*blunders in from the garden* It's Friday so it must be Fiesta - eventually! Can't Post

So sorry about that, folks; I was channelling my inner Samwise and was too wrapped up in the garden. Anyway, here we are!

Welcome one and all to The Green Hobbit! There's a log fire crackling soporifically in the corner for those feeling the nip of autumn, and the beer garden's waiting for those sensing the steady march of spring towards summer. Drinks cold and hot await behind the bar and snacks for all seasons are laid out on the table, so help yourselves, relax and chat about your week!
Wobbly Bob suggested a karaoke night... well, he would, wouldn't he?! His party piece is that old foot-stomper, 'Shake, rattle and troll'. What would be your favourite song to sing?
I went on a short camping trip last week; I forgot to mention last Fiesta that one of the two pubs a short walk away from the campsite was called The Green Dragon! Sadly there was no sign of Middle Earthiness about it, so I didn't visit it. Might try it out next time I visit that area.

*puts coin in jukebox, selects Great Balrogs of Fire* [In reply to] Can't Post

Good morning, all! What's everyone up to this weekend?

I've got a haircut in a couple of hours - a second try to find a stylist who understands what I want - then tonight it's card's night at the house of my brother's friend. Should be fun!

I should be doing more in the garden to get it winter-ready (weed removal, digging-in compost) but I really can't be bothered. To be fair, the garden's doing pretty well: the kumara and capsicums have gone gangbusters this season and the silver beet is growing well for winter meals. I will need to remove the passionfruit vine as it's had its three seasons and will have to be replaced in spring.

I think a hot chocolate with a shot of Bailey's would start the day off well. Thanks for opening the doors, GH! Smile

Great karaoke song choice there! [In reply to] Can't Post

D'you know I've never tried hot chocolate with Bailey's? Must give it a whirl sometime! I need a haircut in a week or two, but mine is a very straightforward sort of bob, purely routine. Glad you've had a good harvest. As for cards, my husband tried to teach me to play bridge. If he'd persevered we might have been divorced sooner! I do not have a strategic 'card brain', same with chess. Scrabble is a different matter though! Enjoy your weekend. Cheers!

I think one has to learn to play bridge fairly early in life [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm pretty good at many card games, including ones where you have to take tricks and/or bid, but bridge defeats me. I think I came to it too late . . . also, whenever people try to reach me they end up arguing with each other about how to play which is . . . not helpful.

We had a taste of warmish weather last week but we've cooled off again, and the forecast is mostly cloudy/rainy for the rest of the month. But those few days of warmth encouraged my plants to grow! Harvested the first crop of lettuce! So even if it's still sweater weather, I'll have a hard lemonade please barkeep!

No plans for the rainy weekend. I have a talk (online) coming up Tuesday night and I keep on finding new stuff to add, so I will probably do a bit more fussing with that. We're trying to get a new organization for mythologists off the ground, and the talk series is part of that.

I had to look up hard lemonade - I'm so English! [In reply to] Can't Post

Blush sounds good though, nice and tangy. Enjoy! I'm rubbish at all those card games. I wasn't brought up to play them, I just remember word games - a bit like Scrabble but with cards - and things like that. Oh, and Monopoly, which I didn't like because I never won! Cluedo suited me better for some reason. Enjoy your lettuce - nothing like the flavour of food fresh from the garden. My tomatoes are growing well but are still young, no flowers yet. Basil and flat-leaved parsley are thriving. Good luck with building the mythologists organisation; exciting times!

Happy Friday! [In reply to] Can't Post

Karaoke night, eh? Hmm, how about Take Me Home, Country Roads by John Denver?

I'll be having a quiet weekend as my girlfriend comes home from abroad Sunday and I have to prepare for a friend coming to stay with us for a couple of days early next week.

It's been gloomy and colder here, so I'm hoping we get some sun soon. In the meantime I'll probably watch some movies this weekend.

Hope everyone has a nice weekend!

Maybe we should rewrite it for The Shire - and finish it off by saying, 'Well, I'm back'! Hmm, I haven't written a parody in years... Enjoy your quiet weekend; hope the weather picks up for you all!

Garden? [In reply to] Can't Post

Garden! That wonderful place where you can play in the dirt and no one minds! Greetings, GH, what's coming up now? We've been having days of nice rains here, and I need to get out and weed this weekend, those are growing faster than the flowers! Crazy

Could I have an iced tea, please? I need to keep hydrated - just got a tetanus shot and an RSV shot, so I may feel like I've got a bit of a cold this weekend.

Yes, you should take a browse around that Green Dragon the next time you're there, just for comparisons, of course!

Hmph, I'd like to see Wobbly Bob try "The Long and Winding Road (through Moria)" Laugh

Another sunny day here [In reply to] Can't Post

The weather packed up somewhat during the week, with rain and plunging temperatures. We had the fire going for the first time this year, and dusted off the hot water bottles. Bright and sunny again today, though, so very nice for gardening, and the rain has left the soil in a welcoming state.

Had an irritating experience re our apartment this week. We've had someone showing interest, and have been back and forth with the Body Corporate (they sort of manage the apartment block. The apartments are owned individually, but the surrounding land and areas like the stairwell are held in common). In the time we've owned the place, standards have been raised for rental property - something which I fully support. It hasn't affected us up till now, as we've never rented out the apartment. But for the potential buyer, we had to get approval in principle for additions like venting and a heat pump. That was all fine, but now the manager has suddenly asked us if we have approval for an awning that's in place over the door to the courtyard (in real estate-ese, by the way, all courtyards are "sun-drenched courtyards"). The answer is no, as the awning was already there when we bought the place 22 years ago, and we had no reason to think it might not have been approved. Well, suddenly we're told we have to get approval for it, as it looks as if the previous owner neglected to. 22 years they've had to tell us this (and I don't know how many years before that, under the previous owner), and now when we're trying to sell it they come up with this! Now we have to apply for approval, and if that's not granted get the awning removed (which would be a shame, as it does a great job). In the meantime, the potential buyer has stopped returning calls, which may or may not be connected.

A very first world problem, I know. But annoying.

Apart from that, a quiet week. I almost have enough strawberry guavas for jelly, though the wood pigeons are now scoring most of them. I made red lentil soup, which turned out very well. Catching up with friends tomorrow, including one who's been in Melbourne the last few months, so very much looking forward to seeing her again. Another sunny day predicted tomorrow, which will make in nice to eat outside (under a different awning!)

Wishing everyone a pleasant weekend.

Iced tea coming your way - [In reply to] Can't Post

hope the after-effects of your jabs are minimal. The garden's looking really good just now; the laburnum tree frames it, as does the 'Penelope' climbing rose against the
fence, soft apricot in the bud then fading to ivory. It opens out well too, so there's something for th pollinators. The aquilegia have spread themselves around at random, but I like random in a garden - very cottagey. I'm rather less enthusiastic about the herb Bennet, willowherb, hairy bittercress, herb Robert, dandelion, cleavers etc etc!
Another good song there; maybe we need a Hobbit pub song parody thread sometime!

Regular (but not excessive!) rain [In reply to] Can't Post

is a blessing to the gardener! Mother Nature is helping me with my duties at present, with good rain every couple of days, as I'm watering my friend's garden while she's away, which includes masses of things in pots ready for a plant stall in June.
How annoying about your apartment awning! I hope the situation can be resolved; it sounds like it's an essential piece of kit. 22 years is taking retrospective approval to extremes! I do lie that 'Body Corporate' title - sounds very grand. I think here they just call them managing agents, which levy a service charge for communal areas, grounds, repairsetc. There are some retirement flats near me that, on theface of it, seem very reasonably priced - but the service charge more than makes up for that!
I do like a good lentil soup; I use carrots and sweet potato in mine too, which make it cheerily orange. Enjoy!

The Green Dragon? [In reply to] Can't Post

Oh yeah... you'll have to let us know if it redeems itself with the inner workings :D

My daughter and I are starting to pack up her gear for her to head home on Monday, if all goes according to plan!!! Sort of like when Frodo and Sam knew it was time to leave Rivendell and get on with the next step, we felt it was time.. She's recovering very well now and is able to do for herself 90% of the time, and Pickle & I need our recliner back ;) It's been 6 weeks. She starts physical therapy this week and I'll be going to her home to help out daily... or as often as needed... but it's time!!! I've GOT to mow the grass!

So I'd like to grab a chocolate milkshake to celebrate since I'll be starting my diet on Tuesday. *ponders* Maybe Wednesday ;)

Thanks for taking such great care of us GH! Have a wonderful weekend!

Chocolate milkshake coming right up! [In reply to] Can't Post

sounds like you need the energy! So glad things are progressing with your daughter and she'll be back in her own space again very soon. That will be good for you both. Hope the physio helps her build up strength. As for the diet? Maybe Thursday! Don't pile on the diet pressure straight away. Summer's coming, there'll be plenty of time to work off any surplus. Cheers!

Safe travels for your girlfriend - and the old friend, have fun showing them around, I hope the weather brightens up for that! Smile

Just feeling snuffly now. [In reply to] Can't Post

I think some chicken soup is in order for the day!

Climbing roses are delightful to look at - and watch the bees flitting among them! I'd bought some phlox at the garden center a couple weeks ago, and was delighted to see a bee flitting among the flowers while I was waiting at the checkout (it did eventually leave and head back into the store).

What colours are your aquilegia? The "weeds" look pretty when blooming, but they are such a nuisance if not kept in check. Although I did try to grow a relative of the herb Robert, some cranesbill, and it died at the end of last summer. I'm debating sowing mini-clover in my back yard, the turkeys have made such a mess of the grass.

A Hobbit pub song parody thread? What a grand idea!

Right, so where was that Body Corporate (hm, doesn't that mean "body as a body"?) when you were purchasing the apartment back then, it's not fair that that's your problem now! I hope it resolves quickly and in your favour.

A milestone weekend! [In reply to] Can't Post

So happy that her recovery has gone so well! The therapy will still take time, both in travel (for you) and in the doing, but the intensity of the recuperation is continually lessening!

So you both deserve chocolate milkshakes. And don't worry about the calories, you'll be burning those off with the lawn mowing! Laugh

My aquilegias are a very random selection [In reply to] Can't Post

that keep self-seeding. They come in colours from dark purple, burgundy, lilac, pink and white; some singles, some doubles, some bicolours. You never quite know what's going to pop up! The bees like them but they are crafty sometimes and bite through the top of the curly 'horn' to get at the nectar the easy way. Cranesbill types or hardy geraniums do alright in my soil; they seem to like a certain amount of shade but need some sun too.
Enjoy your chicken soup - virtual or otherwise!

I was just thinking yesterday that I need to pick up some columbines [In reply to] Can't Post

(aquilegias). Yes, they self-sow all over, but they're easily dug up if you don't want them somewhere, and they're so pretty! Especially if you have a range of colors. And they can survive the occasional hard freeze.

I'm with you on the cottage garden look. I follow a page on Instagram called small_magical_gardens which has lots of shots of gorgeously messy gardens.

It was a really good night. [In reply to] Can't Post

We had two games of a 'house rules' version of Up and Down the River and I, as a poor guest, won both of them. Cool I was surprised by the first win as early on in the game, I was very last - as in, there was daylight between my score and the next player. But good cards and bold calls that paid off ended up working out.

And the haircut is a good start. I really like this stylist - she properly listened to what I was saying and talked with me throughout the cut to figure out the best way forward. This is the first step in an effort to fix the damage caused by the previous stylist, and I'm reasonably confident that we'll get there.
