\"\"On September 19th (or the 20th, depending on your timezone!) Warner Brothers finally released the second official trailer for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey<\/em>. What followed was a world of fans exploding in joy. We here at TheOneRing.net were equally giddy and now, after some time digesting, we offer our first frame-by-frame look at the trailer’s content. Expect more in-depth trailer reviews and analysis here at TORn over the coming days.<\/p>\n

Calisuri: <\/strong>One of the days, we all need to get our butts to Middle-earth…err…New Zealand. Simply breathtaking.<\/p>\n

JW: <\/strong>You can tell in this trailer that they’re making it known that New Zealand is back as Middle-earth, an important selling point, as New Zealand was as much a cast member as any of the people in The Lord of the Rings films, and people will come back to see more of it as MIddle-earth in the Hobbit films. Just imagine how different things would be if those plans to move production away from New Zealand would have happened! We’re so fortunate everything worked out for this project to be done the right way.<\/p>\n

Rumour grows of a shadow in the east, whispers of a nameless fear. In Dol Guldur, an ancient evil lurks?

Elessar: <\/strong>Dol Guldur look as creepy from a distance as I could have imagined it would look.<\/p>\n

Calisuri: <\/strong>Wow – what an amazingly well conceived view of Dol Guldur. Very similar to Weathertop, but much cooler!<\/p>\n

Calisuri: <\/strong>I’m expecting a lot of stockings to be stuffed with map replicas this holiday season! Now if they can get the Moon Letters to work, they’ll make an additional billion dollars!<\/p>\n

JW: <\/strong>I was so excited eleven years ago to see this map in The Lord of the Rings – especially to have Gandalf look at it with such interest. Glad to see it in the trailer, and it will be fun to see it in use in The Hobbit films.<\/p>\n

Magpie: <\/strong>I think Hobbiton looks even more lovely here than in LOTR. I’m enchanted with the network of paths you can see in a couple of shots. It seems to indicate that people visit each other often.<\/p>\n

It’s hard to tell, but there are two gents that look like they are wrestling on the left. It doesn’t last long enough to get a sense of movement in the trailer and they might be greeting each other. There’s a woman walking that looks like she’s carrying a net of some sort. Like a butterfly net. And there’s another person with a long haired white animal. If I had to guess, I’d guess a sheep.<\/p>\n

The houses we can see at the bottom of the hill with one red door and one yellow door (or is this just two doors for one house?)- the yellow door would be the Gamgees, correct? [Image<\/a>]<\/p>\n

And it\u2019s greenish, and is tied more like a cravat than a tie. And of course, the comfy cotton or muslin shirt, there should be lots of quality Bilbo\u2019s by December.<\/p>\n

Garfeimao:<\/strong> \u00a0I can finally make out that Fili\u2019s back sword sheath does only hold one sword, which has had me perplexed, since he\u2019s always shown fighting with two swords. But I believe I\u2019ve solved that riddle. The back scabbard is fairly wide, that was established in one of the Vlogs when Fili was shown running away from the camera. I now believe one sword is sheathed from the top of the scabbard and the other is sheathed from the bottom, and the scabbard hangs at a diagonal, so that he can draw them both at the same time. This should give Fili an uber cool Sword Draw moment a la Legolas with his twin blades. I can also see he\u2019s wearing a brown wool cloak.<\/p>\n

While I don’t believe it’s a make or break thing for the film, I do want to point out that the geography here perfectly matches Tolkien’s description of the geography of Hobbiton and the direction Bilbo sets off in.<\/p>\n

Magpie: <\/strong>This shot made me remember that Dwarves are small like Hobbits. I mean, I know it… but I hadn’t actually thought about them standing next to big folk. Thorin looks odd. Balin and Bilbo look like they would normally but shrunk down. But Thorin’s body proportions look off.<\/p>\n

Calisuri: <\/strong>That is one BIG spider leg coming through the roof. You can see some of the foul beast’s body moving as well above the thatches in the roof. Freaky big…anyone who was scared of Shelob may have a bit of a problem with The Hobbit!<\/p>\n

JW: <\/strong>Isn’t it cruel and unusual punishment to show us all this and then ask us to wait until December 14? All in all, this is an awesome trailer that’s reminiscent of The Fellowship of the Ring theatrical trailer, the gold standard for film promotion and the one that jump started this whole pop culture phenomenon.<\/p>\n

Random thoughts from Staffers:<\/p>\n

Magpie: <\/strong>I was struck by scenes in this that reminded me of LOTR. The party standing on the side of a mountain with the stone trolls throwing things on them similar to Caradhras. The overhead shot of the party running along a narrow bridge similar to Khazad-dum. The big blubbery thing (I’m kind of steering a little clear of spoilers so I haven’t ‘identified’ him yet) falling on the party and pinning them down similar to Gimli getting pinned down by dead wargs. The shot I mentioned earlier of Bilbo cringing by the door when he thinks someone’s there. Gandalf crashing his staff down in a feat of magic and light. I enjoy these threads of similarities.<\/p>\n

Entmaiden: <\/strong>Can I just start out with a general \u201csqueeeee!\u201d I had chills watching the recent trailer. Need to see it a few thousand more times\u2026\u2026.<\/p>\n

Overall, this trailer was mostly true to the books. With all the kerfuffle about expanding the story to three movies and pulling in other Tolkien materials, this trailer seemed to be aimed at book fans. It also seemed to be fairly chronological, which is unusual.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, I had a moment watching the trailer when I understood how movie-firsters could be caught up in this story. The trailer really captures a sense of epic-ness that movie fans want in an adventure story, including fans who won\u2019t know the story but loved LOTR.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
