Tolkien&#8217;s first and last book.\u00a0 <a id=\"set-post-thumbnail\" class=\"thickbox\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-admin\/media-upload.php?post_id=103980&amp;type=image&amp;TB_iframe=1\" aria-describedby=\"set-post-thumbnail-desc\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment-266x266 size-266x266 alignright no-lazyload\" src=\"http:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Silmarillion-1977.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"85\" height=\"130\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Professor Tolkien&#8217;s notes first dated to 1917 as he began developing the characters, stories and ideas for what was to become a Middle-earth mythology while recovering in a WWI military hospital from trench fever.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>With the success of <strong><em>The Hobbit <\/em><\/strong>(published 40 years before <strong><em>The Silmarillion<\/em><\/strong>), Tolkien&#8217;s Sil was rejected by the publishers who requested more stories about hobbits.\u00a0 This resulted in 3 installments of <strong><em>The Lord of the Rings<\/em><\/strong> 17 years later between 1954 and 1955.\u00a0 But he never gave up on his expansive work on this inspired world.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, J.R.R. Tolkien passed away in 1973 before completing <strong><em>The Silmarillion<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 But through the devotion and efforts of his son Christopher, Professor Tolkien&#8217;s work was finished and published on September 15, 1977.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>The Silmarillion is the history of the War of the Exiled Elves against the Enemy, which all takes place in the North-west of the world (Middle-earth). Several tales of victory and tragedy are caught up in it; but it ends<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>with catastrophe, and the passing of the Ancient World<\/em>&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u2015 <a href=\"http:\/\/tolkiengateway.net\/wiki\/J.R.R._Tolkien\">J.R.R.
