There wasn\u2019t a glim!<br \/>\nOh, never had Bilbo seen forest so dim.<br \/>\nThe dwarves all were grumbly with rumbling tums,<br \/>\nFor most of their food was now chowed down to crumbs.<\/p>\n<p>The hobbit was famished with ravenous fam<br \/>\nTheir poultry was paltry, they\u2019d finished the ham.<br \/>\nThey tried shooting squirrels as black as coal tar<br \/>\nBut which tasted the same, and one doesn\u2019t go far.<br \/>\nThose thirteen-plus-one had no lunch, not the least \u2013<br \/>\nWhen suddenly &#8211; wondrously! \u2013 there lay a feast!<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A shizzling of torches blazed out of the wood<br \/>\nWhich moments ago had been black, and a good<br \/>\nSmell of cooking, and singing! came winging this way,<br \/>\nAnd \u201cWe\u2019ll have some of that!\u201d Bilbo heard Thorin say.<br \/>\nYou go!\u201d said the dwarf, \u201cFor of you they won\u2019t be<br \/>\nQuite so scared.\u201d (Although Bilbo thought, \u201cWhat about me?\u201d)<br \/>\nSo the hobbit crept into the glade to say \u201cPlease\u201d,<br \/>\nBut the second his hairy foot trod through the trees<br \/>\nIn one puffulous puff every lantern went snuff!<br \/>\nHere was darker than There, and There was dark enough<br \/>\nOf revelers merry was left not a hint,<br \/>\nNot a glint of their fires, not an After Eight mint.<\/p>\n<p>And Bilbo lay dizzified, mazed in a dream<br \/>\nOf scrumptible hot cakes and roasted ice cream<br \/>\nA sumptuous banquet his friends could not share<br \/>\nTill, waking, he cried out in fear, \u201cAre you there?\u201d<br \/>\nTo find the dwarves gone was one ghastly surprise<br \/>\nNot so bad as the next one: a red pair of eyes!<br \/>\nBut two eyes were lonely, so here gleamed two others<br \/>\nRight over a third pair, as close as six brothers.<br \/>\n\u201cInsect eyes!\u201d Bilbo cried as he jumped up to flee<br \/>\n(For he was no wiz at entomology)<\/p>\n<p>Then flat on his face he fell, fuddled with dread<br \/>\nIn a mesh and a muddle of thick spider thread.<br \/>\nIn no time at all he\u2019d be wrapped up with cord<br \/>\nBut Bilbo, thank goodness, remembered his sword,<br \/>\nThat short elvish pen-knife of just the right size-<br \/>\nOut it swished with a swash, and he slashed at those eyes.<br \/>\nWell, if ever you\u2019ve poked out a spider\u2019s six peepers,<br \/>\nYou\u2019ll know they don\u2019t like it; it gives them the jeepers<br \/>\n(It\u2019s on their hate-list after plugholes and slippers).<br \/>\nThis giant arachnid, attacked in mid-meal,<br \/>\nWent bonkers berserk, till a fresh flash of steel<br \/>\nQuite abolished its abdomen, thorax or head \u2013<br \/>\nAnatomy schmatomy, that thing was dead.<\/p>\n<p>The hobbit stood shaking, alone in the night,<br \/>\nChalk white from his bug-eyed long-leggedy fright<br \/>\nAnd wishing, I\u2019m sure, for more friends, light, or height.<br \/>\nBut he wiped on the grass the beast-blood from his blade<br \/>\nAnd slowly began to feel not so afraid.<br \/>\nBilbo gazed at his sword in the gloom glistening \u2013<br \/>\n\u201cI will give you a name,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ll call you Sting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>**************<\/p>\n<p><strong>Runner Up &#8211; Smaug\/Bilbo Seussified by Rachel VanderWoude (Calgary, Alberta Canada)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" id=\"docs-internal-guid-5bf93371-770f-85d2-2862-69d911ea10f6\">The dragon Smaug looked fast asleep.<br \/>\nHe snored and snuffled breathing deep.<br \/>\nBut Bilbo crept a stealthy creep:<br \/>\nFor Smaug\u2019s red eye was not asleep \u2013<br \/>\nNo sir! It opened just a peep.<br \/>\n\u201cI must not make a sound!\u201d he thought.<br \/>\n\u201cFor that would really get me caught!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But even as he thunk this think<br \/>\nHe heard a clunk.<br \/>\nAnd then a clink.<\/p>\n<p>He turned in fright,<br \/>\nAnd saw a sight!<br \/>\nA horrid, awful, scary sight!<br \/>\nSmaug was not dead, not dead by half.<br \/>\nHe sniffed a sniff<br \/>\nThen laughed a laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI smell a thief!<br \/>\nI smell a rat!<br \/>\nA sneaky, theivy<br \/>\nRat at that!<br \/>\nI smell your smell<br \/>\nUpon the air.<br \/>\nI can\u2019t see you<br \/>\nBut you are there.<br \/>\nCome help yourself,<br \/>\nThere\u2019s gold to spare!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Bilbo knew it was a ruse.<br \/>\n\u201cTremendous Smaug, I must refuse.<br \/>\nThe one wonderful thing that I came here to see<br \/>\nWas if you\u2019re as great as they said you would be!<br \/>\nI\u2019ve heard of your grandness, O master of fires,<br \/>\nAnd I\u2019m quite glad to say that my friends are not liars!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAh, is that so?\u201d the worm replied.<br \/>\n(And sounded rather satisfied.)<br \/>\n\u201cGood manners for a thieving pest<br \/>\nBut I must ask a small request:<br \/>\nYou seem to know my name quite well,<br \/>\nBut I cannot quite place your smell.<br \/>\nWhere are you from, and what\u2019s your name?<br \/>\nBe quick, or you shall feel my flame!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnder hill is where I\u2019m from,<br \/>\nAnd over other hills I\u2019ve come.<br \/>\nOver ground and through the air,<br \/>\nAnd walked unseen most everywhere!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis may be true<br \/>\nBut all the same,\u201d<br \/>\nThe dragon said,<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s not your name.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cA Web-cutter.<br \/>\nA Fly stinger.<br \/>\nA chosen lucky<br \/>\nNumber-inger.<br \/>\nA bag I\u2019m from,<br \/>\nA bag I be,<br \/>\nBut no bag<br \/>\nDid go over me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLovely names,\u201d the dragon sneered.<br \/>\n\u201cThe oddest that I ever heared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bilbo was proud,<br \/>\nHe was proud of his wit,<br \/>\nAnd was no longer frightened\u2014<br \/>\nNot one little bit!<br \/>\n\u201cI have more names, O Smaug!<br \/>\nI am many more things.<br \/>\nI am Friend of the bears,<br \/>\nAnd of birds with great wings.<br \/>\nI am Wearer of luck,<br \/>\nAnd companion of kings,<br \/>\nI am Rider of barrels<br \/>\nAnd winner of rings!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now dragons always like to guess<br \/>\nAt riddles and at cleverness.<br \/>\n(I don\u2019t know why this thing is so.<br \/>\nYou want to know? Go ask your bro!)<br \/>\nBut Bilbo knew just what to say<br \/>\nTo hide his name and make Smaug play.<\/p>\n<p>Smaug was quite smart and he well understood<br \/>\nThat most of the names would do him little good.<br \/>\nBut one thing he took from the thief\u2019s witty words:<br \/>\nIn Esgaroth, barrels were common as birds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t been there for an age and an age,<br \/>\nI haven\u2019t been there since I grew old and sage.<br \/>\nBut that will soon change\u201d,<br \/>\nThought the worm in a rage,<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019ll burn them to bits like they\u2019re mice in a cage!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas Barrel your pony? Then he tasted quite good.<br \/>\nSo did the five others, just like ponies should.<br \/>\nPony, you know, is a marvellous treat.<br \/>\nYou boil it up nicely and chop off the feet<br \/>\nAnd barbeque crisply the rest of the meat,<br \/>\nThen chew it up nicely: it\u2019s crunchy and sweet!<br \/>\n(Making it right is a difficult feat<br \/>\nBut if you can do it, it\u2019s scrumptious to eat!)<br \/>\nThose nags were quite good, so I\u2019ll make you a deal.<br \/>\nI\u2019ll tell you a thing in return for the meal.<br \/>\nYou may walk unseen, but you don\u2019t walk alone!<br \/>\nAnd Dwarves are worse friends than a stick or a stone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDwarves!?\u201d cried poor Bilbo, pretending surprise,<br \/>\nWith his heart in his stomach and fear in his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, I know the smell, and the taste of nice Dwarfs,<br \/>\nI know when I\u2019ve eaten a Dwarf-ridden horse.<br \/>\nI could smell Dwarf in the thickest of fog,<br \/>\nDon\u2019t insult me, Ring-winner, for I am Great Smaug!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now Bilbo was brave,<br \/>\nBut he was in a cave&#8230;<br \/>\n(And you\u2019d be scared too,<br \/>\nIf he switched spots with you.)<\/p>\n<p>He thought to himself,<br \/>\n\u201cYou will get yourself stewed!<br \/>\nIf you keep going on<br \/>\nIn this sort of a mood!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope you know, Smaug, it was not only gold<br \/>\nWhich brought us from out of the world to your hold\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAha! So it\u2019s true!\u201d<br \/>\nSaid the dragon with glee.<br \/>\n\u201cYou admit to the us!<br \/>\nYou admit to the we!\u201d<br \/>\nWhy don\u2019t you say fourteen, I quite know it\u2019s true!<br \/>\nWhy else would you have fourteen ponies with you?<br \/>\nI expect you feel clever, and sure of reward<br \/>\nFor finding them things like that cup from my hoard.<br \/>\nDid they tip you for that?<br \/>\nDid they take it away,<br \/>\nAnd tell you they\u2019d pay you<br \/>\nOn some other day?<br \/>\nAnd if they do pay you, what then, goodness me!<br \/>\nDid they offer to help you take back your whole fee?<br \/>\nWhy think of the cartings! The haulings! The rollings!<br \/>\nThink of the guards, and of paying the tollings!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Poor Bilbo was speechless! He hadn\u2019t at all<br \/>\nGiven thought to the riches that he\u2019d have to haul.<br \/>\nBut from small Hobbit heart to his feet, soft and furry,<br \/>\nHe meant to stay true to his friends, and not worry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m rather afraid that you\u2019re all in a mix<br \/>\nAbout who\u2019s kidding who, and who\u2019s playing the tricks.<br \/>\nSurely, O Smaug, unassesably wealthy,<br \/>\nYou must know that hate can get rather unhealthy.<br \/>\nWe journeyed o\u2019er hill, not for gold and lozenge;<br \/>\nOh no! Our main mission, you see, was REVENGE.<\/p>\n<p>Then Smaug laughed a laugh that was dreadfully loud.<br \/>\nBilbo fell to his feet and quite terrified, bowed!<br \/>\n(Forgetting of course, that he couldn\u2019t be seen,<br \/>\nOr else I don\u2019t really know where he\u2019d have been!)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRevenge?\u201d said the dragon.<br \/>\n\u201cRevenge,\u201d he did smirk.<br \/>\n\u201cKing under the mountain is dead, that\u2019s my work.<br \/>\nI ate up his kin like a wolf among sheep!<br \/>\nI gobbled the women before they could weep!<br \/>\nMy claws are like spearheads, my armour like shields,<br \/>\nMy wings beat a hurricane, flattening fields.<br \/>\nMy breath is like death, it is fiery hot:<br \/>\nRevenge? I have never heard such utter rot!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve heard,\u201d squeaked our hero, \u201cThat dragons are dressed<br \/>\nIn the finest of waistcoats: all but the \u2013 er \u2013 chest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve heard rather wrongly,\u201d said Smaug, anger-filled.<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019m armoured all over: I cannot be killed!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do wish you\u2019d show me,\u201d the Hobbit sighed sadly.<br \/>\n\u201cFor really, I do want to see your hide badly!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The dragon rolled over and crowed, \u201cNo indeed!<br \/>\nThere isn\u2019t a sword that could make this worm bleed!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStaggering! Marvelous!<br \/>\nDazzling! Flawless!<br \/>\nThere\u2019s no thing on this earth<br \/>\nThat could render you pawless!<br \/>\nBut inside he was scornful, and thought, \u201cYou old fool!\u201d<br \/>\nThere\u2019s a spot on your belly without any jewel!<br \/>\nThat\u2019s a mighty fine place for an arrow to stick!\u201d<br \/>\nThen he thought about how to get out of there, quick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSmaug the magnificent, I am afraid<br \/>\nThat I\u2019ve talked long enough and am quite overstayed!<br \/>\nI hope you have fun catching ponies tonight,<br \/>\nFor you won\u2019t catch this burglar!\u201d<br \/>\nAnd with that he took flight.<\/p>\n<p>But as Smaug\u2019s angry fire came flaming behind him,<br \/>\nHis common sense finally really did find him.<br \/>\n\u201cBilbo, you foolish and silly old Baggins!<br \/>\nI\u2019ll just tell you once: never laugh at live dragons!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>**************<\/p>\n<p><strong>Runner Up &#8211; What the Bee Saw by Arlothia (Washington State)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Bumble Bee looked up<br \/>\nFrom his garden of pollen<br \/>\nTo see a grey hat\u2014<br \/>\nA wizard come a-callin\u2019!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s this?\u201d asked the Bee<br \/>\nTo himself as he flew,<br \/>\nBut he soon saw the grey hat\u2019s<br \/>\nCompanion\u2014there were two!<\/p>\n<p>He was a short little man<br \/>\nWith fuzzy wuzzy toes.<br \/>\nA Hobbit he was<br \/>\nAnd his name was Bilbo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho are you?\u201d asked Beorn<br \/>\n\u201cAnd what do you want?\u201d<br \/>\nSo the wizard sat down<br \/>\nAnd told of their jaunt.<\/p>\n<p>And oh what a tale!<br \/>\nWhat adventure! What danger!<br \/>\nBut just at the good part<br \/>\nThere came a cliff-hanger.<\/p>\n<p>The wizard gave a whistle<br \/>\nAnd the Bee looked around<br \/>\nTo see two colored hoods<br \/>\nApproach at the sound.<\/p>\n<p>They were Dwarves the Bee saw<br \/>\nAs they came in a queue.<br \/>\nOne hooded in purple,<br \/>\nThe first in sky blue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m Thorin! And Dori!\u201d<br \/>\nThey said as they bowed.<br \/>\nAnd Beorn, quite grumpy,<br \/>\nSaid \u201cMy! What a crowd!<\/p>\n<p>I do not like guests,<br \/>\nNo I don\u2019t! No siree!<br \/>\nYou, wizard, have brought me<br \/>\nNot one, two, but three!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Please let me continue!\u201d<br \/>\nSaid Gandalf the Grey.<br \/>\n\u201cOnce you hear all our tale<br \/>\nYou will want us to stay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen go on with the telling!\u201d<br \/>\nSaid Beorn, quite gruff.<br \/>\nThe Bee settled down.<br \/>\nThis was really good stuff!<\/p>\n<p>But their story of mountains<br \/>\nAnd Goblins and chases<br \/>\nWas stopped once again<br \/>\nWhen appeared two new faces!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe come at your service,\u201d<br \/>\nSaid Nori and Ori.<br \/>\n\u201cSit down,\u201d said the Bear-Man,<br \/>\n\u201cLet\u2019s get on with the story!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new purple and grey hoods<br \/>\nDid not waste time stallin\u2019.<br \/>\nBut just at that moment<br \/>\nCame Balin and Dwalin.<\/p>\n<p>In proper Dwarf fashion<br \/>\nRed and green hoods were doffed<br \/>\nBut they didn\u2019t get far<br \/>\nBefore their wagging was stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJack-in-the-boxes!<br \/>\nThat\u2019s what you are, see?<br \/>\nPopping up on my doorstep<br \/>\nAnd disturbing my bees.<\/p>\n<p>Do you have any more?<br \/>\nWill there come one more pair?<br \/>\nTwo more Dwarves somewhere out there<br \/>\nTo tangle in my hair?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And just at that moment,<br \/>\nAs I\u2019m sure you have guessed,<br \/>\nCame Fili and Kili,<br \/>\nRunning after the rest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSit down and be quiet<br \/>\nYou matching blue hoods.<br \/>\nNo \u2018Hellos\u2019 or bowing<br \/>\nIs that understood?<\/p>\n<p>Now go on with your tale,<br \/>\nYou wizard of grey,<br \/>\nDespite your bad manners<br \/>\nI\u2019ll hear what you way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So Gandalf continued<br \/>\nBut the Bee then looked down.<br \/>\nUp came Oin and Gloin,<br \/>\nA white hood behind brown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell now you\u2019re a dozen.<br \/>\nI hope there\u2019s no more.<br \/>\nHousing this party<br \/>\nHas become quite a chore.<\/p>\n<p>Hurry up! Hurry up now!<br \/>\nYour tale is not done.<br \/>\nThere were Wargs and blue fire!<br \/>\nNow what is to come?<\/p>\n<p>But the story must wait<br \/>\nFor the Bee had just seen<br \/>\nBouncing hoods of bright yellow<br \/>\nThen, puffing, pale green.<\/p>\n<p>Bifur and Bofur<br \/>\nAnd Bombur at last!<br \/>\nAnd now with these three<br \/>\nWe have filled out our cast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s it!\u201d said the Bear-Man.<br \/>\n\u201cThat does it I say!<br \/>\nFifteen is rather<br \/>\nToo much for one day!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet me finish!\u201d cried Gandalf.<br \/>\n\u201cRight quick! On the double!<br \/>\nLet me finish! I\u2019ll tell you<br \/>\nHow we got out of trouble.<\/p>\n<p>The Eagles swooped in\u2014<br \/>\nOn their backs we went flying.<br \/>\nTheir timing was perfect<br \/>\nOr else we\u2019d be frying.<\/p>\n<p>To the Carrock they flew us,<br \/>\nRight up to the top.<br \/>\nThen we walked our way here<br \/>\nAnd right here we have stopped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy, my! What a story!<br \/>\nQuite a good one I\u2019d say.<br \/>\nBut the day is now ending.<br \/>\nYou\u2019d all better stay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then they all went inside,<br \/>\nThe Bee watched them all go:<br \/>\nThe grey-hatted wizard<br \/>\nThen the Hobbit, Bilbo.<\/p>\n<p>They paraded inside,<br \/>\nFirst the blue hoods, then white.<br \/>\nThen brown, grey, and purples.<br \/>\nWatch them go!
