Hengest and Horsa<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Hengest and Horsa, the horse-brothers,
\nhailed from Heligoland, a home of Jutes.
\nThe waves whispered, the whale-path called
\nthe brothers and their band to boat; the people
\nsailed the seas by the sun guided,
\nnot only Jutes, but Angles journeying with Saxons,
\nunited underneath one banner.
\nThe thegns by the tides at Thanet landed.<\/p>\n

The barbarian Britons battled the thegns.
\nThey were loth to lose their land, their home.
\nThe fighting was fierce, the fury of battle.
\nHorsa, the hero of Heligoland, fell.
\nHis lords lamented him, his life was spent.
\nMany thegns also to the Hall of Thunor hastened.
\nThe carrion crows consumed the dead.
\nDark was the death-day of Horsa.
\nHengest\u2019s hordes did harry their foes
\nto the shores of the sea, their shields and swords
\nshattered, shivered, and shorn of renown.
\nThe battle was lost by the Briton lords,
\ntheir Kingdom conquered, Cent Hengest
\ncalled that coastal, cliffy headland.
\nA Great and gilded, gabled Hall
\nwas raised, the residence of the royal family,
\nCent\u2019s honourable King, Hengest,
\nfirst and proudest, father of Princes.<\/p>\n

The gables were given their glorious names,
\nHengest and Horsa, on the Hall builded;
\nhorses of the highest hight in the land,
\non the thatch\u00e8d roof, the thegns\u2019 namesake.<\/p>\n

Deftly, gently, tentatively falling
\nReaching, covering
\nJourney time stalling.
\nDown the Downs

\nBarrowight calling.<\/p>\n

Mist enshrouding, path obscuring
\nWhispering, promising
\nSo alluring
\nDown the Downs
\nDown the Downs
\nBarrowight calling.<\/p>\n

‘Welcome Master’s Gamgee,
\nBrandybuck and Took
\nEspecially Master Baggin’s
\nCaught now on my hook!’
\nDown the Downs
\nDown the Downs
\nBarrowight calling.<\/p>\n

Dreamlike, corpselike, laid to rest
\nWaiting, dreading
\nDark Lords guest
\nDown the Downs
\nDown the Downs
\nBarrowight calling.<\/p>\n

No light, no hope, no voice to sing
\nDanger is coming
\nPut on the ring!
\nDown the Downs
\nDown the Downs
\nBarrowight calling!<\/p>\n

‘Give in, don’t fight, put down the blade
\nSave yourself Baggins
\nYour destiny’s made!’
\nDown the Downs

\nBarrowight …stalling?<\/p>\n

Screaming, fleeing, facing true light
\nRetreating forever
\nThe Barrowight”s flight
\nDown the Downs
\nDown the Downs
\nBombadil calling!<\/p>\n
