This week&#8217;s subject was soft mutation and lenition.<\/p>\n<p>*** Log file opened: 3\/12\/2003 6:54:18 PM<\/p>\n<p>[Elostrion] Let&#8217;s begin.<br \/>[jincey] please remember HOF rules<br \/>[jincey] try to limit your nick changes and joins\/parts<br \/>[Elostrion] We&#8217;re not going to moderate tonight, so please remain quiet until the end.<br \/>[jincey] no bugging barli<br \/>[jincey] he has to pay attn to log<br \/>[jincey] poor guy<br \/>[Elostrion] I will take questions following the lesson.<br \/>[jincey] lets start : )<br \/>[Elostrion] Tonight we will be covering Soft Mutation!<br \/>[Elostrion] Let me first clarify what this means.<br \/>[Elostrion] The Consonant Mutation are an occurance Tolkien added in an attempt to maintain the fluidity of the language.<br \/>[Elostrion] These are designed to take away all the harsh sounds.<br \/>[Elostrion] You will begin to recognize patterns.<br \/>[Elostrion] Tonight you will need two materials.<br \/>[Elostrion] You will find both of these here:<br \/>[Elostrion] http:\/\/www.theonering.net\/barlimans\/elvish<br \/>[Elostrion] Sindarin Consonant Mutation<br \/>[Elostrion] Consonant Mutation Chart<br \/>[Elostrion] These are both available for download as well.<br \/>[Elostrion] The nature of Soft Mutation (Lenition):<br \/>[Elostrion] Lenition is carried out on the first consonant in the word following certain prepositions, etc.<br \/>[Elostrion] Sindarin Consonant Mutations lists the words\/particles that Lenition follows.<br \/>[Elostrion] Consonant Mutation Chart explains what happens to the beginning consonant.<br \/>[Elostrion] Let&#8217;s do an example.<br \/>[Elostrion] &#8220;Dark wood&#8221;<br \/>[Elostrion] If you will remember from Lesson 1, adjectives follow their nouns.<br \/>[Elostrion] &#8220;Wood dark&#8221;<br \/>[Elostrion] Sindarin Consonant Mutation says that adjectives immediately following their nouns are lenited.<br \/>[Elostrion] &#8220;Wood&#8221; = &#8220;Eryn&#8221;<br \/>[Elostrion] &#8220;dark&#8221; = &#8220;doll&#8221;<br \/>[Elostrion] We must lenit  &#8220;dark&#8221;.<br \/>[Elostrion] So we have:<br \/>[Elostrion] &#8220;Eryn dholl&#8221;<br \/>[Elostrion] Let&#8217;s do another.<br \/>[Elostrion] &#8220;The elf&#8221;<br \/>[Elostrion] If you will remember from Lesson 2, a singular &#8220;the&#8221; is &#8220;i&#8221;.<br \/>[Elostrion] &#8220;I edhel&#8221;<br \/>[Elostrion] Because there is no consonant following the &#8220;i&#8221;, we do not need to lenit anything.<br \/>[Elostrion] Summing up&#8230;<br \/>[Elostrion] Lenition is caused by certain words.<br \/>[Elostrion] These words cause lenition on the first consonant of the following word.<br \/>[Elostrion] Adjectives are lenited.<br \/>[Elostrion] (Immediately following their nouns)<br \/>[Elostrion] Nouns that are objects of verbs are lenited.<br \/>[Elostrion] Before I take questions there is one more thing we must cover.<br \/>[Elostrion] The second elements of compouns is lenited as well.<br \/>[Elostrion] Here is an example:<br \/>[Elostrion] &#8220;Starlight&#8221;<br \/>[Elostrion] &#8220;Star&#8221; = &#8220;el&#8221;<br \/>[Elostrion] &#8220;light&#8221; = &#8220;calad&#8221;<br \/>[Elostrion] &#8220;Starlight&#8221; = &#8220;Elgalad&#8221;<br \/>[Elostrion] There you have it.<br \/>[Elostrion] I am ready to take questions.  Please, take turns.<br \/>[Elostrion] Are there any?<br \/>coca_coola] how do you know which consonant to leniate with<br \/>[Elostrion] Consonant Mutation chart tells you how you carry out lenition.<br \/>[Elostrion] You can find it here:<br \/>[coca_coola] like in starlight you used g but withdark wood you did h<br \/>[Elostrion] http:\/\/www.theonering.net\/barlimans\/elvish<br \/>[coca_coola] I have the chart but it is complicated ;-s<br \/>[Elostrion] Ok&#8230;<br \/>[Not_Maedhros] Elostrion, what is the difference between &#8220;el&#8221; and &#8220;gil&#8221;?<br \/>[Elostrion] You simply find the consonant that needs to be lenited, and carry out the action the chart says.<br \/>[Elostrion] They are derived from different Old Sindarin roots.<br \/>[Not_Maedhros] Hmm?<br \/>[Eowyn] why is there an &#8216;i&#8217; in front of the letters on the charts?<br \/>[Elostrion] &ntilde;gile<br \/>[Elostrion] and<br \/>[Elostrion] That &#8220;i&#8221; is an example of the most common occurance of lenition, following the Sindarin article &#8220;i&#8221;.<br \/>[Eowyn] oh ok<br \/>[Elostrion] &#8220;elen&#8221; Not_Maedhros<br \/>[coca_coola] so lenition is a way to make the words flow more smoothly right?<br \/>[Elostrion] Exactly coca_coola<br \/>[coca_coola] so will someone understand you if you don&#8217;t use lenition or is it necessary<br \/>[Eowyn] could you give an example of mutation with an object of a verb?<br \/>[Not_Maedhros] Elostrion, what exactly is the difference between the two?
