(November 1, 2012 \u2013 Los Angeles, CA) \u2013 WaterTower Music has announced the release of The\u00a0Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Original Motion Picture Soundtrack at all retailers on December\u00a011th. \u00a0The soundtrack will be available both digitally and as a 2 CD set. \u00a0A Special Edition of the\u00a0soundtrack featuring six exclusive bonus tracks, seven extended score cues, and deluxe liner\u00a0notes will also be available December 11. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey features original\u00a0score by Academy Award\u00ae winner Howard Shore recorded at famed Abbey Road studios by\u00a0the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Additionally it includes an original song entitled \u201cSong of\u00a0the Lonely Mountain,\u201d written and performed by Neil Finn (Crowded House). \u00a0The Hobbit: An\u00a0Unexpected Journey, the first of a trilogy of films from Oscar-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson\u00a0(The Lord of the Rings Trilogy), will be released in the U.S. on December 14, 2012.<\/p>\n

Shore\u2019s music for The Lord of the Rings Trilogy has been performed in concerts throughout the\u00a0world. \u00a0In 2003, Shore conducted the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in the\u00a0world premiere of The Lord of the Rings Symphony in Wellington, New Zealand. \u00a0Since then,\u00a0the work has had over 140 performances by the world\u2019s most prestigious orchestras, and has\u00a0even been the subject of a book, Music of The Lord of the Rings Films.<\/p>\n

A production of New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures (MGM), The Hobbit: An\u00a0Unexpected Journey is the first of three films from filmmaker Peter Jackson, the Academy\u00a0Award-winning director of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. \u00a0The screenplay for The Hobbit: An\u00a0Unexpected Journey is by Fran Walsh & Philippa Boyens & Peter Jackson & Guillermo del Toro.\u00a0\u00a0Jackson is also producing the film, together with Carolynne Cunningham, Zane Weiner and\u00a0Fran Walsh. \u00a0The executive producers are Alan Horn, Toby Emmerich, Ken Kamins and\u00a0Carolyn Blackwood, with Boyens and Eileen Moran serving as co-producers.<\/p>\n

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and the second and third films of the trilogy are\u00a0productions of New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, with New Line managing\u00a0production. \u00a0Warner Bros. Pictures is handling worldwide theatrical distribution, with select\u00a0international territories as well as all international television distribution being handled by MGM.
