’s Gollum.

Original “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy filmmaker Peter Jackson and his partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens are producing the movie and “will be involved every step of the way,” Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav said during an earnings call Thursday.

The project is currently in the early stages of script development from writers Walsh and Boyens, along with Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou, and will “explore storylines yet to be told,” Zaslav said.

In a press release from Warner Bros. later Thursday morning, the studio revealed that the working title for the film is “Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,” and it will be directed by and star Serkis in his iconic titular role. The film will be executive produced by Ken Kamins, with Serkis and The Imaginarium’s Jonathan Cavendish.

Thanks for sharing the news here. I understand "The Hunt for Gollum" is a working title and subject to change, but clearly Gollum returns, and hunting for him seems like it has to involve Gandalf and Aragorn, or a wizard and a man, and Gollum will wind up in jail with Elves, but they could switch that from Mirkwood to Rivendell or Lorien. I'm just thinking back to LOTR, and "of course Glorfindel will have to take Frodo to the Ford of Bruinen"--be careful with one's "of course!" 's and assumptions on what's canon.

While I can't say I've been pining away for decades to learn more about this particular story, it offers a lot of scope: Smeagol's early life and hobbit community, and maybe prior to that, the film could develop Isildur's doomed march home and last battle more than the snippet we've seen, all to show how the Ring wound up near Gollum.

Then for "the hunt" itself, that covers a lot of territory down the Anduin to Mordor, and back again to take Gollum to jail (I assume with Elves somewhere), and who knows how much of Gollum's time in Mordor we'll see? So, it could be quite an adventure. *Fingers crossed.*

Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.
