That is the Dwarf Question.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-41238 no-lazyload\" title=\"'Hot Dwarf' Armitage\" src=\"http:\/\/www-images.theonering.org\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/gimli-armitage3-238x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"167\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/gimli-armitage3-238x300.jpg 238w, https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/gimli-armitage3.jpg 409w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 167px) 100vw, 167px\" \/><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">While essentially a joke &#8212; one which spread like wildfire \u2013 a real concern for some fans prior to casting \u201cThe Hobbit\u201d was whether or not a film featuring a supporting cast of 13 short hairy men would be interesting to studios and audiences unless those short hairy men were transformed into attractive short-statured hunks, the likes of which would send diehards into fits of horror.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The question was, would the filmmakers be forced to go that route, and also \u2013 did we want them to? Should there be Hot Dwarves? <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(From here on t<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">his will contain minor spoilers, so those of you who wish to remain \u201cpure,\u201d turn back now.)<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">++++++++++<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-66617 no-lazyload\" title=\"Richard Armitage as Lucas North in 'Spooks' (BBC)\" src=\"http:\/\/www-images.theonering.org\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/richard_armitage-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/richard_armitage-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/richard_armitage-200x200.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/richard_armitage-75x75.jpg 75w, https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/richard_armitage.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>With the casting of Richard Armitage as Thorin, the leader of the dwarves, we couldn&#8217;t help but admit that we were conflicted. Supremely talented actor. But could he look dwarflike? Did he have to? Wait, yes, he has to. But should he? Head said yes, hormones said no. Shut up hormones. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As the other actors were added, fans&#8217; questions grew. And as stills of costumed dwarves began rolling out, the discussions raged on in fandom \u2013 Were the dwarves too cute? Too bad-assed? Too dwarvish? Not dwarvish enough? Too <em>KLINGON<\/em>? Second guessing gave way to infinity-guessing. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The movie a year or more off, poring over images and studying production diaries provided much fodder for speculators. Beyond Thorin, beyond Aidan Turner&#8217;s Kili and Dean O&#8217;Gorman&#8217;s Fili, the whole company was under intense scrutiny.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">With the exception of Thorin, dwarves aren&#8217;t the leading characters in \u201cThe Hobbit\u201d and yet the film would live or die on them. Too comical and audiences wouldn&#8217;t buy into the story. Too Hollywood-handsome and audiences wouldn&#8217;t buy into the story. Should they fade into the background entirely then it simply wouldn&#8217;t be \u201cThe Hobbit.\u201d Nor if they became Robo-Dwarves-of-Doom, chewing on the scenery.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So, with the \u201cUnexpected Journey\u201d finally here, how did it all turn out?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-66611 no-lazyload\" title=\"Thorin: Rankin Bass vs. Jackon\" src=\"http:\/\/www-images.theonering.org\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/thorin.rankin_jackson.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"506\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/thorin.rankin_jackson.jpg 843w, https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/thorin.rankin_jackson-300x115.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/thorin.rankin_jackson-600x231.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 506px) 100vw, 506px\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Fabulous.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">No, Thorin does not harken back to the droopy-eyed Rankin Bass incarnation, nor does he resemble Tolkien&#8217;s description of a blue-hooded, silver-tasseled grump. But neither is he a Chippen-dwarf. He embodies the essence of the character \u2013 the haughty nobility, the impatience and simmering anger. The sadness. This is not the hot dwarf you were looking for, but so much more.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Voice, body language, costume, prosthetics \u2013 all combine to transform Armitage into the strong, surly Thorin Oakenshield. One dimensional images fade from mind and the focus shifts to the character in action, as it should. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It will be interesting to see where the second and third films take Thorin. At the conclusion of \u201cUnexpected Journey\u201d he has an emotional encounter with Bilbo \u2013 much, much earlier in the action than what occurs in the text. And that exchange adds another layer to a complexity that outweighs looks. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And what about the rest of the company?<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-46029 no-lazyload\" title=\"Bombur, Bifur and Bofur\" src=\"http:\/\/www-images.theonering.org\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/the-hobbit-an-unexpected-journey-20110713111341600-000-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">While \u201cThe Hobbit\u201d on page is essentially a child&#8217;s tale, Peter Jackson hasn&#8217;t filmed a child&#8217;s tale. There is a vein of darkness running <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">through the movie, brought by material added from the appendices and the established \u201cLord of the Rings\u201d visual style.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For the action scenes to be believable \u2013 particularly in the higher frame-rate and in 3D \u2013 the dwarves must be warrior-like, to appear capable of fighting with the agility and intensity required. In the company of these dwarves, Gimli would appear soft. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And yet, the dwarves retain a whimsicality that makes them distinct. Like Thorin, their appearance is an expression of personality. With less time at the forefront, how they look is a large part of how we get to \u201cknow\u201d them. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Balin with his luxurious white beard, the elder of the company. Bofur&#8217;s quirky cap and quick wit. The soft-spoken Ori in his cowled hood. But the things that seemed over the top in stills \u2013 Bifur with the axe-impaled forehead \u2013 aren&#8217;t in your face. Remarkably, at least in \u201cUnexpected Journey,\u201d we&#8217;re spared Bombur sight-gags.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-46003 alignleft no-lazyload\" title=\"Fili and Kili, as played by Dean O'Gorman and Aidan Turner\" src=\"http:\/\/www-images.theonering.org\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/00290065-0000-0000-0000-000000000000_00000065-06d3-0000-0000-000000000000_20110712161810_HBT-DWF-003550-245x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"147\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/00290065-0000-0000-0000-000000000000_00000065-06d3-0000-0000-000000000000_20110712161810_HBT-DWF-003550-245x300.jpg 245w, https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/00290065-0000-0000-0000-000000000000_00000065-06d3-0000-0000-000000000000_20110712161810_HBT-DWF-003550.jpg 550w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 147px) 100vw, 147px\" \/>Which brings us to Kili and Fili. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">No, they do not look like dwarves. Kili even less so than Fili. Even in the company of dwarves, they do not look like dwarves. And yet, they look as if they <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>belong<\/em><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> with the dwarves. And while I&#8217;m pretty sure that might not make sense, I think once people see the film, you&#8217;ll understand what I mean. In the context of their behavior and actions \u2013 they work as dwarves. They fight like dwarves. It helps that Peter has not indulged in long, lingering, soft-focused glamor shots of Aidan Turner or Dean O&#8217;Gorman. Thank you, Peter. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">While looks are possibly one of the more trivial aspects of the film \u2013 seriously, I do recognize the ridiculousness in all of this \u2013 a noticeable amount of effort has been put into crafting each dwarf&#8217;s appearance and then stepping back from focusing on it. It&#8217;s a measure of subtlety we didn&#8217;t expect.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">++++++++++<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-66614 alignright no-lazyload\" title=\"Hot Dwarves button\" src=\"http:\/\/www-images.theonering.org\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/hot_dwarves_button-300x295.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"126\" height=\"124\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/hot_dwarves_button-300x295.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/hot_dwarves_button-75x75.jpg 75w, https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/hot_dwarves_button.jpg 474w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 126px) 100vw, 126px\" \/>In the meantime, the phrase \u201cHot Dwarves\u201d has spread across the globe since my story was first published. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">At San Diego Comic-Con this summer, Carrie Fisher fell for our \u201cI &lt;3 Hot Dwarves\u201d t-shirt. In Wellington, Aidan Turner, who wanted a shirt for his own, was gifted with a \u201cHot Dwarves\u201d button. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The phrase crops up in most stories I&#8217;ve read, is at alluded to in many interviews, raises its head in pop-culture memes and \u2026 well, last week showed up on the red carpet of the world premiere itself. [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3K9Px81sdwQ\" target=\"_blank\">Watch<\/a>]<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"color: #003300;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif; color: #008000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em>How do you feel about being one of the pin-ups in the The Hobbit,\u201d said an interviewer to Richard Armitage.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">\u201d<em>I thought you were going to say <\/em><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em>&#8216;hot dwarf.&#8217;\u201d he graciously responded with some humor.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As I said at TheOneRing.net&#8217;s Comic-Con panel: Thank you, Richard, for being such a good sport.
