A Birthday Present to Professor Tolkien<\/h3>\n

(written from the pov of a hobbit)<\/h4>\n

\nOn the anniversary of your birth,
\nI’d like to thank you for Middle-earth,
\nFor the rivers, plains and mountains of fire,
\nBut most of all \u2013 thanks for The Shire.<\/p>\n

The woods and fields and little streams,
\nThe beech trees talking in their dreams,
\nCosy homes with big round doors,
\nYou made them ours, these tales of yours.<\/p>\n

Thanks for making hobbits like us,
\nQuiet shy folk, who don’t want a fuss,
\nThanks for making us loyal and true,
\nOh and thanks for the ale and pipeweed too.<\/p>\n

For making us lively and full of tricks
\nAnd never taller than three foot six,
\nFor sturdy feet and woolly pates,
\nSecond breakfast and filled up plates.<\/p>\n

You found a place, peaceful and calm,
\nAnd filled it with wonder, magic and charm,
\nAlthough a professor, learned and wise,
\nYou shared the world you saw through your eyes.<\/p>\n

On hobbits’ birthdays, we give things away,
\nAnd it’s clear that you celebrate in the same way.
\nYou gave us a gift more precious than gold,
\nA wonderful dream that will never grow old.<\/p>\n
