The Northern Lights Can't Post

Anyone in the Northern U.S. get to see it tonight??

For those going "huh?" there's a very strong solar storm happening right now, resulting in the aurora borealis being visible farther south than usual.

I'll try to remember to pop outside tonight [In reply to] Can't Post

as the Aurora Australis is meant to be going off too. Last night in Christchurch there was a red light to the sky, and there's talk of it being visible even in Auckland tonight.

Too cloudy [In reply to] Can't Post

Unsure

And clouds today. As Lucy from "Peanuts" would say, you'd think they'd schedule these things better! Laugh

I'm in NW England by the sea [In reply to] Can't Post

and for the first time ever, I saw them properly. Not the glorious rippling curtains of the Arctic skies, but from what at first I thought to be a misty cloud, slowly growing casual sweeping brushstrokes spread up the sky over the sea and up above me which became tinged with red, framing Ursa Major. Others with cameras took photos showing far more definition and colour, but I'm just delighted to have seen them. There's a possibility of seeing them tonight too. Fingers crossed!

We saw them in mid-Michigan! [In reply to] Can't Post

They were struggling to get through some cloud-cover; but they definitely were very busy doing their thing!!

We're supposed to be able to see them tonight (Saturday) and Sunday; but we have rain all of today and tonight... so the odds are thin.

We have been there and back again.

I was out past midnight [In reply to] Can't Post

snapping photos. My own eyes just saw streaks and a faint wash of color, but my camera got some amazing blues, greens, and purples! A first for me, if you don't count seeing the aurora from a plane once while flying over Canada. Usually when the aurora comes south of the border, it's cloudy here.

Too Much Light Pollution! [In reply to] Can't Post

The lights of Buffalo and Niagara Falls overwhelmed the aurora for us. And tonight looks to be too cloudy.

Same. [In reply to] Can't Post

There are heaps of great aurora photos taken all across NZ - https://www.stuff.co.nz/...aroa-due-space-storm - but by the time I got outside, cloud had rolled in. Unsure

They looked glorious [In reply to] Can't Post

in other people's pictures :) Visible much, much further north than usual here in Aotearoa, but not *quite* north enough for us. Crystal clear skies, and we're in a rural area with little light pollution, so it would've been perfect apart from the small matter of not living in the right place!

I'm very happy for those of you who did get to see them.

To think some folks were lucky enough to get this and the total solar eclipse within about a month of each other!

We saw them in Colorado. [In reply to] Can't Post

They were barely visible with the naked eye, but the camera picked them up pretty well when I set the ISO to 1600. The coolest thing was so subtle I wasn't sure I was really seeing it: I recently had cataract surgery and sometimes I get flashing lights in my eyes. But based on what other people said I think it was real; for just a few seconds I saw waves of light sweeping across the sky from north to south, traveling unimaginably fast, about two seconds for each wave all the way across the sky.
