He is commemorated in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.birmingham.gov.uk\/GenerateContent?CONTENT_ITEM_ID=830&amp;CONTENT_ITEM_TYPE=0&amp;MENU_ID=2\" target=\"_blank\">Hall of Memory<\/a> built by his father, Sir John Barnsley, outside Baskerville House in Birmingham.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; color: #000000;\"><strong>1937<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<strong>July 28<\/strong> \u2013 Tolkien visits the London office of Allen &amp; Unwin. The Gaffer came first; and Gamgee followed as an echo of old Lamorna jokes.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-size: xx-small; color: #000000;\">(It was at Lamorna Cove in Cornwall, while on holiday in 1932, that Tolkien amused his children in giving the nickname \u201cGaffer Gamgee\u201d to a local \u201ccharacter\u201d, \u201can old man who used to go about swapping gossip and weather-wisdom and such like\u201d (Letter #257).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; color: #000000;\"><strong>1947<\/strong><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>July 31<\/strong> \u2013 In response to a letter from Stanley Unwin, Tolkien mentions Rayner\u2019s report on Book I of <em>LOTR<\/em>, specifically that the younger Unwin has discovered a weakness in the connection between <em>LOTR<\/em> and the original version of <em>The Hobbit<\/em>, namely Gollum\u2019s offering of the One Ring to Bilbo as a gift.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Letter #109:<\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\" width=\"100%\"><!--quote--><\/p>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"2%\">\n<hr size=\"1\" noshade=\"noshade\" \/><\/td>\n<td width=\"6%\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: xx-small; font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica;\">Quote<\/span><\/td>\n<td width=\"92%\">\n<hr size=\"1\" noshade=\"noshade\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<div style=\"margin-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But I don\u2019t feel worried by the discovery that the ring was more serious than appeared [\u2026] However, Gollum later becomes a prime character, and I do not rely on Gandalf to make his psychology intelligible. The results of the tests were negative, which came as a big relief for the couple, who think it may have been a virus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>July 31<\/strong> \u2013 In a letter to Christopher (#311), Tolkien, now back at work after his health scare, admits to feeling \u201ca bit desperate: endlessly frustrated. [\u2026] Business \u2013 endless \u2013 lies neglected, yet I cannot get anything of my real work finished. Then came this last stroke of malice. I was assailed by very considerable pain, and depression, which no ordinary remedy would relieve. [\u2026] I feel quite well: i.e. as well as I did before the outset. But life is not easy. The Parke <\/span><span style=\"font-size: xx-small; color: #000000;\">(the domestic help)<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> has gone sick.  Mummy is ailing, and I fear slowly \u2018declining\u2019.
