1936<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

August 10<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 In a letter to his son, Christopher, Tolkien announces that \u201cThe Hobbit<\/em> is now nearly finished, and the publishers clamouring for it.\u201d<\/p>\n

1937<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

August 10<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 C.A. Furth relays to Tolkien that Houghton Mifflin thinks his Hobbit<\/em> dust-jacket design has a \u201cBritish look\u201d and that the drawings Tolkien sent as mere examples of his work were assumed to be illustrations that he wished to be used in The Hobbit<\/em>.<\/p>\n

August 13<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 Tolkien gives his permission for Allen & Unwin to use his drawings as they wish, and suggests that, when they are returned from America, the publisher should \u2018keep them in \u201ccold storage\u201d\u2019 (HarperCollins archive)<\/span> .<\/p>\n

1944<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

August 12<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 Tolkien laments to Christopher that he is \u201cabsolutely dry of any inspiration for the Ring and am back where I was in the Spring, with all the inertia to overcome again. What a relief it would be to get it done.\u201d (Letter #78)<\/p>\n

1953<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

August 11<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 Philip Unwin informs Tolkien that he is investigating the matter of a dramatization of The Hobbit<\/em> having been broadcast on Canadian radio without Tolkien\u2019s knowledge or consent.<\/p>\n

1968<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

c. August 9-10<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 Tolkien, who is staying at the Hotel Miramar, tries to obtain outpatient treatment for his leg at a Bournemouth hospital so as not to leave Edith alone at home.<\/p>\n

August 12<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 Tolkien shows his frustration at his incapacitation in a letter to Joy Hill (collection of Ren\u00e9 van Rossenberg)<\/span>\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

August 9<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 As per Michael Deluca<\/a>, Kate Winslet has \u201cpassed on the project due to the length of time it takes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2022 NZ OnFilm<\/a> has a list<\/a> of new crew members to add to the production team, which includes Ngila Dickson, Jamie Selkirk, Rick Porras and Andrew Lesnie.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Sentencing for the theft of LOTR<\/em> footage is handed down<\/a>, with the defendant being given 12 months supervision and psychological counseling.<\/p>\n

August 11<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 Principal photography of the LOTR<\/em> trilogy hits the 10-month mark.<\/p>\n
