Deadline Interview w/ PJ, Philippa Boyens & Andy Serkis Can't Post

This felt like the best spot to drop this post until (or if) we eventually have a dedicated The Hunt for Gollum forum.

Deadline Hollywood released an interview w/ PJ, Philippa & Andy today, which talks mostly about The Hunt for Gollum and some of the genesis of this whole endeavor.

Interview here: https://deadline.com/...-trilogy-1235917510/

Some random tibits to pull out:

- A quick highlight is that Andy more or less confirms they don't have a script and are still in very early conversations about what this story even is, as well as which characters (other than Gollum) will appear. So to me the 2026 release date still feels bold, but time will tell.

- Philippa mentions having not really watched RoP due to not wanting to be influenced by it but she admires them wanting to tell that particular story, of the making of the Rings. She also says it's their job now to justify that a Hunt for Gollum movie is worth making, so they seem intent on making something that feels necessary, not just "because we can".

- Philippa also has this line about War of the Rohirrim and (indirectly) about the idea of adapting The Hunt for Gollum, as well which books they have the rights to: “We have the right to the Lord of the Rings and the appendices, and that’s it,'” Boyens said. “I would love to see that expand if there was the opportunity to do so, but there is so much that is in those three books. I know that especially hardcore fans of Professor Tolkien, they always get nervous that there’s only so much story that is in there. But look at War of the Rohirrim. It’s a page and a half at first glance in the books. But there are lots of threads in there throughout the book."

- She also mentions Tolkien's letter to Milton Waldman, about Tolkien allowing for "other minds and hands" to be involved in this world's storytelling.

It seems as if they're aware of some of the initial reactions from some of the fanbase, so if you're reading this, hello Philippa! Smile

Hmmm [In reply to] Can't Post

Nice find.

I hope they go for a lower budget, smaller film. A more intimate and low key movie that tells a good story rather than shows off flashy effects would be a refreshing change in the cinema. I think if they kept their ambitions small, they could make a Christmas 2026 deadline. But the more grad they try to make it, the less likely we'll see it that soon, IMHO.

Yes I agree [In reply to] Can't Post

If this is a smaller film on the scale of something like The Hunt for the Wilderpeople (for lack of a better comparison), then I think the release date is doable. Obviously this will have more visual effects (since Wilderpeople has relatively few and isn't a fantasy movie), so I think the meat is really in the details of what version of this story they want to tell.

If Gollum is leading Aragorn (and whoever else) into semi-large battles with Orcs and Trolls and who-knows-what-else, it might be tougher to release by then.

I think we can pretty much list a few characters (in addition to GOLLUM) essential to this story.
- GANDALF THE GREY gets the whole affair rolling, wanting to interrogate Gollum and enlisting Aragorn in the search.
- ARAGORN is our chief protagonist.
- THRANDUIL, king of the Wood-elves of Mirkwood.
- LEGOLAS, prince of Mirkwood and son of Thranduil.
- SHELOB, terror of Cirith Ungol.
- SAURON, the Dark Lord.

Other potential named characters:
- BAIN, son of Bard, second king of Dale.
- BRAND, son of Bain, third king of Dale.
- MASTER OF LAKE-TOWN.
- CELEBORN of Lorien.
- GALADRIEL of Lorien.
- ELROND of Rivendell.
- ARWEN, daughter of Elrond.
- ELLADAN & ELROHIR, twin sons of Elrond.
- LORD OF THE NAZGUL, lord of Minas Morgul.

Hmmm... [In reply to] Can't Post

Do you think they'll be tempted to move into this time period the first meeting (and falling in love) of Aragorn and Arwen?

I mean, I hope not, but Hollywood does love to include a thwarted love story (see Evangeline Lily agreeing to take on the role of Tauriel as long as she's not involved in a love triangle, and how that turned out).

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

Maybe? [In reply to] Can't Post

I went back and looked at my proposed "Tale of Years" for the Peter Jackson film continuity; I might need to revise it. Here are some relevant highlights:

2915 Aragorn son of Arathorn II born on March 1st.

2941 Bilbo returns to Bag End. Aragorn begins his period of great journeys and errantries
(2941-64).

2964 Aragorn leaves the service of Ecthelion II. He is reunited with Arwen in Lórien and they
plight their troth upon the hill of Cerin Amroth.

3000 Bilbo celebrates his eleventy-first birthday and secretly leaves for Rivendell. Gandalf
journeys to Minas Tirith to investigate the Ring. At some point before his return to the
Shire Gandalf is able to capture and question Gollum.

3001 The War of the Ring begins. Frodo takes the One Ring to Rivendell. The Fellowship of
the Ring is formed.

Gandalf's interrogation of Gollum should probably be moved to the year 3001, which would also be the year of Gollum's escape from the Wood-elves. In this timeline Gollum would have encountered Shelob as early as the year 2983 (working backwards) or as late as 2997 (working forward); I'm going with the later date. Soon after, Gollum is captured by Sauron. As things stand now, I would have Gandalf enlist Aragorn's aid in 3000, after Bilbo's party and before setting out for Minas Tirith. I don't see any reason why the hunt for Gollum couldn't have begun a few years earlier; however, I haven't thought of any specific incident that would trigger Gandalf's suspicions about Bilbo's ring and cause him to want to find and question Gollum.

My timeline accounts for the time-compression within the films and would make it difficult to have the betrothal of Aragorn and Arwen intersect with the hunt for Gollum.

The engagement of Aragorn and Arwen will become Aragorn stumbling across Arwen for the first time, them falling in love and promising to be with each other.

Nice work on the timeline!

As much as I love the Hobbit movies... [In reply to] Can't Post

I understand why some people compare them to George Lucas's Star Wars prequel trilogy. I'm thinking that when "The Hunt for Gollum" comes out, we may be looking at something akin to "The Godfather part 3" or even "The Matrix Resurrections", a lesser or unnecessary addition to an already established iconic saga. In order for this to work, it has to stand on it's own and at the same time share the DNA of PJ's previous work. This interview got my hopes up, I'm pretty excited for this project, fingers crossed come 2026.

Probably a very unpopular opinion [In reply to] Can't Post

But, I would honestly be happy if they brought Evangeline Lilly back for a minor scene as Tauriel, if they show Gollum in the Woodland Realm's Dungeons.

No, she wasn't in the books at all, but I like Evangeline and I think the way Tauriel's plot line at the end of the Battle of Five Armies (basically, with her crying over Kili with no closure if she went off on her own or if Thranduil forgave her, which it seemed that he had from my view) left me disappointed with her arc as I do really like Tauriel and love Evangeline Lilly as a person and actress.

I could see her just being in the background of one scene as Gandalf talks to Gollum, maybe outside of the cell door or in the dungeon much like how you see Legolas watching as the elves lock up the dwarves in Desolation of Smaug. Or maybe as one of the elves who were on duty when Gollum escaped when the orcs raided Mirkwood.

Just my opinion, hope I didn't push too many buttons, just something I'd be ok with seeing.

I know it's not for this thread, but I'm really excited about War of the Rohirrim [In reply to] Can't Post

I think it will be a good movie, and I always liked the plotline of the men of Rohan in both the books and the two movies.

But back to the topic, I think Andy Serkis is a good choice as a director. The fact that he has done the audiobooks is proof enough of how enriched he is to Tolkien's lore. I think we are in good hands with Andy being a director. It's clear he loves Gollum and Tolkien's world as a whole.

Not controversial at all, I'd go further... [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm really not a fan of the Tauriel/Kili stuff in The Hobbit, but with Kili dead I would actually love to see a Tauriel cameo.

I'll go even further and say: I hope we see her as a major character in this movie and that her story gets more satisfying closure. The orcs attacking Mirkwood would offer a prime opportunity for her to avenge his death, and it will be redeeming to see her as more than just romantic interest.

But yeah, I'd think that would be perfect for her. I'm not against her and Kili, but I preferred her other storyline better with her being Legolas's right hand captain and her trying to fight against the evil. It was cool, so I'd see that as a coming to full circle for her.

I'm creating my own fan-fiction at this point... [In reply to] Can't Post

But if this movie is about what I think (a young Aragorn meeting Arwen and discovering himself), then things could get very interesting...

Imagine if when we meet Tauriel she has become cold and bitter following the events of The Hobbit. She meets Aragorn and they have some dialogue. Tauriel tells him that she believes relationships between elves and other races are cursed; that historically they have all ended in tragedy.

Aragorn says "What of Beren and Luthien?" and she dismisses him.

Tauriel [In reply to] Can't Post

I've suggested several times now that there might be a place in this film for Tauriel, if only because we need someone who can have a character arc. That said, I could see Gandalf and Aragorn enlisting the aid of Elladan and Elrohir, the sons of Elrond. However, their great narrative arc took place four centuries previous, when their mother Celebrian was captured and tortured by Orcs. Could that incident be moved back that far without upsetting the Tolkien fandom?

Chances this will be in HFR 3D? [In reply to] Can't Post

The Hobbit was shot at HFR (48 frames per second) to smooth the motion out for 3D.

A few directors are still pushing this tech such as Ang Lee and James Cameron. Avatar 2 introduced a new technology where the frame rate would actually change per scene - some scenes were in the standard 24fps while fast action sequences would double to 48.

Peter Jackson said in an interview that all of his future movies would be in high frame rates, because he prefers the look - but audiences and critics weren't impressed by it. So do we think he might go back on that? How does Andy Serkis feel about it? Serkis directed Venom in 3D, and also shot Mowgli in 3D, although the 3D version was never released.

What do we think? How many "I hope not"s can we get under this post Laugh

Let's just say that if they turn it into a daily Soap Opera, it might be appropriate. Otherwise, it's just Peter succumbing to the latest fad that ages a film. Technology should be hidden when used - not part of the story. Is what a person wears more important than the person? Do the clothes really make the film?
