{"id":81804,"date":"2013-11-05T17:22:29","date_gmt":"2013-11-05T22:22:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/?p=81804"},"modified":"2013-11-05T17:28:11","modified_gmt":"2013-11-05T22:28:11","slug":"octobers-rewrite-tolkien-contest-winners-are","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/2013\/11\/05\/81804-octobers-rewrite-tolkien-contest-winners-are\/","title":{"rendered":"October&#8217;s Rewrite Tolkien contest winners are&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"intro\">We received a lot of great submissions for October&#8217;s Rewrite Tolkien contest (characters from The Hobbit in the writing style of Edgar Allan Poe), including some impressive international entries from France and Mexico!<\/p>\n<p>This months winner is&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Party, by Alastair Murray of Edinburgh, Scotland<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Alastair&#8217;s poem\u00a0will be read live by TORn&#8217;s own Quickbeam\u00a0on tonight&#8217;s TORn Tuesday;\u00a0 we&#8217;ve also reprinted it below, along with our 2 runners-up.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday we&#8217;ll be posting information on November&#8217;s contest.\u00a0 Hint: you might want to start brushing up on your wizarding terms.<\/p>\n<p>Congratulations to our winners, and thanks to everyone that submitted an entry!<\/p>\n<p>***********<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">WINNING ENTRY: The Party, by Alastair Murray of Edinburgh, Scotland<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Once upon an evening proper, while I readied for my supper,<br \/>\nThinking nothing of old Gandalf who had come this way before<br \/>\nWhile I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,<br \/>\nAs of someone gently rapping, rapping at the Bag-End door<br \/>\n&#8220;&#8216;Tis the wizard!&#8221; now I started, &#8220;tapping at the Bag-End door<br \/>\nI&#8217;d forgotten &#8211; tea at four!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Open here I flung the portal, when, instead of the immortal,<br \/>\nIn there stepped a dwarf &#8211; a stern and rugged countenance he wore;<br \/>\nAfter an obeisance made he, not a minute stopped or stayed he;<br \/>\nBut, with mien of lord or lady, strode in through the Bag-End door.<br \/>\nBarely did I think to mark the kindnesses of ancient lore:<br \/>\n&#8220;At your service!&#8221; &#8220;And at yours!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Barely had I found him seating &#8211; barely had the cakes been eaten &#8211;<br \/>\nWhen again there came a knocking somewhat louder than before.<br \/>\nBack towards the doorway turning, all my soul within me burning,<br \/>\nHere I found my eyes discerning one more dwarf stood at my door<br \/>\nAs the two talked on of distant mountains by the western shore,<br \/>\nTwo more dwarves came to my door.<\/p>\n<p>Presently my soul grew stronger; hesitating then no longer,<br \/>\n&#8220;Dwarves,&#8221; said I, &#8220;good dwarves, truly your forgiveness I implore;<br \/>\nBut the fact is I&#8217;m expecting just one guest, yet I&#8217;m collecting<br \/>\nDwarves; tell me, what is directing you towards my humble door?&#8221;<br \/>\nThen, once more, a knock. Said I, &#8220;Someone again?&#8221; Said they, &#8220;Some four!&#8221;<br \/>\nSo it was. And then one more.<\/p>\n<p>Startled at the quick intrusion, bustling through my apt confusion,<br \/>\n&#8220;Doubtless,&#8221; said I, &#8220;they are here by accident, and nothing more.<br \/>\nWhat am I to offer them? Confusticate, bebother them!<br \/>\nWhy must I now weather them endangering my home&#8217;s decor?&#8221;<br \/>\nOne last knock, and with a temper, here I opened wide the door &#8211;<br \/>\nFour more dwarves fell on my floor.<\/p>\n<p>Right away they got to eating; all my precious cakes, depleting<br \/>\nAnd old Gandalf, standing back from all the dwarves that came before.<br \/>\nThirteen total: Thorin, Dori, Fili, Balin, Oin, Ori,<br \/>\nKili, Dwalin, Gloin, Nori, Bifur, Bofur and Bom-bore<br \/>\nThough they cleaned the dishes well, they had exhausted all my store.<br \/>\nIn the pantry: nothing more.<\/p>\n<p>Then, methought, the air grew denser, perfumed from an unseen censer<br \/>\nDarkness for the business dark was called for, and they laughed no more<br \/>\nGathered round a piece of parchment; at the break of day, they&#8217;d march, when<br \/>\nEvery stone and hall and arch meant for their kin, they&#8217;d claim once more<br \/>\nTo the Lonely Mountain borne, with secret key for secret door.<br \/>\nQuoth the wizard: &#8220;Erebor.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>One by one, the dwarves were singing songs of harps and bells a-ringing<br \/>\nDragon-fire in twisted wire, the wealth of their great halls of yore<br \/>\nFar across the Misty Mountains cold, the dragon Smaug &#8211; confound him! &#8211;<br \/>\nBoldly burned the nearby town, then rampaged through the halls of Thr\u00f3r<br \/>\nDwarves had heard the tramp of doom, and fled their home for evermore;<br \/>\nDarkness fell on Erebor.<\/p>\n<p>Deep into that darkness peering, long I sat there wondering, fearing,<br \/>\nDoubting, dreaming dreams no hobbit ever dared to dream before;<br \/>\nBut the singing then was broken, and the darkness gave no token,<br \/>\nAnd the only words there spoken &#8211; mine, while trembling to the core!<br \/>\n&#8220;Struck by lightning! Struck by lightning!&#8221; as I fell upon my floor &#8211;<br \/>\nDarkness then, and nothing more.<\/p>\n<p>Late that night, the house was sleeping; through my head, the visions seeping &#8211;<br \/>\nRoads that ran beyond the Shire, the paths ahead I would explore<br \/>\nWaking with my house so empty, not until about ten twenty<br \/>\nDid I realise that plenty time had wasted as I snored<br \/>\nWith no time for this, nor that, nor handkerchief, I fled my door<br \/>\nTo the dwarves, and Erebor.<\/p>\n<p>And the roadway, never-ending, still is winding, still is bending<br \/>\nStill is running far away from hobbit-hole, from my front door<br \/>\nFrom the door where it began, where I must follow if I can<br \/>\nDown the path and onwards ran the eager feet it lies before.<br \/>\nTo the Lonely Mountain borne, with secret key for secret door.<br \/>\nQuoth the hobbit: &#8220;Erebor!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Runner Up: The Raven, by Alaryn Estel<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Once after a night of fear, rose the morning grey yet clear,<br \/>\nUpon the horizon, birds were gathering by the score,<br \/>\nWhile I watched, with wary eyes, crows encircling the skies,<br \/>\nYet the autumn sure belies, &#8217;tis too late for wandering more,<br \/>\n&#8220;Lo!&#8221; I remarked, &#8220;Something strange is happening out the door!\u201d<br \/>\nIs it then, a sign of war?<\/p>\n<p>Ah, the terror I recall, when Smaug smashed the mountain hall,<br \/>\nAnd blistering flames seared the edges of the door,<br \/>\nThen I doubted all our quest, perhaps to not have come was best,<br \/>\nYet &#8217;twas\u00a0mine by right, the rest, the gold &#8211; the gold of Erebor,<br \/>\nMemories of bright and golden days in sweet Erebor,<br \/>\n&#8216;Til flee we must, out of the door.<\/p>\n<p>And the delving, ever deeper, in the deep majestic caverns,<br \/>\nFinding, seeking places we&#8217;d not ever dug before,<br \/>\nTo this day, my heart is thrilling, at the sight of treasures filling,<br \/>\nEvery hall and corner spilling, from the ceiling to the floor,<br \/>\nGems and riches overflowing, scattered over all the floor,<br \/>\nBut now silence, so unlike before.<\/p>\n<p>Long we stood on doorstep waiting, thinking long, hesitating,<br \/>\nDoubting Durin&#8217;s Day would fall like it&#8217;s ever done before,<br \/>\nBut the stones would tell us naught, and every day was fraught<br \/>\nWith fear of dragon fire, caught upon the step of the back door,<br \/>\n&#8216;Til their came a steady rapping, a tap-tapping just outside the door.<br \/>\nLo! A Thrush did perch upon the floor.<\/p>\n<p>Once again this bird came winging, but we scarce did heed its singing,<br \/>\nEven though it tried to warn us more loudly than before.<br \/>\nSurely he must bring a message, but I cannot guess what it is,<br \/>\nWould that his visage were a Raven from the days of yore,<br \/>\nThen perhaps we could understand his message more,<br \/>\nLike his fathers in the days before.<\/p>\n<p>Soon there came a fluttering, a giant bird came muttering,<br \/>\nSlowly flapping its ancient way across the valley floor.<br \/>\nI wonder what tidings he is bringing with his unseemly singing,<br \/>\nThen he croaked while winging, &#8220;Smaug is dead! Dead forevermore!&#8221;<br \/>\nAi! All our fears are sundered, settled finally, our old score,<br \/>\nOur treasure plundered never more!<\/p>\n<p>Yet the bird kept on talking, a long relentless squawking,<br \/>\nBidding me to yield our riches to so many score.<br \/>\nNay, I will not hear this madness! It would bring much sadness<br \/>\nOn my name and family, sadness upon those that went before,<br \/>\nTo no one will I give my treasure, naught will pass from out my door,<br \/>\nNot now or ever more.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, curs\u00e9d bird, bring my message to all who would take passage,<br \/>\nTrying swift to reach the Lonely Mountain&#8217;s floor.<br \/>\n&#8220;Back now, back now, to the Mountain!&#8221; There is aught that we can count on,<br \/>\nBut to lay a doubt on those who would soon steal our store,<br \/>\nThey shall not breach these halls, dear halls of Erebor,<br \/>\nOur spite they&#8217;ll get and nothing more!<\/p>\n<p>Hard we toiled in our labor, against our foes, no friendly neighbor,<br \/>\nSwift we quarried rock to block up our front door,<br \/>\nThen a night came cold and weary, when all our eyes were bleary,<br \/>\nMany torches nearing, flaming in the south upon the valley floor,<br \/>\nThen they came without to treaty, like beggars at the door,<br \/>\nSilence will I give them, nothing more.<\/p>\n<p>Again they come and try to treat, yet no demands will I deign meet,<br \/>\nThese halls I own, I am The King Under the Mountain Erebor!<br \/>\nThis is all my treasure, and my one prize is without measure,<br \/>\nGet thee gone! &#8216;Tis my pleasure to have you gone from my door.<br \/>\nThen I seized a bow and let an arrow fly to settle any score.<br \/>\nTrouble me no more!<\/p>\n<p>Oh, foul and miserable thieves! In his grave, my Father grieves!<br \/>\nA vengeance and a curse I cast forever upon your door.<br \/>\nThe Arkenstone is only mine, only I may see it shine,<br \/>\nCurses upon thine, now and forever more!<br \/>\nBurglar, get thee gone, depart now and return no more<br \/>\nTo these halls of Erebor!<\/p>\n<p>Soon darkness swirled up on the wind to pay them for their sin,<br \/>\nBut fooled was I, for that was not at all what it held in store,<br \/>\nDread came up on goblin feet, wolves and wargs in battle greet,<br \/>\nA dreadful clash of armies meet, all over mount and valley floor.<br \/>\nWhen the tide could not be staid, then I leapt from out my door,<br \/>\n&#8220;To me! To me!&#8221; For Erebor!<\/p>\n<p>But the terror of the battle, did our spirits sorely rattle,<br \/>\nThe onslaught took its toll, \u2018til we were bathed in blood and gore,<br \/>\nThe enemy came surging, driving through our ranks and purging<br \/>\nAll our hopes of scourging the vile beasts from without our door,<br \/>\nAnd my kin and I were drowning in the ghastly tide of war,<br \/>\nUntil we could see no more\u2026<\/p>\n<p>The Raven, in his wisdom, had the right of true freedom,<br \/>\nWould that I had listened when he sat upon my door,<br \/>\nYet in my eyes was shining, all the hoarded gold and silver lining<br \/>\nThe great halls and vast depths shining, oh, splendid Erebor!<br \/>\nMy soul now goes to the halls of my Fathers who came before,<br \/>\nFarewell to my home forevermore!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Runner Up: The Sacking of Erebor by Vanity Moreau, Salt Lake City, Utah, U.S.A<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Twas first a wind<br \/>\nA clatter from the barren Northern skies<br \/>\nThat rattled, shook and seared the face<br \/>\nWith prying, soul less eyes<br \/>\nThat fed upon all fear<br \/>\nTeeth gnashing-<br \/>\nSoul by soul until<br \/>\nThe senses finally lied<br \/>\nIn such an alpine cold<br \/>\nDid surely this rotten wind belong,<br \/>\nBut when the winds did change<br \/>\nThey found the consequence<br \/>\nOf right and wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Then came the cry<br \/>\nThat split the gusts<br \/>\nWith serpent tongue,<br \/>\nThat shattered hope and tore at minds<br \/>\nFor sanity was wearing<br \/>\nWhen the watchman rang the gong;<br \/>\nThe beast, it screamed a scream<br \/>\nThat sang the songs<br \/>\nOf corpses dancing salsa<br \/>\nUpon the toes<br \/>\nOf right and wrong.<\/p>\n<p>It cried of hunger, treasure, blood<br \/>\nOf conquerers who, shattered, fell<br \/>\nTheir gems and jewels flying<br \/>\nOver hill and under dell,<br \/>\n\u2018Till nought was left of them but ash<br \/>\nThat buried them on sight, and there they dwell<br \/>\nBefore its eyes and teeth and smell<br \/>\nAnd grinding, wordless song<br \/>\nThat rolls like tumbleweeds and holly leaves along<br \/>\nThe bloodstained shores<br \/>\nOf right and wrong.<\/p>\n<p>A beast of lore that did not settle<br \/>\nAny more for stringy cattle<br \/>\nHunkered down for far too long,<br \/>\nDid finally rise, and far it flew<br \/>\nTo halls of peace and armies strong<br \/>\nWhere fire pranced like stags<br \/>\nAmong the cursed wreckage<br \/>\nOf right and wrong.<\/p>\n<p>He tossed his flame upon the gate<br \/>\nLike feathers gathered from a golden pillowcase;<br \/>\nScarlet scales and silver claws<br \/>\nThat cleaved the flesh from Dwarvish bones<br \/>\nAnd lifted hollow armor -still\u00a0smoking- to his jaws;<br \/>\nHe sniffed, nostrils flaring, air sucking<br \/>\nThrough the dragon tunnels, hollow, long;<br \/>\nThen took a bite, reveled in it,<br \/>\nDeath and fire<br \/>\nThat fell like stars upon the moonless night<br \/>\nOf right and wrong.<\/p>\n<p>In all its glory days,<br \/>\nNever did the ancient citadel<br \/>\nSee such destruction as the day<br \/>\nThe embers of the dragon Smaug did quell<br \/>\nThe forge, the king\u2019s great hall,<br \/>\nAnd the Arkenstone, so small<br \/>\nA thing of such great value ere did fall<br \/>\nFrom the hands of the king<br \/>\nWhen he fled from his hall<br \/>\nFrom the dragon\u2019s breath,<br \/>\nThe smell of death,<br \/>\nAnd twisted metal burning on his left<br \/>\nThat, ringing, brought him with the rest<br \/>\nTo the massive gates where they gathered, bereft<br \/>\nOf home and hearth, and sang a bitter funeral song<br \/>\nBetween the past and lain out path<br \/>\nOf right and wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Footsteps left to rot in the ground<br \/>\nFor travelers coming around<br \/>\nMean nothing but the Dwarves were passing<br \/>\nThrough another blacksmith\u2019s town, run-down<br \/>\nWith swordmakers, swordsman, and swords to wield<br \/>\nThere the Dwarf-king\u2019s heir has found<br \/>\nA heart, a soul, no desire to yield<br \/>\nTo the dragon\u2019s scream that spits and creaks<br \/>\nLike melting armor-<br \/>\nThis is not the age to be weak<br \/>\nYet what will Thorin go to find?<br \/>\nWhat did he leave behind,<br \/>\nIn a city filled of scavengers<br \/>\nThat when one comes too close will squeak<br \/>\nAnd hide before the coming dawn<br \/>\nIn the crumbling age<br \/>\nOf right and wrong?<\/p>\n<p>But march he would, with map and key<br \/>\nAnd fourteen others willing<br \/>\nTo share his fate for blood or grudge,<br \/>\nA brother\u2019s love or lineage,<br \/>\nOr rights to filling<br \/>\nTheir pockets with gold from city forgotten<br \/>\nThat hides beneath a mountain rotten<br \/>\nWith vultures, worms and carrions,<br \/>\nEvery dweller dead save the dragon<br \/>\nWho snores beneath his lonely mountain,<br \/>\nWaiting for the blade of Thorin<br \/>\nTo dare seek his bloodied hide<br \/>\nTo even try,<br \/>\nTo fell the ripping jaws,<br \/>\nThe gleaming claws,<br \/>\nThe voice like heated rock that sears<br \/>\nAnd drags upon the ears;<br \/>\nHe waits and listens here,<br \/>\nAnd then he screams<br \/>\nHis awful dragon song<br \/>\nBut this is not yet the end of Thorin<br \/>\nWho doubtless
