The refugees are heading where? Could it be the camp that we&#8217;ve seen <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/2014\/06\/22\/90301-hobbit-3-fact-sheet-what-do-we-actually-know-about-the-hobbit-the-battle-of-the-five-armies\/#legobard\" target=\"_blank\">in this photo<\/a>? <\/p>\n<p>Also, there&#8217;s a similarity in feel to the Rohirrim refugee train that we see in the Jackson film for The Two Towers. They were attacked in transit to Helm&#8217;s Deep. What could it be? An approaching army? But if so, which one?<\/p>\n<p>They are outside the mountain. In fact, the ruined structure above Bilbo&#8217;s right shoulder could be part of the outskirts of Dale. Does the Company take refuge there, waiting to see what happens? I think they&#8217;re mirkwood elves. The snow on the ground offers a natural conclusion that this is near Erebor, rather than at Dol Guldur.<\/p>\n<p>The question is, what are they staring up at? An army of bats, orcs and wargs? Dain and his posse of boar-riding dwarves?<\/p>\n<p>If it&#8217;s the latter, it <i>might<\/i> be that Gandalf is intervening to prevent a terrible and inadvertent conflict, per the novel. Atop an outcrop of stone, Azog urges them onward toward their destination &#8212; presumably Erebor. <\/p>\n<p>Again, there&#8217;s a certain resemblance to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.framecaplib.com\/lotrlib\/html\/episodes\/images\/ttt\/ttt1311.htm\" target=\"_blank\">a famous scene in The Two Towers<\/a> where a massive Uruk waves its fellows into battle as they prepare to storm the Deeping Wall of Helm&#8217;s Deep. <\/p>\n<p><b>Bard charges<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www-images.theonering.org\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/bardarmy-1024x425.jpg\" alt=\"bardarmy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"425\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-91755 no-lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/bardarmy-1024x425.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/bardarmy-300x124.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/bardarmy-600x249.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/bardarmy.jpg 1281w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Bard, bearing the sword of Girion, leads Lake-towners into battle at Dale. This is either a skirmish before the large battle, or the beginning of the battle itself. Hard to say, although one would think the battle proper would not occur in such narrow confines.<\/p>\n<p>Others have already pointed out the callback to Aragorn charging with Anduril in a high position over his right shoulder.
