\"2014-12-04_11-41-45_255\"<\/a>Today we received official word from Tolkien publishers (in the USA) Houghton Mifflin Harcourt<\/a>: ten years on from\u00a0the last Middle-earth related Tolkien publication, there will be a new book for fans of the Professor to enjoy!<\/p>\n

Here’s what HMH\u00a0say in their official press release:<\/p>\n

‘RETURN TO MIDDLE-EARTH FOR HOUGHTON MIFFLIN HARCOURT<\/strong><\/p>\n

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt has acquired the U.S. rights to publish BEREN AND L\u00daTHIEN by J.R.R. Tolkien, edited by Christopher Tolkien and illustrated by Alan Lee, in May 2017.<\/p>\n

Christopher Tolkien explains:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2018The tale of Beren and L\u00fathien was, or became, an essential element in the evolution of The Silmarillion<\/em>, the myths and legends of the First Age of the World conceived by J.R.R. Tolkien. Returning from France and the battle of the Somme at the end of 1916, he wrote the tale in the following year.<\/p>\n

\u2018Essential to the story, and never changed, is the fate that shadowed the love of Beren and L\u00fathien: for Beren was a mortal man, but L\u00fathien was an immortal Elf. Her father, a great Elvish lord, in deep opposition to Beren, imposed on him an impossible task that he must perform before he might wed L\u00fathien. This is the kernel of the legend; and it leads to the supremely heroic attempt of Beren and L\u00fathien together to rob the greatest of all evil beings, Melkor, called Morgoth, the Black Enemy, of a Silmaril.<\/p>\n

\u2018In this book Christopher Tolkien has attempted to extract the story of Beren and L\u00fathien from the comprehensive work in which it was embedded; but that story was itself changing as it developed new associations within the larger history. To show something of the process whereby this legend of Middle-earth evolved over the years, he has told the story in his father’s own words by giving, first, its original form, and then passages in prose and verse from later texts that illustrate the narrative as it changed. Presented together for the first time, they reveal aspects of the story, both in event and in narrative immediacy, that were afterwards lost.\u2019<\/p>\n

Published on the tenth anniversary of the last Middle-earth book, the New York Times <\/em>bestseller The Children of H\u00farin<\/em>, this new volume will similarly include drawings and color plates by Alan Lee, who also illustrated The Lord of the Rings<\/em> and The Hobbit<\/em> and went on to win Academy Awards for his work on The Lord of the Rings<\/em> film trilogy.’<\/p>\n

The edition will be published in Europe by Harper Collins<\/a>. Our friends at the Tolkien Society <\/a>note that ‘Beren and L\u00fathien\u00a0<\/em>will be published 100 years since Tolkien\u2019s wife Edith danced for him in a\u00a0small woodland glade filled with hemlocks in East Yorkshire<\/a>, an event he later acknowledged was the inspiration for the meeting of\u00a0the immortal L\u00fathien Tin\u00faviel and\u00a0the mortal Beren in the glades beside Esgalduin.’<\/p>\n
