Dain’s Last Stand<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There’s a hallowed hill near Erebor were the heirs of Durin were slain.
\nAnd there upon that honoured mound stood the mighty warrior D\u00e1in.
\nFor many a year, great peace ensued for Dwarf and Men of the Dale.
\nThe Orc Wars fought so long and fierce had seen the Dwarves prevail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oh Mighty D\u00e1in
\nKing Under Mountain
\nRuler of Durin’s Folk
\nDefender of the Dwarven Realms
\nWe feast.
\nWe drink.
\nWe smoke!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was at Azanulbizar , Nanduhirion, that D\u00e1in in fire was tested.
\nWhen as a stripling of the Iron Hills, the Great Pale Orc he bested.
\nThere it was he at last avenged the death of the honoured N\u00e1in.
\nThough foresight stopped him fighting on, for he’d glimpsed grim ‘Durin’s Bane’<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nKing Under Mountain
\nRuler of Durin’s Folk
\nDefender of the Dwarven Realms
\nWe feast.
\nWe drink.
\nWe smoke!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emissaries from the Dark Lords lands had come with words of tempting.
\nTo seek a ‘trifle’ in form of ring, the Great Kings aid pre-empting.
\nBut well knew D\u00e1in of the ancient deceit that had snared many a Dwarven Lord.
\nHe refused the hand of the Morgul realm and they left in great discord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oh Mighty D\u00e1in
\nKing Under Mountain
\nRuler of Durin’s Folk
\nDefender of the Dwarven Realms
\nWe feast.
\nWe drink.
\nWe smoke!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Northward fiersome Easterling’s marched to punish the warrior King.
\nTo lay to waste all Erebor in refusing to aid the ring.
\nErebor North down to Gondor South, the armies of Mordor assailed.
\nThough fiercely outnumbered with backs to the wall, D\u00e0in’s Kingdom again prevailed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oh Mighty D\u00e1in
\nKing Under Mountain
\nRuler of Durin’s Folk
\nDefender of the Dwarven Realms
\nWe feast.
\nWe drink.
\nWe smoke!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brave men of Dale had answered D\u00e0ins call to face the Dark Lords threat.
\nSons and fathers who would fight til they’d fall for past wrongs they would never forget.
\nAnd so it was for Good King Brand who led the Men of Dale.
\nStanding side by side with the mighty D\u00e0in he fought there in the Vale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oh Mighty D\u00e1in
\nKing Under Mountain
\nRuler of Durin’s Folk
\nDefender of the Dwarven Realms
\nWe feast.
\nWe drink.
\nWe smoke!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But one by one the defenders fell , step by step retreated.
\nTil a fateful blow laid King Brand low and the allies seemed defeated.
\nBut the Mighty D\u00e0in would not submit, Brands body fierce defending.
\nHis fiery axe drank dark revenge from a stream that seemed never ending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oh Mighty D\u00e1in
\nKing Under Mountain
\nRuler of Durin’s Folk
\nDefender of the Dwarven Realms
\nWe feast.
\nWe drink.
\nWe smoke!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally fell the Mighty King, though his life he sold so dear.
\nWhilst safe secured behind strong Erebor walls his people conquered fear.
\nLong assailed the Easterling hordes, long the free folk defended.
\nTil there came a dawn when the ravens cried “The War of the Ring has ended! “<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All this time I believed
\naction was my only worth,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

glossy as a thoroughbred
\nready to race for the prize\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

when really such belief only
\nlives in other people\u2019s whispers<\/p>\n\n\n\n

saying only one kind can win,
\nonly one kind can be right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone saw through masks
\nI thought were my real faces,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

saw down through lie-scars
\nto the heart still beating<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and I saw the rubbed-red-raw
\npart of me I tried to cut away<\/p>\n\n\n\n

when really I am no
\nthoroughbred<\/p>\n\n\n\n

instead I am a woman
\nwho lives by coaxing heartbeats,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

who wants to open other
\nstables of illness, injury,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

which is why I never left
\nmy uncle\u2019s creasing face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My own sick heartbeats
\nfalter at changing pattern,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

but if this is real
\nI will fight through<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and I will prove to them
\nwho I really am<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and want to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like full and flowing beards in Belegost,
As long as mangy tail of Carcharoth,
Or massive Glaurung, terror of the air,
As wide as trunk of H\u00edrilorn the fair,
Like fearsome, sharp, bright blade of Glend, Nan\u2019s Sword,
And Aul\u00eb\u2019s ponderous chain, Angainor,
As high as stands the head of Gilim,
Or far as flows the hair of Uinen,
So long may my dark tresses grow to be,
To match the height of towering tree,
That of them ladder sturdy I may braid,
Descend to bring my suffering Beren aid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
