He is sometimes known, especially in his native Scotland, by the nickname\u00a0The Big Yin<\/em>\u00a0(The Big One).[3]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0His first trade, in the early 1960s, was as a\u00a0welder<\/a>\u00a0(specifically a\u00a0boilermaker<\/a>) in the\u00a0Glasgow<\/a>\u00a0shipyards<\/a>, but he gave it up towards the end of the decade to pursue a career as a\u00a0folk singer<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0Humblebums<\/a>\u00a0and subsequently as a\u00a0soloist<\/a>. In the early 1970s he made the transition from folk-singer with a comedic persona to full-fledged comedian, a role in which he continues.
