Mr. Jackson\u2019s agreement to direct the movies has been in place but hasn\u2019t formally closed because it depends on the studios\u2019 willingness to begin production soon, according to people briefed on his status.<\/p>\n<p>The first \u201cHobbit\u201d film is expected to be released in mid-December 2012, the second a year later.
