Animation unveils its long-awaited <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.annecyfestival.com\/en\/the-festival\/official-selection\/competition\/2024\/seances-evenements\/the-lord-the-rings-the-war-the\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">second look<\/a><\/em> at Kenji Kamiyama\u2019s The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim at the 2024 Annecy Film Festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 90-minute presentation, hosted by Andy Serkis (Hunt for Gollum tie-in, anyone?), will feature the first 20 minutes (or so) of Kamiyama\u2019s 130-minute-long feature anime. People with good memories will recognise how this mirrors their appearance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/2023\/06\/12\/116612-annecy-film-festival-reports-the-war-of-the-rohirrim-anime-will-be-130-minutes-long\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">at the same event this time last year<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"602\" height=\"484\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-118664 no-lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/image.png 602w, https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/image-300x241.png 300w, https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/image-199x160.png 199w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 602px) 100vw, 602px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Source: War of the Rohirrim Producer Jason DeMarco<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>It will be interesting to hear if they show it all in single sequence, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/2023\/06\/13\/116656-the-first-in-depth-with-spoilers-look-at-lotr-the-war-of-the-rohirrim\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">as a series of snapshots as they did last year<\/a>. It will also be very interesting to hear about the progress the animation team has made on the raw, rather-unfinished footage that they screened last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Annecy presentation will also finally bring some support to the lonely promotional furrow that composer Stephen Gallagher has been ploughing this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On our <a href=\"https:\/\/discord.gg\/theonering\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Discord channel dedicated to all things WOTR<\/a>, we\u2019ve been closely following the trail of hints he\u2019s been leaving on his Instagram account but I\u2019ve long thought his efforts deserve a wider audience. So I\u2019m going to take a thousand words or so to update you all on what\u2019s been happening on the musical front!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gallagher, in case you\u2019re unaware, is a New Zealand composer and award-winning music editor. He is probably best-known to Tolkien fans for his work on The Hobbit where, as well as working as music editor on all three films, he composed the songs \u2018Blunt the Knives\u2019 and \u2018The Torture Song\u2019 for An Unexpected Journey. M03 Business\u201d with a simple caption \u201cTime for business\u2026\u201d, showing parts for at least Cor Anglais (otherwise known as English Horn), bass clarinet, (probably bass) bassoon and crumhorn. Additional, unknown, instruments are obviously further down.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"424\" height=\"206\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/image-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-118667 no-lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/image-1.png 424w, https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/image-1-300x146.png 300w, https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/image-1-255x124.png 255w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 424px) 100vw, 424px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Despite the absence of a key signature, TORn Discord moderator Lasswen promptly placed the score snippet into notation program Musescore4 to gauge what it might sound like, working on the assumption that it was scored in concert pitch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019d like to emphasise that this is our <strong><em>approximation<\/em><\/strong> based on the score provided with the notation inputted into a program to recreate the sheet music we could see, then exported as an mp3 \u2014 it\u2019s not the *<em><strong>actual<\/strong><\/em>* thing. You can have a listen below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">2. M03 BUSINESS<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/WOTR_2_M03_Business.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Lasswen notes that<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2026 aside from what other instruments are in that piece, let alone missing from that sample (eg. there&#8217;s two bars after the contra bassoon that we don&#8217;t know if it&#8217;s silence or something else lower on the score is filling in), I think it&#8217;s also interesting to note that typically if piccolo, flute, oboe or trumpets were in it they would have been in that section we saw.&nbsp; Most of what&#8217;s there are low bass instruments.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We like the creepy, unsettled sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, that might indicate a monster theme since both Executive Producer Philippa Boyens and Producer DeMarco have mentioned we should expect monsters \u2014 that there are things lurking in the White Mountains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But there are other possibilities \u2014 particularly if, as we suspect, the numbers indicate that \u201cBusiness\u201d is a piece that arrives early in the film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initial, fatal conflict that arises between Helm and Freca is underpinned by an enormous amount of unease. Further, Freca, is there on his own business \u2014 the business of marriage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8216;To one of these councils Freca rode with many men, and he asked the hand of Helm&#8217;s daughter for his son Wulf. But Helm said: &#8220;You have grown big since you were last here; but it is mostly fat, I guess&#8221;; and men laughed at that, for Freca was wide in the belt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8216;Then Freca fell in a rage and reviled the king, and said this at the last: &#8220;Old kings that refuse a proffered staff may fall on their knees.&#8221; Helm answered: &#8220;Come! The marriage of your son is a trifle. Let Helm and Freca deal with it later. Meanwhile the king and his council have matters of moment to consider.&#8221;<\/p>\n<cite><em>The Lord of the Rings. Appendix A: The House of Eorl.<\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cbusiness\u201d of the title may well be the attempt to arrange a match between Wulf and Hera. It seems an excellent fit. Ultraman, of course, was overseen by The War of the Rohirrim director Kenji Kamiyama (alongside Shinji Aramaki), and produced by <a href=\"http:\/\/sola-ent.com\/works\/ultraman-final-season\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Sola Entertainment<\/a> \u2014 Joseph Chou\u2019s company that happens to be handling production and animation for The War of the Rohirrim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As near as we can tell scoring seems to have been finalised on or around February 26.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"919\" height=\"602\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/stephen-gallagher-insta-scoring-final.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-118673 no-lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/stephen-gallagher-insta-scoring-final.jpg 919w, https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/stephen-gallagher-insta-scoring-final-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/stephen-gallagher-insta-scoring-final-768x503.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/stephen-gallagher-insta-scoring-final-244x160.jpg 244w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 919px) 100vw, 919px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A few days later, on March 2, Gallagher posted another snippet of score labelled \u201cHelm Hammerhand Still Stands\u201d with a simple message: \u201cWhat a week!\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"928\" height=\"451\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/stephen_gallagher_insta_helm_hammerhand_stands_mar_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-118681 no-lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/stephen_gallagher_insta_helm_hammerhand_stands_mar_2.jpg 928w, https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/stephen_gallagher_insta_helm_hammerhand_stands_mar_2-300x146.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/stephen_gallagher_insta_helm_hammerhand_stands_mar_2-768x373.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/stephen_gallagher_insta_helm_hammerhand_stands_mar_2-255x124.jpg 255w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 928px) 100vw, 928px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Lasswen, on TORn\u2019s Discord server, offered some analysis, observing that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This time all the instruments were concealed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Although there is no tempo or clefs, the bottom stave changes to bass clef, suggesting the others are in all treble, and that there are fewer bass instruments present than in <em>Business<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Since the five visible staves are grouped together (by the bar lines extending down across them) what we can see there is probably woodwinds (unless there are no woodwinds and these are treble brass such as trumpets and french horns).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There might still be crumhorns, just maybe not the bass ones as in <em>Business<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Business<\/em> had seven woodwinds, with a lot of bass ones, so this is likely a very different piece.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is only one visible note at the start, though you can see that the instrument on the second staff is also playing; and it\u2019s a lower note than in the second bar (from the curve of the slur line), but difficult to guess precisely what it would be.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The dynamic markings indicate it being quiet, at least at the start, but with some swell of sound and then a fade-away.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Like with <em>Business<\/em>, Lasswen also dropped this piece into a music editor, this time using piano as a &#8216;neutral&#8217;
