Click on the link below to transported in time!<br \/>\n<!--more--><span style=\"color: blue;\"><strong>August 17 to August 23<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: green;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">1947<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: purple;\"><strong>August 20<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 Famed British fantasy artist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0496769\/\" target=\"_blank\">Alan Lee<\/a>, who also worked as a conceptual designer on Peter Jackson\u2019s <em>LOTR<\/em>, is born on this day.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: green;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">1948<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: purple;\"><strong>August 20<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 Australian actor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0633604\/\" target=\"_blank\">John Noble<\/a>, who played <em>Denethor<\/em> in Peter Jackson\u2019s <em>LOTR<\/em> movie trilogy, is born on this day.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: green;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">1953<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: purple;\"><strong>August 17<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 In a follow-up letter (#140) to a visit by Rayner Unwin to Sandfield Road, Tolkien offers some new suggestions for titles for all three <em>LOTR<\/em> books\u2026<\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\" width=\"100%\"><!--quote--><\/p>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"2%\">\n<hr size=\"1\" \/><\/td>\n<td width=\"6%\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: xx-small; font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica;\">Quote<\/span><\/td>\n<td width=\"92%\">\n<hr size=\"1\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<div style=\"margin-left: 30px\">The Fellowship of the Ring will do, I think; and fits well with the fact that the last chapter of the Volume is The Breaking of the Fellowship.  The Two Towers gets as near as possible to finding a title to cover the widely divergent Books 3 and 4; and can be left ambiguous \u2013 it might refer to Isengard and Barad-d\u00fbr, or to Minas Tirith and B; or Isengard and Cirith Ungol.  On reflection I prefer for Vol. III The War of the Ring, since it gets in the Ring again; and also is more non-committal, and gives less hint about the turn of the story : the chapter titles have been chosen also to give away as little as possible in advance.  But I am not set in my choice.<\/div>\n<table border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\" width=\"100%\"><!--\/quote--><\/p>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<hr size=\"1\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><span style=\"color: purple;\"><strong>August 19<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 Rayner Unwin replies to Tolkien\u2019s letter, agreeing with his choice of book titles for <em>LOTR<\/em>, except for the third one, which he prefers to be titled \u201cThe Return of the King\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: green;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">1957<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: purple;\"><strong>August 21<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 Canadian fantasy artist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0397849\/\" target=\"_blank\">John Howe<\/a>, who also worked as a conceptual designer on Peter Jackson\u2019s <em>LOTR<\/em>, is born on this day.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: green;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">1966<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: purple;\"><strong>August 19<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 In a letter to Tolkien regarding an upcoming visit, Rayner Unwin mentions Tolkien\u2019s latest physical challenge, namely a muscular spasm for which his doctor has prescribed a cervical collar, which Rayner hopes \u201cis not proving too burdensome\u201d (HarperCollins archive).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: green;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">1968<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: purple;\"><strong>August 21<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 After having a forced hiatus from writing imposed upon him due to his recent leg injury, Tolkien expresses his anxiousness in a letter to Stanley Unwin:  \u201cI am beginning to feel that the forcible damming up of the stream may soon release a good head of water to set the wheels turning again \u2013 as soon as I have anywhere to write in peace.\u201d (HarperCollins archives)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: green;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">1999<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: purple;\"><strong>August 19<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 Scoop gets the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/1999\/08\/19\/22147-liv-tyler\/\" target=\"_blank\">rumor mill<\/a> going with the possibility of Liv Tyler being considered for a role in <em>LOTR<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: purple;\"><strong>August 20<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 In the latest entry of his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mckellen.com\/cinema\/lotr\/990820.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Grey Book<\/a>, Sir Ian McKellen reveals what motivates him to take the parts he does, his thoughts on taking on the role of Gandalf in a venture that will take him away from his London home for one year and his faith in Peter Jackson\u2019s ability to bring the <em>LOTR<\/em> to life on the big screen.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: purple;\"><strong>August 21<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 Michael Deluca <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/1999\/08\/21\/22145-more-on-liv\/\" target=\"_blank\">denies<\/a> rumors that Liv Tyler has been cast in <em>LOTR<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: purple;\"><strong>August 22<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 A rather dubious <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/1999\/08\/23\/23398-simon-tolkien-ben-afleck\/\" target=\"_blank\">spy report<\/a> \u201creveals\u201d that Simon Tolkien, the estranged son of Christopher, is in talks with Peter Jackson and New Line for a role in the <em>LOTR<\/em> trilogy.
