Bernard Hill, R.I.P. [In reply to] Can't Post

From The Independent:

Bernard Hill death: Lord of the Rings and Titanic actor dies, aged 79
Lois Chilton

Quote
Bernard Hill, the actor best known for roles in Titanic and the Lord of the Rings trilogy, has died at the age of 79.

Hill played Theoden, King of Rohan, in the Oscar-winning fantasy trilogy, and the part of Captain Edward Smith in James Cameron’s disaster-hit Titanic.

The news was confirmed to the BBC by the actor’s agent Lou Coulson, who said that he died in the early hours of Sunday morning (5 May).

A statement from Hill’s family is expected shortly.

The actor was also known for his iconic role as Yosser Hughes in Alan Bleasdale’s seminal British drama Boys from the Blackstuff.

Damn, that's sad. [In reply to] Can't Post

I didn't realise that he's nearly 80. But then, TTT came out 21 years ago, so I guess that tracks.

Stuff has a good obit for him: https://www.stuff.co.nz/...rd-rings-has-died-79

So very sad. [In reply to] Can't Post

Probably because my dad and mom lived to be 93 and nearly 100, respectively, 79 did not sound terribly old to me - until today. (Yikes!). I am so glad that Hill was cast as Theoden because he was absolutely perfect! It just so happened that last night I watched Fellowship; tonight I will watchThe Two Towers so I can thoroughly enjoy Bernard Hill's Théoden for the umpteenth time.

So very sad. [In reply to] Can't Post

By sheer coincidence, the Mr and I watched "The Two Towers" on Saturday night, and I was reminded of how wonderfully Hill inhabited the role.

May he rest in peace.

What does an actor hope for but to be believed? [In reply to] Can't Post

I believe every moment that Bernard Hill is on screen in LOTR in his role as man and king.

Quote
"I know your face. Eowyn."
“No parent should have to bury their child.”
"Who am I Gamling?"
“If this is to be our end, then I would have them make such an end as to be worthy of remembrance."
"I would have you smile again, not grieve for those whose time has come."

Thank you, Théoden King. Rest in peace.

This is truly a sad day. [In reply to] Can't Post

First Andrew Lesnie and Christopher Lee nine years ago, then Christopher Tolkien, Andrew Jack and Ian Holm in more recent years, and now Bernard Hill also passes into the west. This truly is a sad day for all the fandom around the world. He imbued his unforgettable performance as King Theoden with such depth and gravitas. Many of his moments on screen are all time favorites of mine in the trilogy, not only grandiose moments such as the ride of the Rohirrim but also intimate, tender moments with Eowyn. his performance will live forever in my heart. My sincere and heartfelt condolences to his loved ones. May he rest in peace.Heart

Sending my thoughts to his family and friends and LOTR companions. It's been touching to see how many folks have commented on his passing in random little corners of the internet.

I can only hope... [In reply to] Can't Post

I can only hope that when "War of the Rohirrim" premieres later this year, that they include a tribute to him in the end credits. Much like it was done for Leonard Nimoy and Anton Yelchin in "Star Trek Beyond". It would be quite fitting.Heart

Such a lovely man. [In reply to] Can't Post

His presence was always comforting and inspirational, especially in The Lord of the Rings. He is my image of Theoden as I read the books for years, and it astounded me when he appeared and brought Theoden to life.

When he gathers Eowyn's hands into his and softly speaks to her with so much love, reassurance and respect, "No more despair" This moment always has me teary. So wonderful.

I'm so sad that he's gone; but I'm so grateful for what he has given us with his Theoden. Peace, kind sir.

I agree. [In reply to] Can't Post

I was hoping they would do the same, they also did a tribute to Chadwick Boseman when Black Panther: Wakanda Forever came out as well.

"Keen, heart-piercing was her song as the song of the lark that rises from the gates of night and pours its voice among the dying stars, seeing the sun behind the walls of the world; and the song of Lúthien released the bonds of winter, and the frozen waters spoke, and flowers sprang from the cold earth where her feet had passed."
