Eowyn<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>By William Diehl<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Now, hear the Lay of Eowyn,<br \/>\nA shield-maiden of yore,<br \/>\nWho lived her life in fealty<br \/>\nAnd loyalty, and war.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">In Meduseld, King Theoden<br \/>\nHad no daughter of his own,<br \/>\nSo he bade his sister\u2019s child live<br \/>\nWith him in his great home.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">A lovely maiden of golden hair<br \/>\nKnown all across the Mark,<br \/>\nBut a shield-maiden must prove herself<br \/>\nAt the coming of the Dark.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">It happened many years ago<br \/>\nBefore our age had come.<br \/>\nEvil fell upon the Rohirrim<br \/>\nAnd no more songs were sung.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Across the fields of Rohan<br \/>\nAnd the grasses of the Wold,<br \/>\nInvaders from a far-off land<br \/>\nRode fearlessly and bold.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Though Theoden was wizened,<br \/>\nHe bore a majesty of old.<br \/>\nHe sent the mighty Eorlingas<br \/>\nTo East and Western Folds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Upon the west the invaders crept,<br \/>\nThe orcs of an evil lord,<br \/>\nWhere Theodred, son of Theoden<br \/>\nMet doom by a goblin-sword.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">To Theoden, King of Rohan, this news<br \/>\nDealt a mighty blow.<br \/>\nBy evil counsel Theoden was<br \/>\nConvinced that he was old.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">But from the North came a mighty sword,<br \/>\nThe blade of Anduril.<br \/>\nThe lost king of the western lands<br \/>\nHad come in times of ill.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">This proud man\u2019s name was Aragorn,<br \/>\nSon of Arathorn by birth.<br \/>\nHis grand arrival in Meduseld<br \/>\nBrought happiness and mirth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">He approached the lofty dais<br \/>\nWhere Theoden was set,<br \/>\nAnd suddenly he saw Eowyn<br \/>\nWho smiled when they met.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">A finer warrior she had never seen,<br \/>\nThis man of jet-black hair,<br \/>\nHis face was proud of bearing<br \/>\nThough his hands showed signs of wear.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And he beheld a shield-maiden &#8211;<br \/>\nSo lovely yet so stern,<br \/>\nA woman of strength and beauty<br \/>\nFor which any man would yearn.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Then Theoden and Aragorn rode<br \/>\nTo battle in the West,<br \/>\nLeaving Eowyn to think of them and<br \/>\nManage Meduseld her best.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Across the grass of Rohan came<br \/>\nTidings of victory!<br \/>\nNow, the mighty warrior Aragorn<br \/>\nWould come for her to see.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">For many days she waited until<br \/>\nFinally, he returned.<br \/>\nShe was overjoyed to see him<br \/>\nBut shocked with what she learned.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">He announced that in the morning he<br \/>\nWould go upon his way,<br \/>\nLeaving lonely, anguished Eowyn<br \/>\nIn Meduseld to stay.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">She begged to come with Aragorn<br \/>\nAs he rode away to war.<br \/>\nBut Aragorn would have her not<br \/>\nAnd rode out from the door.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Soon Theoden, the King, returned;<br \/>\nA battle he had won.<br \/>\nBut preparations were underway,<br \/>\nFor war had just begun!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">A muster of the countrymen<br \/>\nPrepared to travel east,<br \/>\nBut Eowyn was to be left behind<br \/>\nTo guard their hall of feast.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">A night passed in unhappiness,<br \/>\nNo comfort from the moon.<br \/>\nIndeed no morning ever came,<br \/>\nOnly the Dark of Doom.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">But Eowyn was resolute,<br \/>\nShe the King did not obey.<br \/>\nWith mail corslet and silver sword<br \/>\nAmong the men she made her way.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">With the Eored of the King she rode<br \/>\nThrough many perilous days,<br \/>\nYet though she knew the danger<br \/>\nShe would still not turn away.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">At last the mighty Rohirrim<br \/>\nCame to the battle-ground.<br \/>\nAnd Theoden of the Riddermark<br \/>\nLed a charge of great renown.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Through countless ranks of enemy<br \/>\nHis proud horse, Snowmane, flew.<br \/>\nTheir banner he hewed to the ground,<br \/>\nTheir leader Theoden slew.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The Rohirrim had changed the tide<br \/>\nOf battle on that day.<br \/>\nThe fearful Darkness on the land<br \/>\nBegan to go away.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">But suddenly there was horror<br \/>\nAs men looked toward the sky.<br \/>\nFor they heard a screech of terror<br \/>\nAnd saw a shadow flying high.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Alas, the King of Darkness on a<br \/>\nFell-winged steed had come,<br \/>\nSo Snowmane reared with terror<br \/>\nDumping Theoden to the ground.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Poor Theoden\u2019s days were over as he<br \/>\nWas pinned beneath his steed,<br \/>\nWith the ever-nearing evil wraith<br \/>\nContemplating wicked deeds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">But Eowyn had observed the King<br \/>\nAs doom upon him fell,<br \/>\nAnd the shield-maiden began the deed of which<br \/>\nMany tales would tell.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The evil wraith approached the King<br \/>\nTo desecrate the dead.<br \/>\nAlthough the men were paralyzed<br \/>\nThis maiden felt no dread.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Defying the dark she leaped from her horse,<br \/>\nRunning to her liege\u2019s side.<br \/>\nThe fierceness of the shield-maiden<br \/>\nMade men\u2019s eyes open wide.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cCome not between the Nazgul and his<br \/>\nPrey,\u201d the Ringwraith said,<br \/>\n\u201cOr he shall take thee to his land<br \/>\nWhere thou wouldst wish for death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cDost thou not know the prophecy,<br \/>\nNo man may hinder me!\u201d<br \/>\nThese evil words of terror made<br \/>\nMen loath to watch and see.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cThou dost not look upon a man<br \/>\nBut a woman of the Mark!\u201d<br \/>\nAnd as she threw her helmet down<br \/>\nHer hair lit up the dark.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cBe gone, foul dwimmerlaik,\u201d she said,<br \/>\n\u201cYou stand before my kin,<br \/>\nFor living or evil dark undead I<br \/>\nWill smite thee if I can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">So firm a challenge her had not had<br \/>\nIn this age of the land.<br \/>\nHe charged the shield-maiden, a<br \/>\nGreat mace in his hand.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">He, with a screech, the mace let fall,<br \/>\nIt broke her shield arm.<br \/>\nBut suddenly with a cry of pain<br \/>\nHe wheeled in alarm.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">A Halfling, holbytla, had travelled<br \/>\nFrom a far-off land to war,<br \/>\nAnd seeing the peril of Eowyn<br \/>\nHad come to lend his sword.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">As the Nazgul stood above Eowyn,<br \/>\nHis mace raised in the air,<br \/>\nThe Halfling\u2019s sword thrust in his leg<br \/>\nAnd a howl went through the air.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The Ringwraith stumbled backward, now<br \/>\nHelplessly in pain,<br \/>\nFor now the labors of Eowyn had<br \/>\nNot all been in vain.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Her sword she raised above his head,<br \/>\nThough none could see his flesh,<br \/>\nAnd driving her sword into his face<br \/>\nThere came the howl of death.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The sword splintered and fragmented,<br \/>\nEowyn fell to the ground.<br \/>\nThe black breath was upon her<br \/>\nAnd she lay without a sound.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">She was borne with honor from the<br \/>\nField to the Tower of the Guard,<br \/>\nWhere rested she among the slain<br \/>\nOf countless soldiers hard.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">But ho! The mighty Aragorn to his<br \/>\nKingdom had returned.<br \/>\nHe won the battle on the field whence<br \/>\nOf Eowyn he heard.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cThe hands of a King are healing hands,\u201d<br \/>\nSaid Ioreth the Old,<br \/>\nAnd Aragorn, the long lost King,<br \/>\nKnew healing arts of old.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">He saved the valiant Eowyn<br \/>\nAnd left her to grow strong.<br \/>\nFor he had still a war to fight<br \/>\nAnd soon he hurried on.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">As Eowyn recovered, she<br \/>\nLonged for battle still;<br \/>\nA shield-maiden must prove herself<br \/>\nIn times of dark and ill.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">She met a young man, Faramir,<br \/>\nThe ruler of the Tower.<br \/>\nFor he too had been nearly killed<br \/>\nIn Gondor\u2019s darkest hour.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">For Faramir this shield-maiden<br \/>\nWas a pleasant sight indeed,<br \/>\nAnd soon he fell in love with her<br \/>\nThough him she did not see.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Her heart on another man was set,<br \/>\nThat ranger of the North.<br \/>\nShe longed for news of battle<br \/>\nAs the messengers rode forth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">But now the tidings darkened,<br \/>\nTurning new hope to despair.<br \/>\nAnd Faramir and Eowyn<br \/>\nTogether began to fare.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The two proud warriors fell in love<br \/>\nUpon the Tower of the Sun.<br \/>\nAnd suddenly the tidings came that<br \/>\nThe final war was won!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">As all the western lands rejoiced with<br \/>\nHard-earned victory,<br \/>\nThe shield-maiden made it known that<br \/>\nFaramir\u2019s wife she\u2019d be.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The two were joined in happiness<br \/>\nAs all the world rejoiced,<br \/>\nWhile all the blessings of Gondor and<br \/>\nThe Rohirrim were voiced.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The two dwelled in Ithilien,<br \/>\nLand of eternal spring.<br \/>\nThe two lived ever in happiness<br \/>\nWhere birds and minstrels sing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Oh, here is come the end of the<br \/>\nLay of Eowyn-<br \/>\nThe shield-maiden of the Mark; the<br \/>\nPrincess of Ithilien.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~*~~<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">The Fellowship<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>By: Olivia B<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Legolas:<br \/>\nI shall came back in spring<br \/>\nwhen gold leaves fall from trees.<br \/>\nI shall come sit by the river<br \/>\nand dream of the seas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Gimli:<br \/>\nI will come back to the mountain,<br \/>\nand look upon brethren who died.<br \/>\nThen I will dig down in the dark<br \/>\nfor the true silver metal hide.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Boromir:<br \/>\nI will never come back home,<br \/>\nbut my soul shall go to the hall<br \/>\nof my father&#8217;s kindred history,<br \/>\nnow hear my horn&#8217;s last call.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Aragorn:<br \/>\nI must win my crown back by right,<br \/>\nand correct my ancestor&#8217;s bane.<br \/>\nI have used the sword that was broken,<br \/>\nto start the dominion of man&#8217;s reign.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Gandalf:<br \/>\nI will go back now across the seas,<br \/>\nfor my work to bring peace here is done.<br \/>\nI have used magic, wisdom, and fireworks<br \/>\nso the hobbits can keep having fun.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Frodo:<br \/>\nI shall come back in summertime,<br \/>\nto my hole &#8216;neath the hill with round door.<br \/>\nI have saved my lovely Shire land,<br \/>\nbut my calling is to a distant seashore.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Sam:<br \/>\nI came back to the lover I left,<br \/>\nto my garden and hedge&#8217;s home.<br \/>\nI have been the most faithful companion,<br \/>\nbut my heart wants a hole to roam.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Pippin:<br \/>\nI came back from battles with plenty,<br \/>\nand served as a white tree guard man.<br \/>\nI left my home as a fool, but lo<br \/>\nI returned a great soldier of the land.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Merry:<br \/>\nI shall come back a new, wiser hobbit,<br \/>\nfor I saw war but pain did not stop me.<br \/>\nI fought with horse lords in a great battle,<br \/>\nand saw sights I never thought I&#8217;d see.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~*~~<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">Arwen&#8217;s Song<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>By Elessar&#8217;s Queen<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">We met at dusk in Imladris wood;<br \/>\nHe called, &#8220;Tin\u00faviel!&#8221;<br \/>\nAs Beren called in years long past,<br \/>\nFar west of Rivendell.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">In L\u00f3rien of singing gold<br \/>\nWe met at length once more;<br \/>\nI plighted troth to Arathorn&#8217;s son<br \/>\nOn Amroth&#8217;s hill of lore.<br \/>\nI turned away from Elven-home<br \/>\nAnd gave to him my love;<br \/>\nImmortal life I rejected then<br \/>\nAnd naught could my heart move.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Estel went far a-journeying<br \/>\nTill war inevitable came.<br \/>\nThrough Eru&#8217;s grace Ring passed away,<br \/>\nThe Shadow fell in shame.<br \/>\nIn City of Kings our hands were joined<br \/>\nAt midsummer of year;<br \/>\nAnd though he&#8217;d kingdom, wealth, and power,<br \/>\n&#8216;Twas me he held most dear.<br \/>\nBut at long last his years were spent;<br \/>\nHe lay in Silent Street<br \/>\nAs still and cold as hardest stone.<br \/>\nOur son took Estel&#8217;s seat.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I chose to bear the Doom of Men<br \/>\nThat day so long ago;<br \/>\nI now must bear the Doom of Men,<br \/>\nWould I or would I no.<br \/>\nI&#8217;ll not be conquered at last test \u2013<br \/>\nI who renounced the Foe.<br \/>\nThere&#8217;s life past death, His gift to Men,<br \/>\nRelief from bitter load.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">My mortal love, I grieve for you<br \/>\nBeneath these fading trees<br \/>\nOf what was once fair L\u00f3rien,<br \/>\nForsaken for the seas.<br \/>\nI too now lay me down to sleep<br \/>\nUpon this hill of ours,<br \/>\nTo lie, perchance, forevermore<br \/>\nIn nature&#8217;s golden bower.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">O Elbereth Gilthoniel,<br \/>\nYour daughter Arwen sleeps.<br \/>\nO Eru, take me to Your land<br \/>\nBeyond the Sundered Seas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~*~~<\/p>\n<p>Read all the poems submitted for <a title=\"The Great Hall of Poets - August 2014\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/the-great-hall-of-poets-august-2014\/\" target=\"_blank\">August here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"The Great Hall of Poets\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/the-great-hall-of-poets\/\" target=\"_blank\">Click here to read the complete collection in The Great Hall of Poets.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to The Great Hall of Poets, our regular monthly feature showcasing the talent of Middle-earth fans.
