I had an upsetting experience when UK actor Richard Beckinsale died in '79 too - [In reply to] Can't Post

not a dream, but I was overseas and became upset and agitated and couldn't understand why, no way of contacting home to see if family were okay. The news of his death filtered through in a couple of days and hit me hard as I'd been really fond of him, and he was so young - only 31. Heart attack due to an undiscovered congenital defect.

I learned to drive on a stick shift. [In reply to] Can't Post

My mom was insistent on her kids learning that way first.

So my older brother bought a starting-to-rust small sedan, I think it was a Ford, and he used a coathanger to hold the exhaust pipe in place. Mom bought a small Datsun wagon, remember that make? It was four cylinder and you had to pedal hard to make it up the hills. We called it Nagasaki Schwartz - it was our second "bomb", and for some reason I thought "schwartz" was German for "white". Ah well.

Mom "sold" it to me when I got married, and I got a couple more years out of it until the gas tank began rusting. Tongue

Those old VW's [In reply to] Can't Post

were amazing in snow. I've heard about them almost seeming to glide on top of snowfall that other cars would get stuck in.

An '89 Porsche, what a wild and crazy lady you are! Laugh I'm assuming it's a stick shift, how many gears does it have?

Occupational hazard, really… [In reply to] Can't Post

My Dad and my husband both had auto repair shops, so our households have gone through a wide variety of vehicles over the years. Yes the Porsche is a stick, 5-speedSmile.

I had a Datsun! [In reply to] Can't Post

A red 510 wagon. Mom & Dad bought it for me in college. It was a total lemon. Broke down every three weeks or so - including the brakes failing while a prospective buyer test drove it! I fixed the brakes and managed to unload it. Its maximum speed was about 40 mph.

Oh, its steering was fine! [In reply to] Can't Post

But it just had no power. The worst time was when we were on the Massachusetts Turnpike starting the climb into the Berkshire Hills, and it suddenly lost power, as if it had downshifted to second on its own. Had to pull over and restart it, but it still barely slogged up that six-mile slope.

That was it! [In reply to] Can't Post

A 510 wagon! Our brakes only failed once - when we'd let a friend borrow it, and he was on the highway. He was able to pull over to the shoulder without crashing. Crazy
