When he was the director, Guillermo spoke extensively on how he planned to handle\u00a0Smaug. Some of his most in-depth comments were made right here on TORn:\u00a0\u201cSmaug should not be \u201cthe Dragon in the Hobbit movie\u201d as if it was just \u201canother\u201d creature in a Bestiary. Smaug should be \u201cThe DRAGON\u201d for all movies past and present. The shadow he cast and the greed he comes to embody- the \u201cneed to own\u201d casts its long shadow and creates a thematic \/ dramatic continuity of sorts that articulates the story throughout.\u201d <\/em>It remains to be seen how much of the original, Del Toro influenced Smaug will make it into the movies.<\/p>\n
