What I'd like to see... [In reply to] Can't Post

I'd like to see them go back to 35mm film and not use digital cameras at all. Or perhaps IMAX 70mm. If this is a smaller scale movie that could be an appropriate format.

Ditto. [In reply to] Can't Post

The crisp, clear visuals of the Hobbit movies don't fit with the gritty, smell-the-sweat-off-the-screen vibe of the LOTR movies.

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

To 3D or not to 3D [In reply to] Can't Post

3D and/or HFR or not, I think digital is here to stay -- at least until the next innovation comes along.

Quantum Fonts [In reply to] Can't Post

Not much to imagine beyond digital but quantum AI where an infinitely multipath story can be presented on the fly. Sometimes Sauron wins, or sometimes Game of Thrones has a decent ending. Or deep fakes where the "film" provides professional actors as visual and audio "font" templates upon which you can places scans of yourself and your friends, who then appear as if they are in the movie doing professional-level acting. Sometimes you're Gandalf and sometimes a Corsair of Umbar. I'm sure Peter would immediately adopt this trendy idea.

Oppenheimer was very successful [In reply to] Can't Post

IMAX film is an innovation in its own right, so I could see them considering that, and it's a fitting format for a smaller, character focused movie.

But Peter Jackson does still own 48 RED Digital cameras and he's pretty much sponsored by RED, so I think that's most likely what they'll use. Which means 3D is also probable.

I think there's been a good trend of filmmakers moving away from digital though, particularly embracing practical effects over CGI. So hopefully they'll take The Hobbit's criticisms on board and give us more practical effects/sets/creatures.

With how far animatronics have evolved recently, I would love to see them build a fully animated troll.

I believe... [In reply to] Can't Post

...Ang Lee has recently said he's moved on from 3D, for what it's worth on a small unrelated point. Smile

Excoriation [In reply to] Can't Post

You got me interested. He didn't just say he moved on. I did a quick search and found an article in Variety where he excoriates 3D. The headline reads:

Quote
Ang Lee Rejects 3D Now Because It’s ‘So Bad’ and the Whole Film Industry Is ‘Not Made’ for It: ‘The Filmmakers Are Bad. The Theaters Are Bad’

Amusingly, the excoriation goes on for so long, I'd have to quote the entire article. So you can just read it here:
https://variety.com/2024/film/news/ang-lee-3d-filmmaking-dead-theaters-bad-1235956946/

It dismisses the entire effort and investment with a sweep of the hand. And I agree it's never been worth it. It's always a gimmick.

Every ten or twenty years, there's a new 3D fad saying they fixed everything and it's great now. No it ain't.

Jaw drop [In reply to] Can't Post

I've got to say thought that my jaw was on the floor for most of the first Avatar film in cinemas. It was quite something to behold for the first time.

I'm with you though - 99% of that stuff is just gimmicks.

(James Cameron can do whatever he wants though and I'll still line up to see it.)

"So which story do you prefer?"
"The one with the tiger. That's the better story."
"Thank you. And so it goes with God."
