There were also several original Tolkien-based paintings by Blok in the exhibition hall, and it was a pleasure to see those \u201cin person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/2012\/10\/23\/63796-an-appeal-for-help-locating-some-cor-blok-paintings\/cor-blok-at-return-of-the-ring-2012-ii\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-63806\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-63806 no-lazyload\" title=\"Cor Blok at Return of the Ring 2012 II\" src=\"http:\/\/www-images.theonering.org\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Cor-Blok-at-Return-of-the-Ring-2012-II.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"230\" height=\"218\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Cor-Blok-at-Return-of-the-Ring-2012-II.jpg 360w, https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Cor-Blok-at-Return-of-the-Ring-2012-II-300x284.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 230px) 100vw, 230px\" \/><\/a>In recent years, Blok has become better known to fans. HarperCollins took the unusual step of publishing two calendars in a row, 2011 and 2012, featuring his work. The release of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Tolkien-Tapestry-Pictures-Accompany-Rings\/dp\/0007437986\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1350836183&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=tolkien+tapestry\" target=\"_blank\"><em>A Tolkien Tapestry<\/em><\/a> in 2011 gave us a nearly complete look at Blok\u2019s paintings.<\/p>\n<p>One intriguing aspect of Blok\u2019s career is that he showed five of his paintings to Tolkien back in the early 1960s, and Tolkien admired them enough to buy two of them (as editor Pieter Collier explains in the foreword to <em>A Tolkien Tapestry<\/em>). These were \u201cThe Battle of the Hornburg\u201d and a version of \u201cThe Dead Marshes.\u201d In writing to Blok and requesting to buy the paintings, Tolkien remarked, \u201cI think it is very kind of you to consider selling any of your pictures. If they were mine I should not be able to bear to part with them whether in need or not.\u201d (This 1962 letter is reproduced on p. 6 of the book.) Blok gave Tolkien a third painting, \u201cDunharrow,\u201d as a present. These are all still in the Tolkien family or with the Estate.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, Tolkien found the paintings appealing specifically as paintings. He wrote to his editor, Rayner Unwin, \u201cI thought them most attractive \u2026 I should very much like to see some more, in the hope that some more will be as good as \u2018The Battle of the Hornburg.\u2019 The other four I thought were attractive as pictures, but bad as illustrations.\u201d (Quoted p. 6 of <em>A Tolkien Tapestry<\/em>.)<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Blok\u2019s paintings are very stylized and distinctive, and one can understand Tolkien\u2019s feeling that they might not make good illustrations for an edition of <em>The Lord of the Rings<\/em>. Indeed, <em>A Tolkien Tapestry<\/em>\u2019s subtitle describes them as <em>Pictures to Accompany the Lord of the Rings<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Some find them unattractive, but I am among those who like them a great deal. For many, I think, Blok has come to rank alongside the best of \u00a0Tolkien-inspired painters, like John Howe, Alan Lee, and Ted Nasmith.<\/p>\n<p>During his talk, Blok mentioned that he had lost track of the whereabouts of some of his paintings. In the early 1990s, Blok loaned a group of them to an exhibition. A dealer then sold them as a lot to a single collector.<\/p>\n<p>After that collector\u2019s death, however, the heirs wanted to dispose of the paintings. Without notifying Blok, between roughly 1994 and 2005, the same dealer sold the collection, this time one or two paintings at a time. He did not keep track of the contact information for the people who purchased them.<\/p>\n<p>Blok is interested in obtaining that information. I should stress that the paintings were sold quite legally, and he is not seeking to re-acquire them. He simply wants to know who has them, in case someone might wish to mount an exhibition of his work. Most of these sales probably involved collectors in the Netherlands and Belgium, though of course the paintings might have been re-sold again and gone to other countries.<\/p>\n<p>Some the paintings were sold without any images of them being kept, and hence they don\u2019t feature in <em>A Tolkien Tapestry<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>It occurred to me that <em>TheOneRing.net<\/em> would be the ideal place to post an appeal for help in tracing the ownership of these paintings. Surely with such a wide readership of enthusiastic fans, many of whom collect Tolkien-related art and know others who do, we could come up with information about at least a few.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a list of the paintings, with the page numbers from <em>A Tolkien Tapestry<\/em> for the ones that appear in the book. Roman numerals refer to paintings of which more than one version was created. The titles in bold type are ones Blok is particularly interested in tracing:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe Game of Riddles\u201d (p. 59)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cGandalf persuades Bilbo to leave the Ring to Frodo\u201d (p. 53)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWeathertop\u201d (p. 76)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Balrog II\u201d (p. 92)<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cFrodo\u2019s Vision on Amon Hen\u201d (pp. 100-101)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cIsengard\u201d<\/strong> (p. 115)<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cGollum\u2019s Promise\u201d (p. 121)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe Forbidden Pool\u201d (p. 128)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe Cross-roads\u201d (p. 129)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSam Attacks Shelob\u201d (p. 132)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Stone of Erech\u201d (p. 135)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Dead Marshes I\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOrodruin\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Again, images of the last two were not kept, so the need to find their owners is particularly acute. Early this year Pieter Collier of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tolkienlibrary.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Tolkien Library<\/em><\/a> listed a large number of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tolkienlibrary.com\/tolkien-book-store\/corblokart.htm\" target=\"_blank\">originals for sale<\/a>, and there are only a few left. That same link, however, will display a list of the new prints. The ones I saw at \u201cReturn of the Ring\u201d were very high in quality and should appeal to those who can\u2019t afford originals or have missed the opportunity to acquire their favorite.
