Last Tuesday, Peter Jackson and Warner Bros. finally released the second official trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.<\/p>\n

If you need to refresh your memory … who are we kidding? … you’ve memorised it all! But if you’d like to see it again, check it out on Youtube<\/a> or on TheHobbit.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In the intervening time, staff here at TheOneRing.net have watched the trailer again and again… and again… We\u2019ve also been poring over large screencaps, with a magnifying glass, to spot any tiny details which just might give us some further insight into what we will see when the movie is finally released in cinemas in a little more than 60 days’ time.<\/p>\n

\nAltaira<\/strong> – This snippet of dialog between Bilbo and Smaug is right out of the book! It’s encouraging to see the film-makers include some key dialogue from the book such as this, Riddles in the Dark and the ‘good morning’ conversation between Gandalf and Bilbo. Hopefully we have more of this to look forward to. Fans are already speculating as to whether Bilbo is wearing the Ring in this scene and that the ‘wraith world’ effect might be added at a later date.
\nImladrisRose<\/strong> – OMFG he’s in Erebor!
\nElessar<\/strong> – About time we get a second trailer
\nEntmaiden<\/strong> – Wow. He looks like Sam Gamgee. What movie is this?
\nGramma<\/strong> – I love the feeling of moving into the chamber with Bilbo. I don’t always need a full-faced image to get into the mood of an event. And this is very effective!
\ngreendragon<\/strong> – How come Bilbo’s going in the front door? What happened to the secret, narrow tunnel?
\nKelvarhin<\/strong> – Love the framing of this first shot, the glimpse we get of the interior of Erebor.
\nMithril<\/strong> – Bilbo entering into the Mountain\/Smaug’s Lair
\nMrCere<\/strong> – Bilbo has a beautiful blue coat on here; new wardrobe. He clearly is entering a dwarf dwelling so I am guessing Erebor.<\/p>\n

\nImladrisRose<\/strong> – Stunning, looks like a labyrinth. My husband asks “What’s with the bathrobe?”
\nElessar<\/strong> – God, Erebor looks so cool. Bilbo has the same look I’d have on my face.
\nEntmaiden – <\/strong>Oh, it’s Bilbo. Why is he wearing a dressing robe? Must be clothes from the Lake-town folks. It looks both too small and too large at the same time. It must have come from a child. Bilbo would be quite short next to the Men from Lake-town. He seems to be in Erebor, so I’m guessing he’s sneaking in to see if Smaug is around.
\nGarfeimao<\/strong> – First off, I’ve always loved the Green look of Erebor, probably because malachite is one of my favorite stones for jewelry. Secondly, the Dwarven geometry of design is stunning, this warren of stairs and halls and passages looks vaguely like Jareth’s castle in Labyrinth, which was more or less based on Escher’s work.
\nGramma<\/strong> – This reminds me so much of when the Fellowship first entered the great realm of Dwarrowdelf; but this is more surreal because it’s so empty. The last time we were here, there were dwarves everywhere!
\nKelvarhin<\/strong> – The detail in this image is amazing, and the look of awe on Bilbo’s face. Is this his first sight of Smaug? Or just that huge pile of gold?
\nMrCere<\/strong> – Interesting how green everything is. I think the design team wanted to make this distinct from Moria. In my mind Moria is the highest peak of Dwarven architecture but since this movie comes later, this will likely surpass it visually.
\nSarumann<\/strong> – Bilbo looks so frightened and alone here!
\nSaystine<\/strong> – Look at the grandeur of Erebor. It is stunning.<\/p>\n

\nImladrisRose<\/strong> – I spy Bilbo! In this shot though, because it’s so dark, the piles of gold kinda looks like manure.
\nElessar<\/strong> – That’s a lot of gold. Can I get a loan?
\nEntmaiden<\/strong> – Ooooh, treasure!
\nGarfeimao<\/strong> – the absolute scale of this treasure room is astounding. We’ve always pictured a mound of gold and gems for Smaug to lay upon, but this is a Sea of treasure, one which Smaug practically swims in. No wonder Bilbo’s in such awe of the size of the chamber, the sheer breadth and scope of the treasure and the immensity that is Smaug, but there is also fear there in his shaking voice.
\nGramma<\/strong> – I can barely make out Bilbo in the center of the picture on a mountain of treasure. Wow!
\nKelvarhin<\/strong> – Bilbo running across the mountain of gold, can’t really make too much else out of it though, just too dark.
\nMrCere<\/strong> – Several places in the world have green marble quarries but none known have piles of gold in them.<\/p>\n

\nImladrisRose<\/strong> – I like how he is backlit and how you can see the varying light from the gold reflected on his face, almost like water.
\nDemosthenes<\/strong> – The line ought to be “Truly songs and tales fall utterly short of the reality, O Smaug the Chiefest and Greatest of Calamities…”. Tiny things like this are why a significant portion of Tolkien fandom rolls their eyes at the Jackson adaptations. If it ain’t broke, why fix it?
\nGramma<\/strong> – He’s so brave… and so alone. Fabulous!
\nKelvarhin<\/strong> – Riddling with Smaug, it sounded brilliant. Really glad they included some of it.
\nMrCere<\/strong> – Really beautiful lighting. A dark place with highlights on treasure and character. Well done Andrew Lesnie.
\nSarumann<\/strong> – I had always imagined this scene the way it was done in the cartoon, with Bilbo being very exaggerated. I like Freeman’s delivery that is full of genuine fear and awe much more.<\/p>\n

\nImladrisRose<\/strong> – I love the scale of this, Elves towering of the Dwarves. I also love the fall like color tones.
\nDemosthenes<\/strong> – This is a different bridge than the one we saw in the end scene of the original Scroll last year. It’s still fairly plain, yet feels more refined. I wonder if they’ve taken the opportunity to remodel their initial concepts.
\nEntmaiden<\/strong> – Beautiful, and very reminiscent of the Fellowship.
\nGarfeimao<\/strong> – The Woodland Realm is lovely, this would be a great vacation spot, if it weren’t for the fact the Dwarves are prisoners. This is the type of treatment they expected in Rivendell.
\nGramma<\/strong> – YES! I never get tired of a line of walkers on a Quest! Little did they know they’d meet that river up close and personal!
\nKelvarhin<\/strong> – That’s a beautiful shot, the play of light and dark, really like it.
\nMithril<\/strong> – Crossing into Thranduil’s Halls. We’ve seen inside the Halls several times, and a hint of the prison (there is a pic of Tauriel near the bars of the cell), but I wonder if we’ll get to see Bilbo sneaking around and pilfering food.
\nMrCere<\/strong> – Feels a big CGI for my taste. Also, I wish this existed as a bigature but I know I am old fashioned and living in the past.
\nRud the Spud<\/strong> – Bilbo clearly doesn’t wear the Ring in Smaug’s lair. Whether or not an in-film reason will be given, it’s clearly much easier and more cinematic to have him visible rather than being in “wraith-world” for the whole scene. Plus I would not like to drop the Ring here! You’d never find it again!<\/p>\n

\nImladrisRose<\/strong> – If Lothlorien and Rivendell had a baby…
\nDemosthenes<\/strong> – I’m really not sure the Halls of the Elven-king were supposed to be quite this grand. It’s lucky they’re not doing The Silmarillion as Lee and Howe would find themselves a bit stumped to create Nargothrond or Menegroth on an even grander scale.
\nEntmaiden – <\/strong>That has to be the Halls of the Elves of Mirkwood. Gorgeous. There’s bits of Lothlorien here, but it’s clearly an indoor space.
\nGramma<\/strong> – Sweeeet! What a contrast, yet very similar, to Lothlorien. This cavern is endless!
\nKelvarhin<\/strong> – Thranduil’s Halls with its tree like pillars. Looks like Thranduil and Thorin are standing side by side, but no sign of the other dwarves. Does that mean they do get separated and Thorin arrives first?
\nMrCere<\/strong> – And the frame after I complained about CGI, this magnificent image shows up that would be hard to light and achieve any other way. A throne room for Thranduil that impresses me because it keeps the Elven theme consistent from previous films but also gives us something completely new. Well done Alan Lee, John Howe, concept team and Weta Digital.
\nSaystine<\/strong> – I just love this design. it is such a great concept and so beautifully executed.
\nRud the Spud<\/strong> – This is the bridge into the Mirkwood elves’ realm we got a glimpse of on that long story poster originally released for AUJ.<\/p>\n

\nImladrisRose<\/strong> – He doesn’t look too happy here.
\nGarfeimao<\/strong> – from the first trailer, the moment Thorin announces his Company to the folk in Lake-town
\nGramma – <\/strong>Thorin is, once again, dealing with someone threatening his plans. I love how Bilbo is peeking over Thorin’s shoulder trying very hard to be invisible without the Ring!
\nKelvarhin<\/strong> – King Under The Mountain demanding respect. Dwalin looks like he’s smelt something bad.<\/p>\n

\"Click<\/a><\/center>
\nAltaira<\/strong> – So far, the glimpses we’ve seen of Lee Pace’s Thranduil just keep us wanting more. He seems so calm and collected. I wonder if we’ll ever see him get angry or agitated? I can’t imagine he’d make it through the Battle of Five Armies with that amount of composure!
\nImladrisRose<\/strong> – What an odd time for a nap, Thranduil!
\nElessar<\/strong> – Thranduil looks really cool. I just have grown to love the final design and think he’s going to be a big hit in this movie.
\nGarfeimao<\/strong> – but then we transition to Thranduil promising help, but I just don’t see him offering that to the Dwarves. I think this is much more likely to be near the end of the film after Smaug has burnt Lake-town down and they have sent for help in Mirkwood.
\nKelvarhin<\/strong> – Thranduil… sorry but he sounded like a slippery used-car salesman here.
\nMrCere<\/strong> – Cliff “Quickbeam” Broadway told me years ago during the casting phase of these films that Lee Pace would be magnificent. I didn’t disbelieve him but I felt the jury was still out because of so many factors. He is of course magnificent and his character is one of my favorite aspects of Film 1. His color scheme may be on display here. The red in his crown and the silks behind. I get the feeling he is ancient and just doesn’t care about these young, upstart dwarves and their new quest.
\nSarumann<\/strong> – Do you trust Thranduil? I don’t trust Thranduil.
\nSaystine<\/strong> – Thranduil is going to help? I don’t trust him.<\/p>\n

\nGarfeimao<\/strong> – In the first trailer and from the behind-the-scenes stuff, we know Bard picked up the Dwarves when he was probably expecting barrels, and Dwalin and Thorin don’t trust him. So are these ruins along the River Running out of Mirkwood or along the shores of the Long Lake? They are stone and masonry, not woodwork, so it’s not Lake-town. It’s too early to be Dale, and I don’t see the Dwarves getting as far as Dale and agreeing to head back to Lake-town before returning again.
\nDemosthenes<\/strong> – “The rotting piles of a greater town could still be along the shores when the waters sank in a drought.” I think this might be the inspiration, but not much of a resemblance.
\nImladrisRose<\/strong> – This shot reminds me of Osgiliath!
\nElessar<\/strong> – Where is this? Someplace between Lake-town and Dale I guess.
\nEntmaiden<\/strong> – Bard? Is he in the ruined city of Esgaroth? That would be awesome!
\nGramma<\/strong> – What a neat shot of boats maneuvering through what looks like the devastation of the Dwarves’ road from the Front Gate to Dale(?). Very evocative. I’ve never thought of how the aftermath of Smaug’s destruction would be incorporated into everyday life.
\nKelvarhin<\/strong> – Bard steering the boatload of Dwarves through some ruins. Interested to see how this fits in, is it an indication of Lake-town being in decline?
\nMrCere<\/strong> – Ancient boat ruins? Is this a former version of Laketown or somewhere else?
\nSarumann<\/strong> – Are these the ruins of Dale? Very haunting.
\nSaystine<\/strong> – Are these ruins of Dale or Lake-town? They are very interesting.<\/p>\n

\nImladrisRose<\/strong> – Not a happy dwarf.. Perhaps he doesn’t like boats (they appear to be on a boat)?
\nGramma<\/strong> – It’s strange to see Thorin and Dwalin NOT in armour. They’re in soft (very comfy-looking) clothing.
\nMrCere<\/strong> – More intensely interesting costumes, right? The pair here really looks the part of battle-weary warriors.<\/p>\n

\nImladrisRose<\/strong> – I love how they are shooting Thranduil like Legolas with the “Elven Eye” shot, although they did this on Galadriel too.
\nDemosthenes<\/strong> – What is with the eyebrows of the Elvenking obsession? Weirdoes.
\ngreendragon<\/strong> – I wonder if they used Christmas tree lights to make his eyes sparkle, as they did with Galadriel in LotR?
\nMrCere<\/strong> – I think I won the office pool on how soon the close-up of the eyebrows was coming! It my opinion, those are not stunt brows but actor grown.
\nSarumann<\/strong> – Dem eyebrows!<\/p>\n

\nElessar<\/strong> – They look like they’ve been put through the wringer. Obvious early distrust of Bard and his plans for the group.

\nKelvarhin<\/strong> – Thorin and Dwalin on the boat again. Is it Bard they’re not trusting? I’m guessing it’s just before they arrive in Lake-town, as they’re looking pretty dishevelled, check out Bofur’s hair particularly.

\nGarfeimao<\/strong> – Thorin in what appears to be fresh garb found in the dragon plunder. Love the fur-lined cloak and the heavy cloak pin, and plate armor. Yay.
\nGramma <\/strong> – Thorin’s face really expresses how he must be feeling. Sad memories, going to face a long-delayed demon.
\ng<\/strong>reendragon<\/strong> – What’s Thorin wearing? A gift from the Master of Lake-town perhaps, hoping he will benefit from dwarven treasure?
\nKelvarhin<\/strong> – Thorin starting to look like the King Under The Mountain.
\nMrCere<\/strong> – That Peter Jackson sure knows how to light and shoot a hero. The downside to all these images: we have just the image which is at best half of what happens when we watch a movie trailer. At this point the tension-building music has reached a big swell and has broken into higher drama. We also have the dialog of “King Under The Mountain” to go with this shot, creating a hero moment and reminding the audience who and what Thorin Oakenshield is. Lots more than just the image combining to create a powerful moment.
\nRud the Spud<\/strong> – Is this kingly garb Thorin has found within Smaug’s Layer? Is this going to be his costume for a lot of There and Back Again?
\nSarumann<\/strong> – Absolutely LOVE this shot of Thorin! A true King Under The Mountain!

\nKelvarhin<\/strong> – Walking up the secret stair, I loved this last time around and I still do. Really think it’s clever the way they made it part of the statue. It just seems such a Dwarvish thing to do, to me.<\/p>\n

\nDemosthenes<\/strong> – I thought that the Tauriel material in the first DOS trailer was the strongest, most-interesting part (of an admittedly weak, incoherent trailer). But not this time round. I still can’t work out why I wasn’t taken with the elf bits this time.
\nElessar<\/strong> – Don’t mess with Tauriel. I really like what we’ve seen about this character and think she’s going to be quite popular when the movie is over.
\nGramma<\/strong> – I cannot WAIT to see Tauriel in action! Deadly speed is coming our way!
\ngreendragon<\/strong> – I’m pretty sure what Tauriel has done here is take the orc’s own sword and use it against him.\u00a0 That doesn’t look like an Elvish blade to me…
\nKelvarhin<\/strong> – Tauriel kicking Orcish butt. Really don’t think it would be a good idea to annoy her too much, even if she doesn’t have her knives on her.<\/p>\n

\nSarumann<\/strong> – I don’t care what anybody says, I’m totally on-board with Tauriel. Love the way she kicks ass!

\nMithril<\/strong> – Elves fighting Azog. I wonder how they get involved with him since he’s clearly after Thorin. Could he approach Mirkwood to seek Thorin out? But the location looks like the same one as in the first movie.<\/p>\n

\nElessar<\/strong> – Azog looks cool but I won’t mind seeing him die.
\nKelvarhin<\/strong> – Oh joy… Azog… I know some of the team love him, but personally, I really could’ve done without him. They could have had Bolg tracking them, seeking revenge and kept it closer to the book.
\nMrCere<\/strong> – I bet this guy is going to groan and roar for the camera because that is what bad guys do. Tauriel is talking about just how tall evil can grow it seems. (Pretty tall.)
\nSarumann<\/strong> – Azog: A shot so nice, they used it twice!
\nSaystine<\/strong> – A cheer for Azog! I love him!<\/p>\n

\nAltaira<\/strong> – Tauriel’s character is going to serve as more than ‘feminine energy.’ I believe her character will advance certain story lines that come later in the movies, such as why Legolas left Mirkwood and traveled to Rivendell (aside from letting Elrond’s council know Gollum had escaped their prison) and, perhaps, what motivated Legolas to join the Fellowship of the Ring to help save Middle-earth.
\nImladrisRose<\/strong> – Tauriel seeing Legolas for the first time “Oooooooh”.
\nGarfeimao<\/strong> – Tauriel is seeing the bigger picture, she’s kinda like Faramir in that regard. Legolas is not entirely sure he cares about what’s outside his forest realm. It is around here somewhere that Legolas says “There is no King Under The Mountain and there never will be”, which sounds remarkably like Boromir’s “Gondor has no King, Gondor needs no King” line.
\nKelvarhin<\/strong> – I was very, very sceptical about the addition of Tauriel, but the more I’ve seen of her, the more I’m willing to give her a go. I’m liking what I’ve seen so far.
\nSarumann<\/strong> – Tauriel clearly knows what’s up more than any of the other Elves.<\/p>\n

\nImladrisRose<\/strong> – Legolas “Bitch, please.”
\nKelvarhin<\/strong> – Legolas looks like a pouty teenager here, who’s about to storm off to his room! \ud83d\ude00
\nMrCere<\/strong> – Leggy looks unconvinced and angry. I don’t think he wants to be told about his morals by this young upstart. Is she even a royal? He does seem his father’s son at this point though.<\/p>\n

\nDemosthenes<\/strong> – Azog’s orcs invade Lake-town and the Mirkwood elves (possibly at the behest of Tauriel), follow. This is all part of the wider Sauron-driven storyline that may ultimately tie BOFA back to Dol Guldur.

\nRud the Spud<\/strong> – Thranduil must have given Orcrist to Legolas after confiscating it from Thorin. A kingly gift for a royal son.<\/p>\n

\nElessar<\/strong> – Legolas fighting an Orc in Lake-town with Orcrist. Does he go there to give Thorin his sword back? Pretty nice guy if so.

I don’t think it’s sequential, otherwise it really doesn’t make sense. Bilbo is fighting the spiders after Legolas is fighting an Orc in what seems to be Lake-town. Tolkien’s wraith lore was plenty potent already. On the other hand, we know the acting will be top-notch.

Such moments – great script, brilliant actors – really are the gems of these films to me, even with all the amazing scenery and effects. And they remind us that PJ really is an actor’s director, as well as being\u00a0a visual wizard.

Hmmm, interesting they would have a weapon designed for defending against an aerial attack. So is this in Dale, or along the ramparts of Erebor?

\nMrCere<\/strong> – Good job here by Calisuri to get the best possible images off the trailer. It shows us the very organic, natural, fire-breathing flame starting in his throat with a bit of a pilot light before bursting forth to an enormous wall of flame. This sequence is pretty outstanding and sells us a dragon without showing much dragon at all. Oh yeah, the voice! Love the voice. Benedict is fantastic (here and elsewhere) but I was worried Smaug would sound too human. I like very much that this doesn’t sound like a man, despite speaking English. This sequence gets resounding applause from me. It also feels like a white-knuckle sequence that brings the threat of Smaug and the smallness of Bilbo directly to the audience. In may ways, this is a lot like Gollum’s cave in the first film; that was pitch perfect for me.<\/p>\n
