Intelligence chiefs singled him and a &#8216;cadre&#8217; of other intellectuals to work at Bletchley Park, the codebreaking centre in Buckinghamshire. Its staff &#8211; which included Alan Turing, the gay codebreaker &#8211; would later decipher the &#8216;impenetrable&#8217; Enigma machines.
