The dwarves tell another tale.\u00a0 They say the Elven king refused to give them their rightful pay.\u00a0 It is sad, Frodo, how old alliances can be broken, how friendships between peoples can be lost.\u00a0 And for what?”<\/p>\n

09:38 \u2013 Hobbiton at night; a party for\u00a0Old Took; Gandalf\u2019s fireworks!\u00a0 We get a couple of Hobbit cameos – \u00a0production designer Dan Hennah\u00a0(as Old Took \u2013 in center of shot), and Katie Jackson (daughter of Peter) to his right. \u201cFar away, in another corner of the world, dragons were only make-believe; a party trick conjured by wizards on Midsummer’s Eve.\u00a0 No more frightening than fairy dust.\u201d A small child is running around Gandalf, attacking him with a play sword and laughing:\u00a0 it\u2019s 4-year old Bilbo Baggins.\u00a0 Bilbo\u2019s mother runs over and grabs him.\u00a0 \u201c And that, my dear Frodo, is where I come in. \u00a0\u00a0It was the beginning of an unlikely friendship that has lasted all my life.\u00a0\u00a0 But it is not the start of my story.\u00a0 It began…well, it began as you might expect.\u00a0 In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

14:00 – Unlike the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the title card for \u201cAn Unexpected Journey\u201d is in the same place as it was in the theatrical version<\/p>\n

17:26 \u2013Bilbo leaves Bag End after Gandalf\u00a0has gone, but is still wary that he\u2019ll run into the wizard.\u00a0 He walks down the hill and into the Hobbiton\u00a0marketplace. \u00a0We see Hobbits talking, selling their wares, and children playing.\u00a0 Bilbo buying a piece of fish for his dinner later that evening.\u00a0 A Hobbit stops Bilbo as he\u2019s leaving the marketplace and shows off a wheelbarrow full of very large tubers. Bilbo responds, \u201cVery impressive, Mr. Worrywort.\u00a0 Now I don\u2019t suppose you\u2019ve seen a wizard lurking around these parts?\u201d \u201cTall fellow? Long grey beard? Pointy hat?\u201d \u00a0Bilbo sees what appears to be a familiar looking hat moving behind a tent, panics, and starts to run away. \u201cCan\u2019t say I have\u201d, Mr Worrywort responds.\u00a0 Bilbo is relieved when the hat \u00a0turns out to just be a basket of fabric.<\/p>\n

23:15 \u2013 After the dwarves arrive at Bag End, there is some additional footage of the dwarves raiding the pantry, and Bilbo getting more and more annoyed.\u00a0 He attempts to stop Bifur\u00a0from taking a bottle of wine, only for Bifur\u00a0to say something unintelligible to him.\u00a0 Oin\u00a0explains to Bilbo that Bifur\u00a0has \u201can injury\u201d. \u00a0\u201cYou mean the ax in his head.\u201d Bilbo replies sarcastically. \u00a0\u00a0Oin puts his hearing aid to his ear. \u201cDead?\u00a0 No, only between his ears.\u00a0 His legs work fine\u201d.<\/p>\n

1:25:13 – Additional footage of the Company after they\u2019ve escaped the Orcs, and into the secret passageway to Rivendell.\u00a0\u00a0 As they are all walking, Bilbo says, \u201cGandalf, where are we?\u201d \u201cYou can feel it?\u201d Gandalf\u00a0replies.\u00a0 \u201cYes\u201d, says Bilbo, \u201cIt feels like\u2026well, it feels like magic.\u201d\u00a0 Gandalf: \u201cThat\u2019s exactly what it is- a very powerful magic.\u201d<\/p>\n

1:30:29 \u2013 Extended scene at Rivendell as the dwarves are eating (\u201cTry it; just a mouthful!\u201d\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t like green food!\u201d).\u00a0 <\/em>Kili\u00a0is making eyes at a female Elven harp player, gives her a smiling wink, and gets a stern look from Dwalin.<\/p>\n

Kili\u00a0trys\u00a0to play it off:\u00a0 “Can’t say I fancy Elf maids myself.\u00a0 Too thin.\u00a0 They’re all high cheekbones and creamy skin;\u00a0 not enough facial hair for me. Although\u2026”\u00a0 Just then another elf walks by.\u00a0 \u201cThat one there’s\u00a0not bad” Kili\u00a0says.\u00a0 Dwalin\u00a0replies, \u201cThat’s not an elf maid\u201d.\u00a0 The elf in question turns to reveal that he is indeed not an elf maid.<\/p>\n

Kili\u00a0looks a bit shocked, then Dwalin winks at him, and everyone bursts out laughing.<\/p>\n

1:32:48 – After Gandalf\u00a0explains to Elrond\u00a0how they found Glamdring\u00a0and\u00a0Elrond\u00a0inquires why they were on the Great East Road in the first place,\u00a0Elrond\u00a0remarks, \u201c13 dwarves and a Halfling; strange travelling companions, Gandalf. \u201c \u201cThese are the descendants of the House of Durin! They\u2019re noble, decent folk.” Nori picks up what appears to be an ornate salt shaker and discreetly puts it in his coat.\u00a0 \u201cAnd they\u2019re surprisingly cultured.” Bombur\u00a0stuffs his face with food. \u201cThey\u2019ve got a deep love of the arts\u201d.\u00a0 Nori turns to the harp player behind him and says \u201c”Change the tune, why don’t you?? I feel like I\u2019m at a funeral!”\u00a0 \u201cDid someboy die?!\u201d Oin\u00a0exclaims.\u00a0 \u00a0Bofur says \u201cAlright lads, there\u2019s only one thing for it!\u201d,\u00a0 jumps onto a plinth next to the table (the same plinth that Frodo would later place The One Ring on), and starts to sing: \u00a0(note: This is a revised edition of a song that was originally recited by Frodo in The Lord of the Rings(book), while at The Prancing Pony)<\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cThere is an inn, a merry old inn
\nbeneath an old grey hill,
\nAnd there they brew a beer so brown
\nThat the Man in the Moon himself came down
\none night to drink his fill.<\/i><\/p>\n

The ostler has a tipsy cat
\nthat plays a five-stringed fiddle;
\nAnd up and down he saws his bow
\nNow squeaking high, now purring low,
\nnow sawing in the middle.<\/i><\/p>\n

So the cat on the fiddle played hey-diddle-diddle,
\na jig that would wake the dead:
\nHe squeaked and sawed and quickened the tune,
\nWhile the landlord shook the Man in the Moon:
\n\u2018It\u2019s after three!\u2019 he said.<\/i><\/i><\/p>\n

The other elves join in, and also start throwing food around.\u00a0 Something comes very close to hitting Lindir!<\/p>\n

1: 1:39:03 – After the scene on Weathertop\u00a0with Azog:\u00a0Additional footage in Rivendell\u00a0(daytime);\u00a0Bilbo is wandering\u00a0around the Last Homely House, and approaches the statue holding the shards of Narsil.<\/p>\n

He only glances at it, before turning toward the painting on the wall – Isildur as he is about to cut the One Ring from Sauron\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n

Bilbo\u2019s eye goes directly to the One Ring on Sauron\u2019s finger.\u00a0 We then see Bilbo outside, walking and gazing at the beauty of Rivendell.\u00a0 \u00a0As Bilbo is standing on a balcony, Elrond\u00a0approaches him.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot with your companions?\u201d Elrond\u00a0remarks.\u00a0 \u201cAh, I shan’t\u00a0be missed\u201d, Bilbo replies.\u00a0 \u201cThe truth is most of them don\u2019t think I should be on this journey.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cIndeed\u201d\u00a0 Elrond\u00a0says \u201cI\u2019ve heard that Hobbits are very resilient.\u201d\u00a0 Bilbo laughs, and then realizes that Elrond\u00a0isn\u2019t joking.\u00a0 \u201cReally?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cMmm.\u00a0 I\u2019ve also heard they\u2019re fond of the comforts of home.\u201d\u00a0 Bilbo thinks about that for a moment and then confides to Elrond, \u201cAnd i\u2019ve heard that it\u2019s unwise to seek the counsel of elves, for they will answer both yes and no.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 At first, Elrond does not seem amused by this, but then a soft smile appears on this face, and Bilbo has an uneasy laugh.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u201cYou are very welcome to stay here, if that is your wish.”\u00a0 Bilbo appears to consider it.<\/p>\n

The scene then cuts to Lindir\u00a0and Elrond\u00a0walking, and (speaking in Elvish), Lindir\u00a0tells Elrond:<\/p>\n

And this is why the PG-13 rating details for the Extended Edition were expanded to include \u201cbrief nudity\u201d – yes, those are bare dwarf bottoms:<\/p>\n

1:42:07 -Rivendell\u00a0at night, just after Bofur\u00a0throws a sausage at Bombur\u00a0and the table he\u2019s on collapses.\u00a0 The scene cuts away to Bilbo walking alone, and he overhears Gandalf\u00a0and Elrond talking.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course I was going to tell you\u201d, Gandalf\u00a0says, \u201cI was waiting for this very chance.\u00a0 And really, I \u2013 I think you can trust that I know what I am doing.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cDo you?\u201d Elrond replies. \u201cThat dragon has slept for sixty years.\u00a0 What will happen if your plan should fail? If you wake that beast\u2026\u201d\u00a0 Gandalf cuts him off; \u201cBut if we succeed!\u00a0 What if the dwarves take back the mountain, then our defenses in the east will be strengthened.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elrond: “It\u2019s a dangerous move, Gandalf.\u201d<\/p>\n

As Bilbo listens to them, he turns to see that Thorin is standing behind him.<\/p>\n

Gandalf: “It is also dangerous to do nothing!\u00a0 Oh, come \u2013 the throne of Erebor is Thorin\u2019s birthright!\u00a0 What is it you fear?\u201d<\/p>\n

Saruman: “Have you forgotten, a strain of madness runs deep in that family.\u00a0 His grandfather lost his mind.\u00a0 His father succumbed to the same sickness. Can you swear Thorin Oakenshield\u00a0will not also fall? Gandalf, these decisions to not rest with us alone.\u00a0 It is not up to you or me to redraw the map of Middle-earth.\u201d\u00a0 This leads into the theatrical scene where they walk up the steps to the balcony, where they meet Galadrial\u00a0and Saruman.<\/p>\n

1:45:10 \u2013 At the meeting of the White Council, after Saurman\u00a0tells Gandalf \u201cSauron is defeated!\u00a0 He can never regain his full strength”,\u00a0Gandalf replies, \u201cDoes it not worry you that the last of the dwarf rings should simply vanish, along with its bearer?\u00a0 Of the 7 dwarf rings, 4 were consumed by dragons, 2 were taken by Sauron\u00a0before he fell in Mordor.\u00a0 The fate of the last dwarf ring remains unknown.\u00a0\u00a0 The ring that was borne by Thrain.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nSaruman:\u00a0 \u201cWithout the Ring of Power, the 7 are of no value to the enemy!\u00a0 To control the other rings, he needs the One Ring, and that ring was lost long, long ago.\u00a0 It was swept out to see by the waters of the Anduin. \u201c\u00a0\u00a0 The scene then cuts back to Elrond\u00a0reminding Gandalf that Middle-earth has been at peace for many years.<\/p>\n

2:04:24\u00a0\u00a0 – After the dwarves are captured, Bilbo sneaks away but falls down the crevasse, and the dwarves are taken to see the Goblin King.\u00a0 As he sits, music starts, and the Goblin King says “I feel a song coming on!”<\/p>\n

“That\u2019s not a song, it\u2019s an abomination!\u201d cries Balin.<\/p>\n

“Abominations, mutations, deviations…that all you’re gonna find down here”, the Goblin King replies.<\/p>\n

2:06:55 – The goblins start searching the dwarves for weapons, and empty out a large bag of what appears to be Elvish cutlery and candlesticks.\u00a0\u00a0 The Goblin King examines a gold candelabra\u00a0and turns it over:\u00a0 “Made in Rivendell?” he says “Bah – Second Age, couldn’t give it away!” he exclaims, and tosses it aside.<\/p>\n

Nori has a guilty expression on his face as Oin\u00a0turns to look at him.\u00a0 “Just a couple of keepsakes”, Nori explains.\u00a0 “What are you doing in these parts”, the Goblin King asks.\u00a0 “Don’t worry, lads – I’ll\u00a0handle this”, Oin\u00a0offers.\u00a0 “No tricks!”, says the Goblin King, “I want the truth!\u00a0 Warts and all!”\u00a0 “You’re going to have to speak up”, Oin\u00a0says, “Your boys have flattened my trumpet”. “I’ll flatten more than your trumpet!” \u00a0the Goblin King roars, and walks toward Oin.\u00a0 “If it’s more information you’re wanting, i’m\u00a0the one you should speak to!”, Bofur\u00a0offers.\u00a0 The Goblin King pauses.\u00a0 “We were on the road…well, it’s not so much a road as a path…actually, it’s not even that, come to think of it, it’s more like a track.\u00a0 Anyway, the point is we were on this road, like a path, like a track, and then we weren’t!\u00a0 Which is a problem, because we were supposed to be in Dunland last Tuesday.”\u00a0 The dwarves try to add additional information before the Goblin King cuts them off.<\/p>\n

I hope this tides you all over until you can see the Extended Edition for yourselves, not to mention the nearly 9 hours of extras!\u00a0\u00a0 I myself am\u00a0looking forward to the day when I can watch all\u00a0three Hobbit Extended Editions, followed by The Lord of the Rings Trilogy EE’s.<\/p>\n
