\"DesolationOfSmaugEECover\"<\/a> The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Extended Edition is out today as a download from iTunes!<\/p>\n

As we did last year<\/a> with An Unexpected Journey EE, TOR.n has compiled detailed descriptions and screencaps from the 25 minutes of extended footage in The Desolation of Smaug.<\/p>\n

3:26 – At the Prancing Pony, after Gandalf asks Thorin what he is doing in Bree, Thorin responds that he received word that his father (Thrain) had been seen wandering the wilds of Dunland, but did not find him. \u00a0Thorin then tells Gandalf that he’s like all the others, and thinks that Thrain in dead. \u00a0“I was not at the Battle of Moria”, Gandalf says. “No”, answers Thorin, “but I was”.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Flashback to the battle shown in An Unexpected Journey; After Thror was slain, Thrain tries to restrain Thorin from running after Azog.<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Thrain: Azog means to kill us all! One by one, he will destroy the line of Durin. \u00a0But by my life, he shall not take my son!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Thorin (voiceover): My father lead a charge toward the Dimril gate, but he never returned. \u00a0Thrain is gone, they told me. \u00a0He is one of the fallen. \u00a0But at the end of that battle I searched amongst the slain, to the last body. \u00a0My father was not among the dead.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gandalf (back at the Prancing Pony) Thorin, it’s been a long time since anything but rumor was heard of Thrain.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Thorin: He still lives, I am sure of it!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gandalf: The ring your grandfather wore. one of seven given to the Dwarf Lords many years ago…what became of it?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Thorin: He gave it to my father before they went into battle.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gandalf: So Thrain was wearing it when he went missing…<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

16:00 –\u00a0<\/strong>After Beorn shifts from bear to man, the scene cuts him entering the house and Bilbo seeing him. \u00a0It’s morning, and we see a quick shot of wood being chopped. \u00a0Bilbo wakes up, sees the bees, then joins the dwarves standing near the front door. \u00a0They are arguing about how to get away from Beorn without being seen.<\/p>\n

Nori: I say we should leg it and slip out the back way!<\/p>\n

Dwalin: I’m not running from anyone, beast or no.<\/p>\n

Gandalf tells them there is no point in arguing, as they will be unable to make it to Mirkwood without Beorn’s help. \u00a0Gandalf decides to go outside and speak with Beorn. \u00a0He brings Bilbo with him.<\/p>\n

Gandalf: This will require some delicate handling; we must tread carefully. \u00a0The last person to have startled him was torn to shreds.<\/p>\n

Gandalf tells the dwarves to wait inside until he gives the signal that it’s safe to come out.<\/p>\n

Bofur, looking out a high window, asks “What’s the signal”, but Gandalf and Bilbo have already gone.<\/p>\n

Gandalf, clearly nervous, announces himself to Beorn, who is chopping wood.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

“Good morning!…….’Good morning!’<\/p>\n

Beorn stops and turns slowly to Gandalf. \u00a0“Who are you?”<\/p>\n

Gandalf: I’m Gandalf. \u00a0Gandalf the Grey.<\/p>\n

Beorn: \u00a0Never heard of him.<\/p>\n

Gandalf: I’m a wizard! \u00a0Perhaps you’ve heard of my colleague, Radagast the Brown. \u00a0He resides in the southern borders of Mirkwood.<\/p>\n

Beorn: What do you want?<\/p>\n

Gandalf: Well, simply to thank you for your hospitality. \u00a0You may have noticed that we took refuge in your lodgins last night.<\/p>\n

Bilbo, who had been hiding behind Gandalf, pokes his head around for a better look. \u00a0Beorn spots him and frowns.<\/p>\n

Beorn: Who is this little fellow?<\/p>\n

Gandalf: Well, this would be Mr. Baggins, of the Shire.<\/p>\n

Beorn: He’s not a dwarf, is he?<\/p>\n

Gandalf explains that Bilbo is a Hobbit, and from a good family. \u00a0Beorn asks them why there here, and Gandalf tries to explain the quest, while waving his arms animatedly.<\/p>\n

Bofur, still watching from the window, takes the waving as Gandalf’s sign that they should come out. \u00a0Dwalin and Balin come out first, and introduce themselves. \u00a0Beorn is clearly not pleased to see them. \u00a0Gandalf confesses that there are more dwarves, and slowly the rest come out. \u00a0Thorin comes out last, and Beorn appears to recognize him. \u00a0Scene then cuts to the dwarves eating breakfast.<\/p>\n

Note: \u00a0While Beorn is describing the Mirkwood elves (“Less wise, more dangerous”), the point of view shots are in a different order than the theatrical edition, although the dialogue is the same<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

23:23 –\u00a0In the woods near Beorn’s house. \u00a0We see the dwarves with the ponies that Beorn has lent them, preparing to leave.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Beorn: You will leave my ponies before you enter the forest.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gandalf: You have my word.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A bird squawks. \u00a0Gandalf remarks that they are being watched.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Beorn: Yes. The Orcs will not give up. \u00a0They will hunt the dwarves until they see them destroyed.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gandalf: Why now? \u00a0What has made the Defiler crawl from his hole?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Beorn: \u00a0There is an alliance between the Orcs of Moria and the sorcerer of Dol Guldur.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gandalf: Are you sure of this?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Beorn: Packs have been seen gathering there. \u00a0Each day more and more come.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gandalf: \u00a0What do you know of this sorcerer. \u00a0The one they call the Necromancer.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Beorn: \u00a0I know he is not what he seems. \u00a0Fell things are drawn to his power. \u00a0Azog pays homage to him.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Thorin interrupts them and tells Gandalf they must leave. \u00a0Gandalf turns to leave.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Beorn: \u00a0There is more. \u00a0Not long past word had spread that the dead had been seen walking near the high fells of Rhudaur.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gandalf: \u00a0The dead?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Beorn: \u00a0Is it true? \u00a0Are there tombs in those mountains?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nVoiceover from Galadriel, \u00a0as we watch a group of men carrying what appears to be a body wrapped in linens and chains: \u00a0When Angmar fell, the men of the north took his body and all that he possessed, and sealed it in the high fells of Rhudaur. \u00a0Deep within the rock, they buried him in a tomb so dark, it would never come to light.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gandalf: Yes, there are tombs there.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Beorn: I remember a time when a great evil ruled these lands. \u00a0One powerful enough to raise the dead. \u00a0If that enemy has returned to Middle-earth, I would have you tell me.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gandalf: \u00a0Saruman the White says it’s not possible. \u00a0The enemy was destroyed and will never return.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Beorn: \u00a0And what does Gandalf the Grey say?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gandalf is silent. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Beorn: \u00a0Go now while you still have the light. \u00a0Your hunters are not far behind.<\/strong><\/p>\n

We then see the Company arrive at the edge of Mirkwood, and Gandalf tells them he must leave.<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

29:18 –\u00a0<\/strong>As Gandalf prepares to leave, he warns the others: This is not the Greenwood of old. \u00a0There is a stream in the woods that carries a dark enchantment. \u00a0Do not touch the water. \u00a0Cross only by the stone bridge. \u00a0The very air of the forest is heavy with illusion.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

31:00 –\u00a0<\/strong>After entering the forest, the dwarves are just starting to feel the effects of the Mirkwood air. \u00a0They find the remains of the bridge that Gandalf mentioned, but it is impassable. \u00a0Bofur suggests that they swim across, but Thorin reminds him of Gandalfs\u00a0warning. \u00a0They try to find another way across; \u00a0Kili finds some large vines and starts to climb over. \u00a0Thorin tells him to stop, and sends Bilbo over instead. \u00a0Bilbo just makes it to the other side. \u00a0He tries to warn the others that something doesn’t seem right, but they have already started crossing over. \u00a0Before he can make it to the other side, Bombur falls asleep.<\/p>\n

Just as Thorin crosses over to Bilbo, Bilbo looks up into the forest and sees a\u00a0Patronus<\/del> glowing white stag. \u00a0Thorin takes aim with his bow.<\/p>\n

\"IMG_0454\"<\/p>\n

Bilbo: \u00a0What are you doing??<\/p>\n

Thorin and the stag lock eyes, and Thorin fires an arrow, but misses.<\/p>\n

Bilbo: \u00a0You shouldn’t have done that. \u00a0It’s bad luck<\/p>\n

Thorin: \u00a0I don’t believe in luck \u00a0We make our own luck.<\/p>\n

The rest of the dwarves make it over, and pick Bombur up from the water, and carry him into the forest. \u00a0 Bilbo then makes the mistake of tugging at a spiderweb, sending vibrations up into the trees.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

1:26:45 – We see the Master in his study. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Master: \u00a0You mark my words, that troublemaking bargeman is behind this! (instead of cutting to Bard, we stay with the Master) \u00a0No one else would have the…<\/strong><\/p>\n

Alfrid: \u00a0Bollocks, sire. \u00a0(holding up a plate of food) Ram and goat, saut\u00e9ed in a lovely little mushroom gravy<\/strong><\/p>\n

We then see the Master eating (and who, in this writers opinion, is tied with Denethor as most disgusting eater).<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"IMG_0457\"<\/p>\n

Alfrid: \u00a0In an ideal world, sire, we’d arrest him. \u00a0But Bard has the favor of the people. \u00a0They see him as a leader. \u00a0Someone they can truly admire. \u00a0Modest…intelligent…handsome…athletic.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Master: \u00a0Yes, he’s clearly modelling himself on me. \u00a0But that’s no crime. \u00a0I wonder…I wonder if some ancient law might exist…that forbids bargemen from asking questions. \u00a0Do you think such a venerable statute might exist?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Alfrid: \u00a0Almost certainly, sire. \u00a0I’ll write one immediately.<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

1:28:38 –\u00a0<\/strong>After Bard frees the dwarves and Bilbo from the barrels, they head toward Bard’s home.<\/p>\n

Bilbo: \u00a0What is this place?<\/p>\n

Thorin: \u00a0This, Master Baggins, is the world of Men.<\/p>\n

A Laketown guard spots them and orders them to stop. \u00a0They take off running, but are soon cornered by another guard. \u00a0The dwarves and Bilbo attack the guards, and quickly knock them out with pots, pans, and mops. \u00a0 The dwarves, and some of the townsfolk, hide the unconscious guards just as another, Braga, appears. \u00a0Braga has a look around but doesn’t see anything amiss.<\/p>\n

\"IMG_0459\"<\/p>\n

Bard: \u00a0Her Braga, your wife would look lovely in this.<\/p>\n

Braga: \u00a0What do you know of my wife?<\/p>\n

Bard: \u00a0I know her as well as any man in this town.<\/p>\n

Braga gets angry and storms off.<\/p>\n

The company leave, and arrive at Bard’s house, where they are greeted by his son.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

1:39:22 – As the dwarves and Bilbo are sneaking into the armory to get weapons, the scene shifts to the Master of Laketown’s home. \u00a0Alfrid is standing on the balcony.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Master: \u00a0Prophecy? \u00a0Who dragged up that old nonsense?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Alfrid: \u00a0People, sire. \u00a0They’re gathering in the streets. \u00a0They’re saying that a king will return to the Lonely Mountain, and that the rivers will once more run with gold.<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Master: \u00a0Rivers of gold? \u00a0Poppy(burps)cock.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Alfrid: \u00a0As you say, sire. \u00a0But people will believe what they want to believe. \u00a0It’s been a long time since they’ve seen any riches. \u00a0The old tales offer them hope.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The scene shifts back to the armory and the dwarves grabbing as many weapons as they can carry.<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

1:42:25 – After Thorin promises the citizens of Laketown that if they help them, they will be rewarded with riches. \u00a0The celebration is interrupted by Alfrid.<\/p>\n

Alfrid: \u00a0Why should we take you at your word, eh? \u00a0We don’t know nothing about you. \u00a0Who here can vouch for your character?<\/p>\n

Bilbo, standing in the crowd, raises his hand.<\/p>\n

Bilbo: \u00a0Me. \u00a0I’ll vouch for him. \u00a0Now, I have travelled far with these dwarves through great danger, and if Thorin Oakenshield gives his word, then he will keep it.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

1:47:25 – As the dwarves climb into their boats and leave Laketown, the scene cuts to the Master and Alfrid walking back to the Masters home. \u00a0Guards walk in front of them, pushing townsfolk out of the way.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Alfrid: \u00a0Masterfully handled, sire. \u00a0Your popularity has never been so high. \u00a0The entire town twittering your name.<\/p>\n

Master: \u00a0Yes, it was rather clever. \u00a0Either our little friends return triumphant, in which case I stand to make a pretty penny. \u00a0 Or old Smaug dines on dwarf for a day or two. \u00a0The important thing is they’re off our hands.<\/p>\n

Just as they are about the enter the Master’s home, Fili stops them.<\/p>\n

Fili: \u00a0Please, wait! \u00a0Please! \u00a0We need your help, my brother is sick!<\/p>\n

Master: \u00a0Sick?? is it infectious? \u00a0Get back! \u00a0Alfrid, get them back!<\/p>\n

Oin: \u00a0Please, we need medicine.<\/p>\n

Alfrid: \u00a0Do I look like an apothecary? \u00a0Haven’t we given you enough? \u00a0The Master’s a busy man. \u00a0He hasn’t got time to worry about sick dwarves. \u00a0Be gone. \u00a0Will you go on? \u00a0Clear off!<\/p>\n

Master: \u00a0What this town needs, Alfrid, is a good purge. \u00a0Starting with a certain troublemaker who saw fit to question my authority.<\/p>\n

1:49:15 – Additional footage of the dwarves and Bilbo climbing the Lonely Mountain, and arriving at Dale. \u00a0A thrush flies by them.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bilbo: \u00a0So quiet.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Balin: \u00a0Wasn’t always like this. \u00a0Once, these slopes were lined with woodlands. \u00a0The trees were filled with birdsong<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

1:52:18 – \u00a0Gandalf enters Dol Guldur, and walks into a chamber. \u00a0He hears something. \u00a0The scene cuts back to the dwarves and Bilbo searching for the entrance to Erebor. \u00a0Cut back to Gandalf.<\/p>\n

Gandalf: \u00a0The evil that is hidden here, I command it reveal itself!<\/p>\n

Gandalf walks into a courtyard, and hears something. \u00a0We see a figure high up, and pounces down onto Gandalf. \u00a0After a scuffle, Gandalf pushes the figure off him, and off of a ledge. \u00a0Gandalf runs down and chases after him. \u00a0Gandalf runs through corridors, hearing growls around him, and we see the figure chasing him. \u00a0Suddenly the figure leaps out and attacks Gandalf again. \u00a0Gandalf tackles the figure, puts his hand on the figure’s head, and begins chanting. \u00a0The figure begins to calm down.<\/p>\n

Gandalf: \u00a0Thrain, son of Thror. \u00a0My old friend.<\/p>\n

\"IMG_0476\"<\/p>\n

Thrain: \u00a0Gandalf?<\/p>\n

Gandalf smiles with relief.<\/p>\n

Thrain: \u00a0A lifetime. \u00a0I’ve been here a lifetime.<\/p>\n

Gandalf: \u00a0I’m so sorry I gave you up for dead.<\/p>\n

Thrain: I had a son. \u00a0(quick flashback to the Battle of Moria) \u00a0Thorin!<\/p>\n

Gandalf: \u00a0And you will see him again. \u00a0Come, we must leave.<\/p>\n

Thrain: \u00a0The Orcs had Moria. \u00a0War…we were at war. \u00a0I was surrounded. \u00a0The Defiler. \u00a0Azog the Defiler had come. \u00a0(flashback to battle) \u00a0We see Azog approach Thrain on the battlefield and knock him down. \u00a0We also see the Dwarven Ring of Power on Thrain’s hand. (flashback ends). \u00a0Gandalf lifts Thrain’s hand…and his ring is missing, along with his ringfinger.<\/p>\n

Thrain: \u00a0They took it.<\/p>\n

Gandalf: \u00a0The last of the Seven. \u00a0Come, let’s get you out of here.<\/p>\n

Thrain: \u00a0There is no way out! \u00a0They will stop you! \u00a0The serpents will stop you!<\/p>\n

We then see some vines start to move, but Gandalf dismisses it as an illusion. \u00a0Thrain then reveals that he had been tortured by the Orcs, but had told them nothing of the map and key to Erebor. \u00a0Gandalf tells Thrain that he would be very proud of Thorin, and his quest, but Thrain becomes upset and tells Gandalf that no one should enter the mountain.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

2:09:21 – Back to Thrain and Gandalf, running through Dol Guldur.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Thrain: \u00a0He is waiting for them! \u00a0They are in league – the dragon and the one!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Azog jumps out and attacks Gandalf, knocking him to the ground. \u00a0Gandalf stops Azog with his staff, then looking over the ledge, sees the army of Orcs and wargs. \u00a0 Gandalf uses the power of his staff to escape with Thrain. \u00a0Gandalf destroys the bridge, and then is confronted by the Necromancer. \u00a0(note: \u00a0scene is the same as the theatrical edition, only with Thrain added back in).<\/p>\n

\"IMG_0480\"<\/p>\n

Thrain looks up at Gandalf: \u00a0Tell Thorin I love him. \u00a0Will you do that? \u00a0Will you tell my son that I loved him?<\/p>\n

Gandalf: \u00a0You will tell him yourself.<\/p>\n

Thrain: \u00a0It’s too late.<\/p>\n

Tendrils of smoke whip out from the Necromancer, grabbing Thrain and killing him.<\/p>\n
