\"\"The Mythgard Institute will be continuing their look at the life and works of J.R.R. Tolkien \u2013 while delving into new territory \u2013 by offering the course \u201cThe Making of Myth: C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien\u201d this spring.\u00a0 The 15-week course can be taken for master\u2019s level credit or audited and will focus on examining the work of Tolkien and Lewis hand-in-hand.\u00a0 The class will engage in a careful comparison of Lewis\u2019 and Tolkien\u2019s fiction, paying close attention to those moments when they are both exploring similar ideas or undertaking comparable literary enterprises.\u00a0 Not only will the course look at what they shared in common, but will also examine their primary differences.\u00a0 Books and essays to be discussed include but are not limited to\u00a0The Hobbit<\/em>,\u00a0The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe<\/em>, \u201cAinulindale,\u201d\u00a0The Magician\u2019s Nephew<\/em>, \u201cLeaf by Niggle,\u201d\u00a0Till We have Faces<\/em>, \u201cThe Lost Road,\u201d\u00a0The Voyage of the Dawn Treader<\/em>, and \u201cSmith of Wootton Major.\u201d [Spring 2012 Courses<\/a>]<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Making of Myth\u201d will be taught by well-known Tolkien scholar Dr. Corey Olsen, who is also known to Internet audiences as \u201cThe Tolkien Professor\u201d for his hit iTunes podcasts and scholarly website on the subject.\u00a0 He is currently writing a book titled\u00a0Exploring The Hobbit<\/em>, which will be published by Houghton Mifflin in September 2012.\u00a0 Olsen teaches in the English Department at Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland.<\/p>\n

\"\"The second Spring course offered is \u201cTaking Harry Seriously: The Artistry and Meanings of the\u00a0Harry Potter<\/em>\u00a0Saga.\u201c\u00a0\u00a0This is a 15-week M.A. or audited rigorous examination of J.K. Rowling\u2019s works, considering their structural form, thematic coherence, traditional symbolism, genre integrity, and their exploration of both postmodern and archetypal themes.\u00a0 Also discussed will be the cultural phenomenon of the books, and both their unparalleled popularity and the various critical reactions to them.\u00a0 Students can expect the booklist to not only include all 7 of the\u00a0Harry Potter<\/em>\u00a0texts but also\u00a0Beedle the Bard<\/em>\u00a0and Rowling\u2019s \u201cschoolbooks.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTaking Harry Seriously\u201d will be taught by two leaders in the field of Rowling research.\u00a0 Lecturer Amy H. Sturgis will be sharing the lectern with lecturer Travis Prinzi.\u00a0\u00a0Sturgis\u00a0is an author, speaker, and scholar of science fiction\/fantasy studies and Native American studies.\u00a0 Prinzi is the author of three books on\u00a0Harry Potter<\/em>\u00a0and is a regular on the lecture circuit.<\/p>\n

Registration for both courses closes Friday, January 13, 2012.<\/p>\n

The Mythgard Institute in an online institute that offers challenging, engaging classes, taught by world-class teachers and leading scholars in order to provide students with new opportunities to study works by authors like Tolkien and Lewis seriously and with academic rigor, either for their own enrichment or towards the achievement of a degree.\u00a0 The Institute offers literature courses at the master\u2019s level and offers concentrations in areas such as Tolkien studies, medieval literature, and fantasy literature.\u00a0 The Mythgard Institute is in the process of acquiring full certification and accreditation, and expects to be able to award MA\u2019s in English literature by the spring of 2013.<\/p>\n
