Tolkien at the Battle of the Somme is now on display at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iwm.org.uk\/exhibitions\/iwm-north\/main-exhibition-space\" target=\"_blank\">Imperial War Museum<\/a> in Greater Manchester.<\/p>\n<p>The revolver is part of a several pieces being displayed ahead of a large exhibition that is planned to mark the centenary World War One. The exhibition, called <i>From Street To Trench: A War That Shaped a Region<\/i> opens at the war museum in April.<\/p>\n<p>Tolkien gained a commission as a second lieutenant on his graduation from the University of Oxford in June 1915, and served with The Lancashire Fusiliers in the war. His <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Webley_Revolver\" target=\"_blank\">Webley Mk V<\/a> was the standard British service revolver at the outbreak of the conflict.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www-images.theonering.org\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/tolkien-revolver-300x220.jpg\" alt=\"tolkien revolver\" width=\"300\" height=\"220\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-86607 no-lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/tolkien-revolver-300x220.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/tolkien-revolver-1024x751.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/tolkien-revolver-600x440.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/tolkien-revolver.jpg 1479w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><b>J.R.R. Tolkien&#8217;s Webley service revolver<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The museum&#8217;s director, Graham Boxer, said the weapon would allow visitors to &#8220;connect further with Tolkien&#8217;s magical stories which were born from harrowing wartime experiences&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Between July and November 1916, there were more than 1 million casualties in The Battle of The Somme. Tolkien (and his battalion) arrived at the front on July 3, 1916. He occupied front line trenches in Beaumont-Hamel, Serre and the Leipzig Salient <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johngarth.co.uk\/php\/somme_chronology.php\" target=\"_blank\">and took part in the attack on Ovillers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of October, weighed down by weeks of tension and wretched conditions, Tolkien contracted trench fever and was sent back to hospital in Birmingham.
