You know, that crazy dwarf \u2013 king-to-be character \u2013 who was supposed to make an appearance in\u00a0The Desolation of Smaug<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 but clearly didn\u2019t. Upon seeing the first two films in\u00a0The Hobbit<\/em>\u00a0trilogy, Thr\u00e1in II (son of Thr\u00f3r, father of Thorin Oakenshield) appears\u00a0to be a rather key ingredient in the whole narrative \u2013 despite his lack of\u00a0participation in the story.<\/p>\n

After all,\u00a0he\u2019s the one who gave the key and map of Erebor to Gandalf prior to the Quest<\/span>. Without which, let\u2019s face it, the adventure would not have been the same.<\/p>\n

In the cinematic adaptations, our glimpses of Thr\u00e1in\u2019s character come in the first hour or so of\u00a0An Unexpected Journey<\/em>. We meet him in the prologue as the son of King Thr\u00f3r and the\u00a0bold defence he mounts alongside his heir, as the dragon attacks Erebor. Next, we see him in a flashback to the battle of Azanulbizar and after the death of Thr\u00f3r, he\u00a0\u201cwas driven mad by grief. He went missing, taken prisoner or killed.”<\/em><\/p>\n

The uncertainty of whether he\u2019s dead or alive, proves to be a point of\u00a0speculation in the development of the story.<\/span><\/p>\n

Those who\u2019ve read the book learn that the acquisition of the key and map of Erebor occur whilst\u00a0Gandalf investigates and discovers Thr\u00e1in lying in a pit in Dol Guldur \u2013 close to death.<\/p>\n

Originally, a scene showing Gandalf and Thr\u00e1in\u2019s meeting appeared in the trailers forAn Unexpected Journey<\/em>, but after the decision to split the film from two to three, that scene was moved to the second installment.<\/p>\n

However, once again, the missing\u00a0dwarf seems to have remained just that: missing.<\/span><\/p>\n
